Sterling, Virginia refers most specifically to a census-designated place (CDP) in Loudoun County, Virginia, United States. The population of the CDP as of the 2010 United States Census was 27,822. The CDP boundaries are confined to a relatively small area between Virginia State Route 28 on the west and Virginia State Route 7 on the northeast, excluding areas near SR 606 and the Dulles Town Center. A much wider region has a preferred mailing address of "Sterling, Virginia", per the United States Postal Service. Other localities included within this larger area include Arcola, Cascades, Countryside, Dulles, Dulles Town Center, Oak Grove, and Sugarland Run. The "Greater Sterling" region includes part of Washington Dulles International Airport and the former AOL corporate headquarters. Greater Sterling is also home to the National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office LWX (serving the Baltimore–Washington Metropolitan Area), as well as the Sterling Field Support Center, the National Weather Service test, research, and evaluation center for weather instruments. Dulles Town Center is a census-designated place (CDP) in Loudoun County, Virginia, United States. It is located about 7 miles (11 km) north of Washington Dulles International Airport. The CDP is the location of the Dulles Town Center shopping mall, for which it is named. The United States Postal Service considers Dulles Town Center to be a subsection of Dulles, which is itself a subsection of Sterling; none of these locations is an incorporated municipality. The population as of the 2010 United States Census was 4,601.

Dulles Town Center is a two-level enclosed shopping mall in Sterling in Loudoun County, Virginia, United States, located five miles (8.0 km) north of the Washington Dulles International Airport. As of 2022, Dulles Town Center currently features traditional tenants Macy's, JCPenney, and Dick's Sporting Goods. It currently features retailers Banana Republic, American Eagle, Hollister, H&M, and Ann Taylor. It encompasses 1,400,000 square feet (130,000 m2) of GLA and is the sole enclosed shopping center in Loudoun County. The mall serves a wide geographic area, drawing customers from Loudoun, Fairfax, Clarke, and Frederick counties in Virginia, as well as Jefferson County, West Virginia.

Loudoun School for Advanced Studies (LSAS) is a private school in Ashburn, Virginia, United States and is designed to inspire and challenge advanced students in grades 6-12.Students from LSAS worked to rehabilitate the historic Ashburn Colored School, which is located on the same property where LSAS has built its new campus.

Vestal's Gap Road and Lanesville Historic District is a national historic district located in Claude Moore Park at Sterling, Loudoun County, Virginia. It encompasses 1 contributing building and 1 contributing structure. They are "Lanesville," a two-story side-gabled frame house on a solid stone-rubble foundation built about 1807, and a section of the former Vestal's Gap Road, an 18th-century road.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

Oak Grove is a census-designated place in Loudoun County, Virginia, United States. The population as of the 2010 United States Census was 1,777.Oak Grove is located in eastern Loudoun County, on the Fairfax County border, between the communities of Sterling Park and Herndon. The Washington and Old Dominion Railroad once travelled through the community, now replaced by the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Trail.

The Broad Run Bridge and Tollhouse were built for the Leesburg Turnpike Company in Loudoun County, Virginia. The stone bridge, built about 1820, was a permanent replacement for a series of wood bridges at the location, with at least three that had been washed away between 1771 and 1803. The bridge spanned Broad Run on two arches with prominent conical buttresses. The road rose to the center of the bridge. The stone toll house stands nearby. It is a one-story three-bay house that has been progressively enlarged. The Tollhouse was purchased by the county Board of Supervisors with intentions to restore the facility.One span of the bridge collapsed, on June 21, 1972, as a result of flooding from Hurricane Agnes. The remainder of the bridge has since collapsed, leaving only the stone abutments.The bridge and tollhouse were placed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 17, 1970.

Cordoba University is an Islamic university located in Ashburn, Virginia, United States. The university is made up of the Graduate School of Islamic and Social Sciences (GSISS) and Cordoba School of Professional Studies. GSISS is part of a United States Department of Defense program for training Muslim military chaplains which produced the United States Marine Corps' first Muslim chaplain. GSISS is an affiliate member of the Washington Theological Consortium.

Countryside is a census-designated place in Loudoun County, Virginia, United States. The population as of the 2010 census was 10,072. It is located about 27 miles (43 km) northwest of Washington and is bounded by the Potomac River to the north, and by Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) to the south. Located in eastern Loudoun County, it is about 9 miles (14 km) north of Washington Dulles International Airport. It is bordered by the community of Cascades to the east and by Dulles Town Center to the south, across Route 7.

Loudoun Gateway is a planned Washington Metro station in Loudoun County, Virginia on the Silver Line. It will be located at SR 606 (Old Ox Road) and the ramps to SR 267. Originally planned to begin operations in 2018, the station is now is now expected to open in July 2022. In April 2015, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority approved the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors' name for the stop.
