Sturry Pit

Sturry is a village on the Great Stour river situated 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) northeast of Canterbury in Kent. Its large civil parish incorporates several hamlets and, until April 2019, the former mining village of Hersden.

Sturry railway station is a railway station Kent, England, serving Sturry and Fordwich on the Ashford to Ramsgate line in Kent. It is 2+1⁄4 miles (3.6 km) north east of Canterbury West, and lies either side of a level crossing. The station and all trains serving it are operated by Southeastern.

The Tithe Barn, Sturry, Kent, England is a barn dating from the early 16th century. The barn was built as the tithe barn for the grange of St Augustine's Abbey, Canterbury. At the Dissolution of the monasteries, the grange came into the ownership of Thomas Smythe who converted some of the buildings into a country house, Sturry Court. The barn continued in use for agricultural storage. In the early 20th century, Sturry Court was the country home of Alfred Milner who renamed it Milner Court. On his death in 1925, his widow, Violet, gifted the estate to The King's School, Canterbury which operated a preparatory school on the site. The school was opened by Rudyard Kipling, a friend of the Milners, in 1929. The site is now the Junior School for The King's School and the tithe barn has been restored and repurposed as a performing arts centre. "Sturry's most memorable building", the tithe barn is a Grade I listed structure.

St Nicholas' Church, Sturry, is a joint Anglican and Methodist church standing on a bank beside the River Stour, in the village of Sturry, near Canterbury, in East Kent. The Local Ecumenical Partnership enables the congregation to be of mixed denomination - either Methodist or Anglican. The large parish of St Nicholas incorporates the villages of Sturry with Fordwich and Westbere with Hersden. In 1965 the church was Grade I listed by English Heritage.

Fordwich Town Hall is a municipal structure in King Street, Fordwich, Kent, England. The structure, which serves as the meeting place of Fordwich Town Council, is a Grade II* listed building.

Fordwich is a market town and a civil parish in east Kent, England, on the River Stour, northeast of Canterbury. It is the smallest community by population in Britain with a town council. Its population increased by 30 between 2001 and 2011.

The Church of St Mary the Virgin is a redundant Anglican church in the small town of Fordwich, Kent, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building, and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. The church stands near to the centre of Fordwich, some 3 miles (5 km) northeast of Canterbury.

King's School Canterbury Boat Club is a rowing club based at Brett Sturry Quarry, Westbere Lakes, Sturry, Canterbury, Kent.

Broad Oak is a village in Sturry parish, Kent, England. It lies west of the A291 road to Herne Bay; the centre of the village is about half a mile northwest of the northern edge of Sturry village. Mead Manor is 14th century and mentioned in the Domesday Book. Broad Oak Chapel, built in 1867, is a Chapel of the Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion. There are two pubs in the village, The Royal Oak and The Golden Lion. However, The Royal Oak has been closed for some time and is currently subject to a planning application for redevelopment of the site.

Calcott is a hamlet in Sturry parish, in the Canterbury District of the English county of Kent. It lies on the A291 road, about 1+1⁄2 miles (2.4 km) north of Sturry and 3 miles (5 km) south of Herne Bay.

Chequer's Wood and Old Park is a 106.9-hectare (264-acre) biological and geological Site of Special Scientific Interest on the eastern outskirts of Canterbury in Kent. It is a Geological Conservation Review site.This site includes Fordwich Pit, which has yielded a large collection of early Acheulian handaxes dated to 620,000 to 560,000 years old. Making them the oldest reliably dated handaxes in Britain, and the site one of the oldest archaeological sites in northern Europe. The site is also notable for the discovery of other stone tool types, including scrapers, awls, flakes and cores. The tools were potentially made by Homo heidelbergensis, and the site represents the only securely dated evidence of hominins in Britain during this period (marine isotope stage 15). Habitats include alder wood in a valley bottom, acidic grassland on dry sandy soil, oak and birch woodland, scrub and a pond.

Westbere is a small village and civil parish in Kent, England, centred 4 miles (6.4 km) north-east of Canterbury city centre along the A28 road to the Isle of Thanet.
