Newlands Valley

Rigg Beck is a minor river of Cumbria in England. Rigg Beck is also the name of a famous dwelling – the Purple House – placed where the Beck crosses the Keskadale road, and which formed an excellent starting point for exploring the fells.

Little Town is a hamlet in the civil parish of Above Derwent, in the Allerdale district of Cumbria, England. It is in the Workington constituency of the United Kingdom Parliament. Prior to Brexit in 2020 it was part of the North West England constituency of the European Parliament.Little Town is in the Lake District National Park. It is in the Newlands Valley, separated from Derwent Water to the east by the summit of Catbells. The hamlet is about 5.5 miles (9 km) by road from Keswick.

Stair is a village in Cumbria, England. It is situated in the Newlands Valley, to the west of Derwent Water and within the Lake District National Park. It is some 4 miles (6.4 km) by road from Keswick.For administrative purposes, Stair lies within the civil parish of Above Derwent, the district of Allerdale, and the county of Cumbria. It is within the Workington constituency of the United Kingdom Parliament. Prior to Brexit in 2020, it was in the North West England constituency of the European Parliament.

Keskadale Beck is a minor river of Cumbria, England. The beck rises at the confluence of High Hole Beck (which rises beneath Robinson Crags) and Moss Beck (from Buttermere Moss). From there, Keskadale Beck flows north east, picking up Dudmanscomb Gill (running north from Robinson). Ill Gill joins near Keskadale Farm. The beck joins Newlands Beck opposite Little Town.

Newlands Church is a 16th-century church situated less than 500 metres west of the hamlet of Little Town, Cumbria, England in the Newlands Valley of the Lake District. Its exact date of origin is unknown, but a map of 1576 shows a "Newlande Chap." on the site. The church exterior presents white-washed roughcast walls and a green slate roof; the interior displays two stained glass windows, a gallery, and a reading desk and a pulpit dated 1610. Tourists and hillwalkers visit on their way to the fells. The church is a Grade II listed building.

Scope Beck is a minor river in the county of Cumbria in England. The beck runs through Little Dale, a valley between the mountains of Hindscarth (to the east) and Robinson, in a north north easterly direction. The beck is fed by Deep Gill, which runs east from Burnt Crags, and two streams from Littledale Edge. Scope Beck itself surrenders its waters to Newlands Beck south of Chapel Bridge.

Cat Bells is a fell in the English Lake District in the county of Cumbria. It has a height of 451 metres (1,480 ft) and is one of the most popular fells in the area. It is situated on the western shore of Derwentwater within three miles (five kilometres) of the busy tourist town of Keswick. Its distinctive shape catches the attention of many visitors to the Lakes who feel compelled to climb to the summit after seeing it from the viewpoint of Friars' Crag on the opposite side of Derwentwater. The Lake District writer and walker Alfred Wainwright acknowledges the popularity of Cat Bells among fellwalkers of all abilities by saying:"It is one of the great favourites, a family fell where grandmothers and infants can climb the heights together, a place beloved. Its popularity is well deserved: its shapely topknott attracts the eye offering a steep but obviously simple scramble."

Above Derwent is a civil parish in Cumbria, England, to the west of Derwentwater and Keswick. It lies entirely within the Lake District National Park.At the 2011 Census the parish had a population of 1,198 in 514 households, a small decrease from the 2001 figure of 1,207 living in 516 households.The area of the civil parish is 5,505 hectares (13,600 acres; 21.25 sq mi).

Barrow is small fell in the English Lake District in the county of Cumbria which reaches a height of 455 metres (1,494 feet). It is in the Newlands Valley 2.5 miles (4 km) south-west of Keswick. Although comparatively small in height, Barrow commands an all-round view, with the vales of Keswick and Newlands being visible. The name of the fell originates from the Anglo Saxon language meaning a hill or long ridge.

Maiden Moor is a fell in the English Lake District, it stands 6 km (3+3⁄4 miles) south of the town of Keswick and is part of the high ground that separates the Newlands Valley and Borrowdale, it has a modest height of 576 m (1,890 ft) and so fails to be mentioned on many UK mountain lists but it does have a separate chapter in Alfred Wainwright’s Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells.

Swinside is a hill in the northwestern area of the English Lake District. It is small, wooded and surrounded by much bigger and more popular fells, meaning it is often overlooked. Alfred Wainwright, for instance, failed to include it in his pictorial guides to fells in the Lake District. Unlike many of its grander neighbours, Swinside is a Marilyn as a result of being surrounded by a moat of low boggy ground. Until recently it was also completely covered by trees, but a track now leads up to the summit where the trees have been felled. The land is privately owned and there is no public footpath to the summit although the owner recently allowed local residents from the nearby village of Portinscale to visit the summit on a sponsored walk.

Rowling End is a peak in the Lake District about 433 meters it is a steep slope leading up towards Causey Pike. It is briefly mentioned in books however they mainly focus on Causey Pike. The summit has a small cairn on it amongst the heather and other shrubs and plants.
