K-Town Historic District

Kostner, formerly known as Kildare, is an 'L' station on the CTA's Pink Line. It is located in the K-Town neighborhood of the North Lawndale community area, often just referred to as Lawndale. Kostner station was originally opened as Kildare. During reconstruction in 2003, its primary entrance was moved one block west to Kostner Avenue and the Kildare entrance became an auxiliary entrance. This is the first outbound Pink Line station to be located at-grade; immediately to the east of the station, the tracks begin ramping up to an elevated structure and remain elevated for the remainder of the distance to the Loop.

Pulaski is an 'L' station on the CTA's Pink Line, located in the North Lawndale neighborhood. Pulaski opened on June 16, 1902, as part of the Douglas Park branch of the Metropolitan West Side Elevated Railroad. It served as the terminus of that line until its 1907 extension to 48th Avenue.

The Five Houses on Avers District is a historic district in Chicago, Illinois, United States. The district was built between 1892 and 1894 by Frederick B. Townsend. It was designated a Chicago Landmark on March 2, 1994.

The Storkline Furniture Corporation Factory is a historic factory building at 4400-4418 W. 26th Street in the South Lawndale neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The Storkline Furniture Corporation, a nationally popular children's furniture company, produced all of its furniture at the factory. Founded in 1915 as the Glass Novelty Company, the corporation renamed itself after its most popular product in the 1920s and built a new factory in 1925. Chicago architect Sidney Minchin designed the brick building, incorporating Sullivanesque terra cotta decorations in the facade. As one of the only companies specializing in children's furniture, Storkline dominated the market in the 1920s and 1930s, and it saw continued success in the following decades. It produced furniture at the factory until another furniture company bought the corporation in the 1960s.The factory was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 6, 2013.

The 7th congressional district of Illinois covers parts of Cook County, as of the 2011 redistricting that followed the 2010 census. All or parts of Bellwood, Chicago, Forest Park, Oak Park, Maywood, and Westchester are included. Democrat Danny K. Davis has represented the district since January 1997. With a Cook Partisan Voting Index rating of D+37, it is the most Democratic district in Illinois.Due to reapportionment every ten years, the 7th district like other districts has relocated in Illinois throughout its history. In the mid-1800s, Abraham Lincoln represented the 7th district before being elected president, although his home now lies within Illinois's 13th congressional district and most of his district's former territory is now located in the 18th district.

The Hawthorne Works was a large factory complex of the Western Electric Company in Cicero, Illinois. Named after the original name of the town, Hawthorne, it opened in 1905 and operated until 1983. At its peak of operations, Hawthorne employed 45,000 workers, producing large quantities of telephone equipment, but also a wide variety of consumer products. The facility is well-known for the industrial studies held there in the 1920s and the Hawthorne effect is named for the works.

The Shedd Park Fieldhouse is the historic fieldhouse in Shedd Park, a public park in the South Lawndale community area of Chicago, Illinois. John G. Shedd, for whom the park and fieldhouse are named, gave the city the land for the park. The Prairie School building was designed by William Drummond and built in 1917. The brown brick building features limestone trim. A Prairie School gymnasium designed by Michaelsen and Rognstad was added to the building in 1928.The fieldhouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 30, 1974, and was designated as a Chicago Landmark on February 11, 2004.

The 1968 Chicago riots, in the United States, were sparked in part by the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Rioting and looting followed, with people flooding out onto the streets of major cities. Soon riots began, primarily in black urban areas. Over 100 major U.S. cities experienced disturbances, resulting in roughly $50 million in damage. Rioters and police in Chicago - ironically a place of which King himself said “I’ve been in many demonstrations all across the South, but I can say that I have never seen, even in Mississippi and Alabama, mobs as hostile and as hate-filled as I’m seeing in Chicago” - were particularly aggressive, and the damage was severe. Of the 39 people who died in the nationwide disturbances, 34 were black. Chicago, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. experienced some of the worst riots following King's assassination. In Chicago itself, more than 48 hours of rioting left 11 Chicago citizens dead, 48 wounded by police gunfire, 90 policemen injured, and 2,150 people arrested. Three miles of East Garfield Park and West Garfield Park on West Madison Street were left in a state of rubble. Later the same year, around the Democratic National Convention, Chicago would once again be a place for political protest and clashes with the authorities.

The Anton Cermak House, located at 2348 S. Millard Avenue in Chicago's South Lawndale neighborhood, was the home of former Chicago mayor Anton Cermak. Frank A. Randak designed the American Foursquare house, which was built in 1902. Cermak moved to the house in 1923 and accomplished much of his political legacy while living there. He had become president of the Cook County Board of Commissioners a year prior, and he became chairman of the Cook County Democratic Party in 1928; he used this position to establish the foundations of Chicago's Democratic political machine. A native of Bohemia, Cermak became Chicago's first foreign-born mayor in 1931. After Cermak was assassinated in 1933, his daughter Helen became the house's owner.The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 4, 2011.

St. Gregory Episcopal School was established in 1962 by the Rev. R. L. Whitehouse and Gordon L. Baker. Its founders envisioned a liturgical and educational institution patterned after the all-male English Cathedral choir schools, but situated within the urban context of Chicago. Founded as an outreach ministry of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, the school shared space within the church and its parish hall until August 2002. Enrollment was necessarily small (under 30) given the limited amount of space. In August 2002 St. Gregory's moved to the former Blessed Sacrament School building in Chicago's North Lawndale community. With the additional space at its new location, it realized a long term desire to add a kindergarten class. There was also room for a computer lab, a library, a lunchroom and a small parking lot that doubles as a playground. On June 30, 2010 it merged with Holy Family School and Ministries in the North Lawndale Homan Square neighborhood.

Central Park is a station on the Chicago Transit Authority's 'L' system, serving the Pink Line and the North Lawndale neighborhood. The station opened on December 9, 1951, as a replacement for the closed Drake, Lawndale, and Homan stations.

Cicero is a station on the Chicago Transit Authority's 'L' system, serving the Pink Line. The station was the site of an accident in 1979 in which a train derailed and hit the station, stopping just short of the ticket agent's booth. The station is located in Cicero, Illinois.
