Kenley (ward)

Kenley railway station serves Kenley in the London Borough of Croydon in south London. The station and all trains serving it are operated by Southern, and it is in Travelcard Zone 6, on the Caterham Line 16 miles 29 chains (26.3 km) from London Charing Cross. The station is served by trains from Caterham to Purley, East Croydon, London Bridge and London Victoria. It is the last station on this line located within the Greater London area, however Oyster fares are available up to and including the end of the line at Caterham. On the London-bound platform (Platform 1) is a manned ticket office (staffed during some peak hours) and a self-service passenger-operated Ticket Machine. A second self-service Ticket Machine is available just outside the Caterham-bound platform (Platform 2) which is suitably located to purchase tickets for the car park which is also located on this side. The nearest station with more substantial staffed hours is Purley.

Croydon South is a constituency created in 1974 and represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2015 by Chris Philp, a Conservative.

Riddlesdown railway station is on the Oxted line serving Riddlesdown in the London Borough of Croydon, south London. It is in Travelcard Zone 6, 13 miles 38 chains (13.48 miles, 21.69 km) from London Bridge, although off peak trains run to and from London Victoria. The station is managed by Southern.

Kenley is an area within the London Borough of Croydon and the historic county of Surrey. It is situated south of Purley, east of Coulsdon, north of Caterham and Whyteleafe and west of Sanderstead, and 13 miles (21 km) south of Charing Cross. At the 2011 Census, Kenley had a population of 14,966. Kenley was part of the administrative county of Surrey prior to the creation of Greater London in 1965. Significant portions of the area lie within the Metropolitan Green Belt. In particular, the south of the area is dominated by the open green spaces of Kenley Common and Kenley Aerodrome.

Riddlesdown is a place in the London Borough of Croydon, one mile east from the centre of Purley. The name applies to the residential district and to the green space maintained by the City of London Corporation which is also known as Riddlesdown Common.

Riddlesdown Common or Riddlesdown is a 43 hectare area of green space in Kenley, towards the northern end of the North Downs in the London Borough of Croydon. It is owned and maintained by the City of London Corporation, apart from two small areas, one of which is operated by the London Wildlife Trust and the other by Croydon Council. An area of 32 hectares is a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest. The name Riddlesdown also applies to the local district of residential housing. A trig point at the site indicates that it is 525 ft (160 m) above sea level.

Foxley Wood is an 11.36 hectare Local Nature Reserve and Site of Borough Importance for Nature Conservation, Grade 1, in Purley in the London Borough of Croydon. It is owned and managed by Croydon Council. The site was purchased by Coulsdon and Purley Urban District Council under the Green Belt Act in the 1930s.Some of the woodland on the site is ancient, and there are also areas of chalk grassland. The wood is principally oak and ash, with some sycamore and wild cherry. There is an understorey of hazel. Flora include dog's mercury, wood millet, wood melick. The site also has a wide variety of insects, including grasshoppers and butterflies. Forty-five species of birds have been recorded, and there are also badgers and roe deer.There is access from Burwood Avenue, Northwood Avenue, Woodland Way and Higher Drive.

Riddlesdown Collegiate (formerly Riddlesdown High School) is a secondary school with academy status located in the Riddlesdown area of the London Borough of Croydon, UK. It is a coeducational school, of between 1800 and 2000 students (400 of those being post–16 students). The school takes its pupils mainly from the Sanderstead, Selsdon, Purley, Kenley, New Addington and South Croydon areas, and specialises in science. Riddlesdown is the largest school in Croydon in terms of pupil numbers, and one of the most over-subscribed schools in the area.

The Purley station rail crash was a train collision that occurred just to the north of Purley railway station in the London Borough of Croydon on Saturday 4 March 1989, leaving five dead and 88 injured. The collision was caused by the driver of one of the trains passing a signal at danger; he pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 12 months in prison plus six months suspended, although this was reduced to four months upon appeal, and in 2007 overturned. The Department of Transport report noted that the signal had a high incidence of being passed at danger and recommended that an automatic train protection system should be introduced without delay and in the interim a repeater for the signal that had been passed be installed.

Purley railway station is in the London Borough of Croydon on the Brighton Main Line, 13 miles 29 chains (21.50 km) measured from London Bridge (15 miles 13 chains (24.40 km) from Charing Cross), in Travelcard Zone 6. It is a junction, with branches to Caterham and Tattenham Corner.

Purley is an area of the London Borough of Croydon in London, England, 11.7 miles (18.8 km) south of Charing Cross, with a history going back at least 800 years. It was originally granted as an estate from holdings at Sanderstead and until as a district of Surrey and then, with neighbouring Coulsdon, as an urban district that became an electoral ward of the London Borough of Croydon, becoming part of the ceremonial county of London, in 1965. In 2018 the Purley ward was divided into two: Purley and Woodcote, and Purley Oaks and Riddlesdown. Purley is a suburban area of South London, and the quintessential suburban environment has been referenced in fictional and popular culture, most notably as the setting for the long running Terry and June sitcom. Purley had a population of about 14,000 in 2011.

The 1928 Imperial Airways Vickers Vulcan crash occurred on 13 July 1928 when a Vickers Vulcan on a test flight from Croydon Airport with a pilot and five passengers crashed near Purley, Surrey three miles from the airport, with the loss of four passengers. As a result of the crash Imperial Airways stopped the flying of staff (so called joy rides) on test flights.
