Battle of Old Byland

Scawton is a village and former civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. The hamlet lies just east of Sutton Bank, north of the A170 road, and 5 miles (8 km) west of Helmsley, in the Hambleton Hills. The wider parish was the setting for the Battle of Old Byland, on Scawton Moor to the south. The road through the village used to link the two abbeys at Byland and Rievaulx, with the church, and possibly the village pub, being instigated by the monks for the use of travellers. In 1961 the parish had a population of 84.

From 1974 to 2023 it was in the Ryedale district. The toponym probably means 'fords', from Middle English wathes and ultimately from Old Norse vath. The village is at the junction of several small streams. Another suggestion is that the name derives from the Old English Wæsse, meaning swamp.Wass was formerly a township in the parish of Kilburn, in 1866 Wass became a separate civil parish, on 1 24 March 1887 the parish was abolished and merged with Byland Abbey to form "Byland with Wass". In 1881 the parish had a population of 113.To the east of the village is Wass Grange, in which building the monks of Byland Abbey stored their grain before the Dissolution of the Monasteries. In May 2009 the nuns of Stanbrook Abbey, in Worcestershire, re-established themselves in a purpose-built convent near Wass.

Stanbrook Abbey is a Catholic contemplative Benedictine Monastery with the status of an abbey, located at Wass, North Yorkshire, England. The community was founded in 1625 at Cambrai in Flanders (then part of the Spanish Netherlands, now in France), under the auspices of the English Benedictine Congregation. After being imprisoned during the French Revolution, the surviving nuns fled to England and in 1838 settled at Stanbrook, Callow End, Worcestershire, where a new abbey was built. With the steep contemporary decline in monastic life, the community left their Grade II-listed property, to relocate to Wass in the North York Moors National Park in 2009. The former Worcestershire monastic estate, as of 2020, was operated as a luxury hotel.

Stocking Abbey was an abbey in the village of Oldstead, North Yorkshire, England.The abbey at Stocking was built in 1147, originally for Savigniac monks, but soon became Cistercian. It was meant to be a temporary establishment as no suitable site for a permanent settlement had been found yet. The monks that worshipped at Stocking moved to Byland Abbey 30 years later in 1177.Excavations and archaeological investigations have offered evidence that the cloister and small stone church may have existed on the site of Oldstead Hall, though the proof is not conclusive.

Hambleton is a hamlet on the A170 road between Thirsk and Pickering in North Yorkshire, England. It lies on the Hambleton Hills 1 mile east of Sutton Bank. The 1856 Ordnance Survey map shows the Hambleton Hotel (later the Hambleton Inn) at the location, but no hamlet. By 1893 the wider settlement had appeared. The location was historically associated with horse racing. Horse racing here is recorded from the early 17th century, although in 1775 races were transferred to the Knavesmire in York. Training has continued at Hambleton, associated with nearby Hambleton House.The Hambleton Inn closed in 2015.Most of the hamlet is in the civil parish of Cold Kirby in Ryedale district. The south part of the hamlet, including part of Hambleton Inn, is in the civil parish of Kilburn High and Low in Hambleton district.

Newburgh is a village and civil parish located in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England. The population at the 2011 Census was less than 100. Details are maintained in the civil parish of Coxwold. The village is mainly a large farming community, the main road passing through the village is 'Colley Broach Road'. Newburgh village leads right into Newburgh Grange. The local schools and colleges are about 10 minutes drive away in either Ampleforth, Oulston or Thirsk.

Coxwold is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England, in the North York Moors National Park. It is 18 miles north of York and is where the Rev. Laurence Sterne wrote A Sentimental Journey.
