Newburgh, North Yorkshire

Newburgh Priory is a Grade 1 listed Tudor building near Coxwold, North Yorkshire, England. Originally a house of Augustinian canons, it was founded in 1145 and became a family home following the dissolution of the priory in 1538. The present house was built in the late 16th century, substantially remodelled by 4th Viscount Fauconberg 1725-45 and further restored in the 1960s. The 40 acres of grounds contain a water garden, walled garden, topiary yews and woodland walks. It is one of the rumoured burial sites of Oliver Cromwell. The house was once the home of the Bellasis family and the seat of the Earls of Fauconberg until the death of Lady Charlotte Bellayse in 1825, when the property passed to the Wombwell family via the eldest son of her sister, Sir George Wombwell, 3rd Baronet.

Oulston is a village and civil parish in Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England. It lies about 3 miles (5 km) north-east of Easingwold. Remains of a Roman villa have been found in the area. The village is within the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Byland with Wass is a civil parish in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, England. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 120, increasing to an estimated 160 in 2015. (At the 2011 Census the parish was included with the parish of Oldstead and not counted separately.) It covers Byland Abbey and Wass, in the North York Moors, and shares a parish council with Oldstead.

Coxwold railway station was on the Thirsk and Malton line of the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway in North Yorkshire, England that served the village of Coxwold. The station opened on 1 June 1853.The station was host to a camping coach from 1935 to 1939, and possibly one for some of 1934, the station was also used as an overnight stop for touring camping coach service in 1935.The station closed for regular passenger traffic in 1953 but was subsequently used for occasional special trains until 1958.The line remained open for goods traffic until 10 August 1964, after which the track was subsequently lifted.The station has since been converted into a private house.

Wass is a village in the civil parish of Byland with Wass, in North Yorkshire, England, in the North York Moors National Park. A short distance from the village lie the ruins of Byland Abbey. Despite the small size of the village (population about 100) there is a pub, the Stapylton Arms. It is at the foot of Wass Bank and has views of the surrounding countryside. From 1974 to 2023 it was in the Ryedale district. The toponym probably means 'fords', from Middle English wathes and ultimately from Old Norse vath. The village is at the junction of several small streams. Another suggestion is that the name derives from the Old English Wæsse, meaning swamp.Wass was formerly a township in the parish of Kilburn, in 1866 Wass became a separate civil parish, on 1 24 March 1887 the parish was abolished and merged with Byland Abbey to form "Byland with Wass". In 1881 the parish had a population of 113.To the east of the village is Wass Grange, in which building the monks of Byland Abbey stored their grain before the Dissolution of the Monasteries. In May 2009 the nuns of Stanbrook Abbey, in Worcestershire, re-established themselves in a purpose-built convent near Wass.

Stanbrook Abbey is a Catholic contemplative Benedictine Monastery with the status of an abbey, located at Wass, North Yorkshire, England. The community was founded in 1625 at Cambrai in Flanders (then part of the Spanish Netherlands, now in France), under the auspices of the English Benedictine Congregation. After being imprisoned during the French Revolution, the surviving nuns fled to England and in 1838 settled at Stanbrook, Callow End, Worcestershire, where a new abbey was built. With the steep contemporary decline in monastic life, the community left their Grade II-listed property, to relocate to Wass in the North York Moors National Park in 2009. The former Worcestershire monastic estate, as of 2020, was operated as a luxury hotel.

Coxwold is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England, in the North York Moors National Park. It is 18 miles north of York and is where the Rev. Laurence Sterne wrote A Sentimental Journey.

The Fauconberg Arms is a 17th-century Coaching inn in Coxwold, North Yorkshire, England. The village and estate were given to the Fauconberg family by Henry VIII. The property is still owned by the Newburgh Priory Estate and is named after the Earl of Fauconberg. It serves beer and a selection of food and is close to Shandy Hall and the Kilburn White Horse.The Fauconberg Arms re-opened in November 2006 after being closed for almost two years. The new proprietors - Simon and Helen Rheinberg and their daughter and her husband, Harriet and Jonathan Chadwick, have refurbished the pub's bar, cellar, dining room and kitchens. The renovated en-suite B&B bedrooms reopened in spring 2007.The inn was highly commended in Yorkshire Pub of the Year 2013, and received a good review from The Yorkshire Post (Pub of the Week) in April 2013, but a November 2014 review thought little of the cuisine.

St Michael's Church is an Anglican parish church in Coxwold, North Yorkshire, England. The Parish of Coxwold is part of the Church of England's Diocese of York.The earliest church on the site dates to the Anglo-Saxon period. That church was replaced by a Norman one built in the 11th century, and that in turn was replaced with the present church which was built by 1430. The church is in the Perpendicular style, and among its unusual features are an octagonal tower and a tongue-shaped altar rail. The church is a grade I listed building.The church is the resting place of Rear Admiral Lord Adolphus FitzClarence, an illegitimate son of Prince William, the future William IV, and his mistress Dorothea Jordan.

Shandy Hall is a writer's house museum in the former home of the Rev. Laurence Sterne in Coxwold, North Yorkshire, England. Sterne lived there from 1760 to 1768 as perpetual curate of Coxwold. He is remembered for his novels The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman and A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy.

Ampleforth railway station, served the village of Ampleforth, in the Northern English county of North Yorkshire. It was located on a line which ran from Pickering to the East Coast Main Line at Thirsk. The station was close to the noted Ampleforth College although passengers for the college used the station at Gilling further east as this was more convenient for onward transfer to the college.
