Bentley, South Yorkshire

Bentley with Arksey is a former civil parish (1866–1974) and urban district (1911–1974) adjacent to the town of Doncaster in the West Riding of Yorkshire.

Bentley railway station is a railway station that serves Bentley, South Yorkshire, England. It lies on the Wakefield Line and is managed by Northern, who also provide all the passenger trains serving it. It was opened on 27 April 1992 by British Rail with financial assistance from the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive. An earlier wooden halt, Bentley Crossing, built by the West Riding and Grimsby Railway, had previously existed at the same location but was closed by 1943.A common complaint is the lack of a footbridge between the two platforms. Passengers have to cross through the road barrier to get from one side to the other; therefore they may have to wait until trains have passed, and could miss their trains. The Wakefield Line is busy with London North Eastern Railway services and freight services as well as the Northern operations. Bentley is a popular commuting station for Leeds and Wakefield. It has a large car park for the size of the station and as such is a good station for Park and Ride to Doncaster. However possibly due to the footbridge issue, Adwick station is the dedicated park and ride station for Doncaster.

Bentley Crossing Halt was a small railway station on the West Riding and Grimsby Railway line between Doncaster and Carcroft & Adwick-le-Street. It was a workman's halt built in 1914 to serve the community of Bentley, near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England at the point where the main line crosses the road through the village on the level. The road links Bentley with York Bar. The station consisted of wooden platforms with wooden buildings to act as waiting shelter and office. The station was closed around 1943 and little can now be seen of the buildings (a regular fault with wooden built stations), however the Bentley (South Yorkshire) railway station was built on the same site.

Arksey railway station, originally named Stockbridge and later Arksey and Stockbridge was a station which served the villages of Arksey and Stockbridge in the English county of South Yorkshire. It was served by trains on the main line between Doncaster and York.

Bentley Colliery was a coal mine in Bentley, near Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England, that operated between 1906 and 1993. In common with many other mines, it suffered disasters and accidents. The worst Bentley disaster was in 1931 when 45 miners were killed after a gas explosion. The site of the mine has been converted into a woodland.

Toll Bar is a semi-rural hamlet in the City of Doncaster local government area, South Yorkshire, England. It is situated on the A19 road, and approximately 3 miles (5 km) north from the town of Doncaster, and adjacent to Bentley. Toll Bar had a population of 1,226 in the 2011 census.On 25 June 2007 the Ea Beck overflowed and flooded the village.The village school is Toll Bar Primary School. In 2014, about one third of its pupils had a Romany or Gypsy background. The school has been rated as good by Ofsted. Toll Bar also has a post office.

Arksey is a village in the City of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England. It had an estimated population of 1,303 as of 2010. It was the birthplace of the children's writer Barbara Euphan Todd on 9 January 1890. Arksey has four satellite hamlets: Shaftholme, Tilts, Almholme and Stockbridge. The sey in Arksey means island in Old English, which is appropriate as the village is surrounded by marshland. Arksey is older than the Domesday Book.The Parish Church of All Saints is a Grade I listed building, dating back to the 1120s.

Shaftholme is a small hamlet in South Yorkshire, England, in the parish of Arksey that is located half a mile north of Bentley and two miles north of Doncaster.

Doncaster (York Road) railway station was built as a terminus for services on the Hull and Barnsley and Great Central Joint Railway in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. It was reached by a triangular junction from the main line just outside town. The station was set at the north end of town, just beyond the Doncaster Avoiding Line, in the fork of the old A1 and the A19 (York Road). The line and its stations were ready for opening on 1 May 1916 but its five-passenger stations, at Snaith & Pollington, Sykehouse, Thorpe-in-Balne, Doncaster (York Road) and Warmsworth never saw a passenger train. The route duplicated that of other railways in the area and the stations were some way from the villages they purported to serve. The station was kept fully intact until the late 1960s when demolition finally came. The only passenger trains to work over the line were enthusiasts specials, the last of these was the "Doncaster Decoy", which ran on 5 October 1968.

The River Cheswold is a short river in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. The river originally formed a southern cut of the River Don, and passed underneath what is Friargate. The flow direction of the river has been changed, and it has been heavily modified, largely being culverted as it passes underneath the railway and bus stations. The river is sometimes labelled the shortest named river in Britain.
