South Mountain (Ulster County, New York)

West Shokan is a hamlet in the town of Olive in Ulster County, New York, United States. The community is located near New York State Route 28A and is 15.2 miles (24.5 km) west of Kingston. West Shokan has a post office with the ZIP code 12494.

Ashokan High Point is a 3,081 feet (939 m) summit in the Catskill Mountains of New York. High Point is the loftiest part of a massif that includes the adjacent Mombaccus Mountain, Little Rocky and South Mountain. The summit can be accessed via the Kanape Brook Trail, which ascends from Ulster County Road 42 to the saddle between High Point and Mombaccus. This trail, named for 19th-century farmer John Canape, was formerly a wagon track connected to the present-day Freeman Avery Road on the south side of the mountain, providing a route between Watson Hollow and Samsonville in the days of the Catskills tanneries. The Gazetteer and Business Directory of Ulster County, N. Y. For 1871-2 referred to the peak as "Shokan Point". It was also known as "Samson," after the Catskill tannery owner for whom Samsonville was named, and is so identified on a 1942 United States Coast and Geodetic Survey benchmark at the summit. Nowadays, Samson Mountain is the name given to a nearby peak above the upper reaches of Rondout Creek. A lesser summit below the main peak affords an expansive view of the area. It has been called "Little Ashokan," "Round Mountain," "Ashokan Cobble" or "Samson's Nose").

High Point (frequently called Ashokan High Point) is a mountain located in the Catskill Mountains of New York west of Olivebridge. Mombaccus Mountain is located southwest, and South Mountain is located north of High Point.

Hanover Mountain is a mountain located in the Catskill Mountains of New York west of West Shokan. Little Rocky is located south, and Balsam Cap is located northwest of Hanover Mountain.

Olive is a town in Ulster County, New York, United States. The town is west of Kingston, New York and is inside the Catskill Park. The population was 4,226 at the 2020 census.

Mombaccus Mountain is located in the Catskill Mountains of New York. To the south, it looms over the hamlet of Samsonville in the town of Olive. Together with Little Rocky and South Mountain, Mombaccus Mountain is part of a massif dominated by Ashokan High Point. Below its north slope is the Kanape Brook trail, an old wagon road that leads to a saddle between Mombaccus and Ashokan High Point. Big Rosy Bone Knob, a lesser summit, lies southwest of Mombaccus Mountain. According to historian DeWitt Davis, Mombaccus was "noted for huckleberries and bears" and bear traps were dug on its slopes.The placename Mombaccus ("mask of Bacchus" in Greek), was given by Dutch settlers to the area now known as the town of Rochester. It was inspired by a carving of a face (likely the Algonkan bear god Maysingwey) found on a sycamore tree where Rochester Creek (formerly known as Mombaccus Creek) enters Rondout Creek Today, Mombaccus is used as the name of a hamlet within Rochester on County Route 3 and for a tributary of Rochester Creek. The name Mombaccus was not given to the mountain until much later. When the town of Olive was formed, the area south of Mombaccus was known as "Subbeatty Land" and old deeds for properties on its slopes still refer to it as "Subbeatty Mountain."

The railway station of the hamlet of Brodhead's Bridge in Olive, New York was at milepost 18.1 on the Ulster and Delaware Railroad. It was a destination for tourists and vacationers from New York City who would stay at local resort homes (boarding houses) and use the nearby Esopus Creek to swim and fish. Similar resort villages named Atwood and Olive Bridge were also served by this station, which was abandoned in 1913 before it was submerged by the waters of the newly built Ashokan Reservoir.

Samuels Point is a cliff located in the Catskill Mountains of New York west-northwest of Olivebridge. Mount Pleasant is located north, and South Mountain is located south-southeast of Samuels Point.

Little Rocky is a mountain located in the Catskill Mountains of New York. It is part of a massif that includes Ashokan High Point, Mombaccus Mountain and South Mountain in West Shokan. Hanover Mountain is located north, Breath Hill is located northwest, and Big Rosy Bone Knob is located southwest of Little Rocky.

The Emile Brunel Sculpture Garden and Studio, also known as the Totem Indian Trading Post, Le Chalet Indien, and Brunel Park, is located on Da Silva Road, just off the NY 28 state highway, in Boiceville, Town of Olive, New York, United States. It consists of seven sculptures and three buildings. Brunel was a French immigrant and artist who had become fascinated by the Native American tribes of the West during his travels there in the early 20th century. After a successful career as a photographer he bought a tract of land in the Catskills and built a studio residence and a resort on it, decorated with sculptures inspired by the Native American art he had seen. The resort closed and the statues were relocated soon thereafter when Route 28 was widened through it at the end of World War II, but the sculpture garden remained a popular roadside attraction afterwards. In 1929 Brunel began construction of a studio residence on the site in the "neo-rustic" or French Arts and Craft style. His wife and daughter (both named Gladyse) kept the sculpture garden maintained after his death in 1944, operating a nearby souvenir shop until 1985. The artist's home and studio remain intact, and were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

Cold Brook is a former railroad station in the Boiceville section of the town of Olive, Ulster County, New York, United States. Located on Cold Brook Road, just north of New York State Route 28A next to Esopus Creek, Cold Brook station served the New York Central Railroad's Catskill Mountain Branch, formerly the Ulster and Delaware Railroad. The station was located 22.1 miles (35.6 km) northwest of Kingston Point station in the city of Kingston. The station replaced a flag stop at Cold Brook Bridge and became the primary station for Boiceville on June 8, 1913, when the railroad abandoned the alignment and station through Boiceville for construction of the Ashokan Reservoir. The Ulster and Delaware commenced construction on a new station depot in June 1915. Construction was completed c. September 1915.The New York Central Railroad ended passenger service on the Catskill Mountain Branch on March 31, 1954, and despite being given permission to demolish the station in April 1955, the station continues to stand. The station is also an access point for the Ashokan Rail Trail, a rail trail runs from Cold Brook to West Hurley.

Boiceville Railroad Station was built by the Ulster and Delaware Railroad to serve the community of Boiceville, New York. Located at MP 21.3, Boiceville was the westernmost depot to be removed as a result of the construction of the Ashokan Reservoir. Although the community of Boiceville was submerged, the station site remains above the reservoir level, at a point just west of where the old railroad right of way slips under the waters of the reservoir, and just east of where it diverges from the new line.In total, 12 miles of railroad were relocated away from the Ashokan Reservoir in 1913. The station stop was replaced by the new Cold Brook station.
