Painscastle Castle

Painscastle (Welsh: Castell-paen) is a village and community in Powys (formerly Radnorshire), Wales which takes its name from the castle at its heart. It lies between Builth and Hay-on-Wye, approximately 3 miles from the Wales-England border today. The community also includes the villages and settlements of Rhosgoch, Bryngwyn, Llandeilo Graban and Llanbedr. The population as of the 2011 UK Census was 524. It is represented by the Painscastle and Rhosgoch Community Council, which comprises eight community councillors. It is included in the Glasbury electoral ward for Powys County Council elections. The southern boundary of the community runs through the Begwns, the larger part of which range of hills are within the community. The village itself sits in the broad valley of the Bachawy a small left-bank tributary of the River Wye which runs westwards to the south of it. To the north the community extends to include Red Hill, Llanbedr Hill and Bryngwyn Hill.

Painscastle was, from 1894 to 1974, a rural district in the administrative county of Radnorshire, Wales. The district was formed by the Local Government Act 1894, when the existing Hay Rural Sanitary District was divided into three: the section in Breconshire was reconstituted as Hay Rural District, the area in Herefordshire became Bredwardine Rural District, while the parishes in Radnorshire became Painscastle Rural District. The new district took its name from the ancient hundred of Painscastle. The council continued to be based in Hay on Wye in Breconshire. The rural district comprised nine civil parishes: Boughrood Bryngwyn Cleiro Glasbury Llanddewi Fach Llandeilo Graban Llanstephan Llowes PainscastleThe district was abolished in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972, which completely reorganised local administration in England and Wales. Its area became part of the District of Radnor in the new county of Powys.

Maesyronnen Chapel is about 1 mile (2 km) north of the village of Glasbury, Powys, Wales (grid reference SO176410). It is designated by Cadw as a Grade I listed building. The chapel is one of the earliest Nonconformist chapels to be built in Wales, and is the only chapel existing from that time to be largely unchanged and still in use as a chapel. It is currently administered by the United Reformed Church. The attached ccaretaker's cottage is also listed at Grade I.

Rhos Goch National Nature Reserve, located near Painscastle on the England/Wales border, is one of the largest raised bogs in mid and south Wales. ‘Goch’ is Welsh for ‘red’, and in autumn the bog accordingly becomes a stunning carpet of red and gold. Many birds and insects love the reserve's diverse and little-disturbed habitats. Curlew and lapwing feed here in the winter, and in summer the swamp is alive with the calls of the willow warbler and reed bunting, the air shimmering with dragonflies and damselflies.

Llowes is a small village in the community of Glasbury, Powys, Wales. The village has approximately 110 inhabitants (2005). The nearest town is Hay-on-Wye, some 3 miles (5 km) to the south-east.

Glasbury (Welsh: Y Clas-ar-Wy), also known as Glasbury-on-Wye, is a village and community in Powys, Wales. The village lies at an important crossing point on the River Wye, connecting the historic counties of Brecknockshire and Radnorshire, and is located just outside the Brecon Beacons National Park, north of the Black Mountains. The village is split between the communities of Glasbury and Gwernyfed. The nearest town is Hay-on-Wye, some 4 miles (6 km) to the north east. The nearest city is Hereford in England, some 25 miles (40 km) to the east. Glasbury is a popular location for river fishing, canoeing and kayaking. The population of Glasbury community in Radnorshire was 994 (census 2011), in 1841 it was 838.

Three Cocks or Aberllynfi (Welsh: [ˌabɛrˈɬənvi]) is a village near Glasbury in Powys, Wales. The Welsh name refers to the mouth of the Afon Llynfi which enters the River Wye a mile from the village. The nearest town is Hay-on-Wye some 5 miles (8.5 km) to the northeast.

Glasbury-on-Wye railway station was a station at Glasbury, Powys, Wales. The station closed in 1962.During the station's life it was in Breconshire, whereas the village it served was across the Wye in Radnorshire. Both counties were taken into Powys after the station closed.

The Church of St Peter (and St Cynidr) is located outside the Welsh village of Glasbury and dates back to the sixth century. Near the confluence of the rivers Wye and Llynfi, the church has experienced serious flooding which has required it to be rebuilt twice, in 1665 and 1838. The current church is designated a Grade II listed building and is open to the public for worship.

Pipton is a small settlement and former civil parish (or community) in Powys, Wales on the Afon Llynfi near its confluence with the River Wye. It was formerly in the county of Brecknockshire and is now part of the community of Bronllys. The nearest town is Hay-on-Wye some 5 miles (8.0 km) to the east.

Boughrood Brest (Welsh Brest Bochrwyd) is a settlement in Glasbury-on-Wye, Powys, Wales, which is 39 miles (62 km) from Cardiff and 138 miles (222 km) from London. It lies close to the banks of the River Wye, between Boughrood itself and Glasbury.

Clyro (Welsh: Cleirwy) is a village and community in Radnorshire, Powys, Wales, with 781 inhabitants as of the 2011 UK Census. The nearest town is Hay-on-Wye, some 1.5 miles (2.4 km) to the south-east.
