Lake Gonzales

Monthalia is a small unincorporated rural community. It is located along Gonzales County Road 143. The road joins US 90A and FM 466 as a bridge across the Guadalupe River. The road bypasses neighboring Belmont. The ghost town Oak Forest and the "MA Wade Dam" lie to the north. The community had only 65 people as of the 2000 census. It is primarily home to livestock ranchers and has no schools or businesses. Nolan Ryan Beef operates several ranches in the area raising cattle. Monthalia was first settled in 1846. It had a church and masonic lodge by 1868 and a post office was established in 1893. The community later built a school. The school closed in 1948 and the post office was closed in 1968; both were moved a short distance to neighboring Cost.

Oak Forest was a settlement in Gonzales County, Texas, United States, five miles west of Gonzales. Oak Forest was situated along modern U.S. Highway 90 Alternate and CR 143, adjacent to the Guadalupe River and due south of the modern Palmetto State Park. Formerly the location of a mill and later re-purposed as a power dam, it failed in 1935 during a flood and was later rebuilt. There is still an operating hydroelectric dam and a small reservoir called MA Wade Dam near the site. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had an estimated population 25 in 2000.

Wonder Cave is a show cave located in the Balcones Fault in San Marcos, Texas. Its entrance is one mile southwest of the county courthouse in San Marcos. The cave is reported to be the only commercially operated dry-formed cave in the United States ("dry-formed" because the fissure was opened not by erosion but by the earthquake that produced the Balcones Fault). The fault itself is visible in the cave's ceiling. Originally named Bevers Cave after Mark Bevers, who discovered it in 1893, the cave for a while concealed Bevers' illicit distilling and gambling enterprises.The cave is also home to Wonder World amusement park, which features tours of the multichambered cave and a wildlife park. .

Bebe is an unincorporated community in Gonzales County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community proper had an estimated population of 52 in 2000; however, its rural environs are rated at 1,240 residents. It formerly had a set of local schools and other services in the early 20th-century.

Palmetto State Park is a state park located in Gonzales County, Texas, United States northwest of Gonzales and southeast of Luling. The land was acquired by deeds from private owners and the City of Gonzales in 1934–1936 and was opened in 1936.

The Ottine wetlands or Ottine swamp is an ecosystem along the San Marcos River in and around Palmetto State Park in Gonzales County, Texas. Comprising approximately 202 hectares, the wetlands are geographically distinct from other Texas wetlands, and located at the boundary of several biogeographic regions, resulting in a relatively high diversity of plant and animal species.

Ottine is an unincorporated community in Gonzales County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had an estimated population of 90 in 2000. It is home to Palmetto State Park, which can accommodate approximately 500 daily campers. The mapped record of its area from 1856 indicates Ottine originally began as a former "Beaumont, Gonzales County, Texas" on the San Marcos River, northeast of what is now known-as Belmont, Texas on the Guadalupe River. Ottine is home to an urban legend surrounding a bigfoot-like humanoid "swamp thing". Ottine was also once home to an independent school district known as Ottine-Gonzales Independent School District founded around 1933 and in 1939 during the Second World War the Ottine-Luling Independent School District but the 2 districts didn’t work well now Ottine depends on both Luling and Gonzales’s Education

Lake Wood was a reservoir on the Guadalupe River 4 miles (6 km) west of the town of Gonzales in Gonzales County, Texas. The reservoir was formed in 1931 by the construction of a dam to provide hydroelectric power to the area. Management of the dam and lake was assumed by the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority on May 1, 1963. Lake Wood served as a venue for outdoor recreation, including fishing and boating. Lake Wood was also known locally as H-5 Reservoir or Guadalupe Reservoir H-5. On March 10, 2016, after substantial rainfall, one of the reservoir gates failed, essentially draining Lake Wood. The area where the lake was is now overgrown and forest like.

Leesville is an unincorporated city in the Gonzales-Guadalupe County area in Texas, United States. The community had a population of 384 residents as of 2018. The town was founded in 1874 and was named Leesburg for founder Newburn H. Guinn's daughter, Lee Guinn. The town was renamed Leesville by the U.S. Postal Service and was recognized by state law in 1891. Leesville is notable for its rich, well-documented history. It is also home to a $149 million water facility and 40-mile pipeline that stores and moves to 11.6 million gallons of water toward the Greater San Antonio area.

The county is named for its county seat, the city of Gonzales. The county was created in 1836 and organized the following year. The Texas Almanac rated all categories of land in the county at an aggregate value of $5.6-billion.

The San Marcos River rises from the San Marcos Springs, the location of the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment (formerly Aquarena Springs), in San Marcos, Texas. The springs are home to several threatened or endangered species, including the Texas blind salamander, fountain darter, and Texas wild rice. The river is a popular recreational area, and is frequented for tubing, canoeing, swimming, and fishing.
