Sargent's Garage

The Perry and Brainard Block, also known as the North Des Moines Town Hall, is a historic building located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. The structure was built between 1888 and 1889 and the second floor served as the city hall for the suburb of North Des Moines. In the late 19th century Des Moines actively sought to annex its Victorian suburbs, with North Des Moines being the largest of these communities. This is the only known public building that has survived from the Annexation Movement era. The local government and community of North Des Moines debated annexation, not only of the municipalities, but of their schools as well. It was also the only community where the residents voted on the annexation issue, and this building also served as a polling place. The building served as the location of the celebration after the referendums passed in 1890. After its use as the city hall, the second floor became the lodge for the Ancient Order of United Workmen. The building's commercial space is also significant in that it is in one of two commercial areas in North Des Moines, which indicates the size and influence the community had in the late 19th century. It was one of the first of the commercial buildings that were constructed at this intersection. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. It was listed in 2011 as one of Iowa's Most Endangered Properties.

The Wherry Block, also known as Wherry's Hall, Scruby Brothers Grocery, and Scruby's Grocery Store, is a historic building located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States.

The Maine is a historic building located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. This three-story, brick structure was completed in 1913. It features 18 units, an "H" plan, a series of ribbon windows, stone lintels and decorative stone trimming. At the rear of the property is a two-story brick automobile garage that shares the historic designation with the apartment building. The date of its construction is uncertain. The building is located on Sixth Avenue, which by the turn of the 20th century had become a major route utilized by vehicular traffic and streetcar lines. Its proximity to this transportation corridor illustrates the emergence of higher and denser residential use in this area of Des Moines. The apartment building and garage were listed together on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

The Byron A. Beeson House, also known as Mission Temple Academy, is a historic building located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. Built c. 1890, the 2½-story structure features balloon frame construction, a complex roof system, and wrap-around front porch. Its flared cornice is considered unusual. It was originally a single-family dwelling that later became and education facility associated with the Church of God in Christ. It is also associated with Byron A. Beeson who served as Treasurer of Iowa from 1891 to 1895, and as Adjutant General of the Iowa National Guard around the same time. The house's significance is derived from its location in suburban North Des Moines and its complex roof system. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. A stable along the alley behind the house shares the historic designation.

The C.H. Baker Double House, also known as the Indiana Apartments, The Manor, and The Manor House, is an historic building located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. Built from 1901 to 1902, it is a two-story structure that features balloon frame construction with brick veneer. It was designed in the Colonial Revival style by the Des Moines architectural firm of Smith & Gutterson. Its significance is attributed to its location on the Sixth Avenue streetcar route "to capitalize on the appeal of public transportation." It was one of the first multiple-family rental properties along the avenue, and it was built for upper-middle class occupancy. It was part of the movement toward denser residential use in this area of the city. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

Kromer Flats, also known as the Drummond Apartments, is a historic building located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. This 2½-story, brick structure was completed in 1905. It features Renaissance Revival design elements, a flat roof, orange-yellow brick, cast concrete trim, four oriel windows on the main facade, two level porches in the rear, a two-story bay on both the north and south elevations, and three air shafts that penetrate the buildings from the rear. It originally had four apartments on each floor. The building is located on Sixth Avenue, which by the turn of the 20th century had become a major route utilized by vehicular traffic and streetcar lines. Its proximity to this transportation corridor illustrates the emergence of higher and denser residential use in this area of Des Moines. It is also significant for its association with the Des Moines architectural firm of Liebbe, Nourse & Rasmussen who designed it. The apartment building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

The Sixth and Forest Historic District is located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. It is a Victorian era suburban commercial district on the northeastern and northwestern corners of the junction of 6th and Forest Avenues, and originally contained six buildings. The buildings on the northeast corner have subsequently been torn down. The historic district has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1996. It is a part of the Towards a Greater Des Moines MPS.

The Polk County Homestead and Trust Company Addition Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. At the time of its nomination the district consisted of 86 resources, including 48 contributing buildings, 11 contributing structures, 18 non-contributing buildings, and nine non-contributing structures. The end of the 19th-century saw the rise of the Victorian suburbs around Des Moines. This was a period of economic growth for the metropolitan area. The largest of these suburbs was North Des Moines. It was connected to Des Moines by way of three streetcar lines, whiched added to its attractiveness. Local real estate investors established the Polk County Homestead & Trust Co. to develop the northern portion of North Des Moines in partnership with the Prospect Park Improvement Company. This area was platted in 1884. Polk County Homestead & Trust Co. bought this property from the Prospect Park Improvement Company, and the two advertised the addition together. The streets, alleys, and large town lots of the plat are laid out on a grid, which differs from the surrounding area's curvilinear streets and irregular lots further north and more erratic development to the south. The historic district's period of significance is 1886 when the first house was built, to 1945 when some of the single-family dwellings were converted into multi-family dwellings. The addition is dominated by the Late Victorian and Colonial Revival styles. The Queen Anne style was popular in this middle and upper-middle-class neighborhood before the Panic of 1893. Five houses are individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places: the Lowry W. and Hattie N. Goode House (1886), the Chaffee-Hunter House (1886), the Dr. John B. and Anna M. Hatton House (c. 1887), the Dr. Anna E. and Andrew A. Johnstone House (1887), and the William A. and Etta Baum Cottage (1891). The former Norman Wiles Seventh-day Adventist School (c. 1925) is the only institutional building in the historic district.

The Walter M. Bartlett Double House is a historic building located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. Built in 1913, the two-story structure features balloon frame construction. The Neoclassical style building originally had a large portico on the main facade that has been covered over. The window in the pediment is still visible. In addition to its architecture, its significance is attributed to its location on the Sixth Avenue streetcar route. It was part of the development of the area from single-family dwellings to denser residential use. It is also a subtype of the double house called a "two-unit flat", also known as a "double-decker." The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

The Charles H. and Lena May Weitz House is a historic building located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. This 1½-story frame dwelling features a gable-front-and-wing configuration, a front porch located in the el of the facade, a single-story bay window on the south elevation, a dormer window on the facade, and steeply pitched roofs. Behind the house is a two-story, brick outbuilding. It is one of the few brick out buildings in the neighborhood. Both were constructed about 1891 by Charles H. Weitz for his home and his workshop. He was a partner and elder son of the founder of Charles Weitz & Sons, which was a prominent Des Moines construction firm in the late 19th and early 20th-century. During his time with the company, Charles H. Weitz "introduced modern methods of construction to this family business, thereby assuring its potential for growth." The Weitz Company grew to become a nationally recognized full-service general contractor. The house and outbuilding were listed together on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

The Julius Scheibe Cottage at 815 College Ave. in Des Moines, Iowa, United States, was built in 1898. It was a work of architect George E. Hallett. It and the adjacent house (no longer extant) split a corner land parcel and both faced south, while all other houses in the area faced the east or west ends of their parcels. The "parcelization of corner lots" this way increased density and the value of their real estate. Elements of American Movements architecture (American Craftsman architecture)in the house's design include its side-gabled roof, its inset front porch, and also its "symmetrically conceived facade; the facade dormer window with its inset configuration, deck, and bulkheads; the pent roof embellishing the side gables; and the multi-pane windows in the dormer." Houses with similar styling dot the neighborhood, including at the N.S. Wales House at 1814 West 9th Street, also designed by Hallett, and at 1460 5th Avenue. This and other Hallett ones include interior amenities such as fireplaces that are not often found in residences this small.: 12 It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. It was deemed significant as an example of "suburban architecture in the former City of North Des Moines, particularly to the stylistic influence of late 19th and early 20th Century American Movements, as practiced in that Victorian suburb and exemplified in the designs of George E. Hallett.": 8 

The Oaklands Historic District is located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. It was a late 19th-century residential area for upper and upper middle class residents of what was then a suburb of North Des Moines. It was also the first naturalistic suburban subdivision in the Des Moines area. The district has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1996. It is part of the Towards a Greater Des Moines MPS.
