Sixth and Forest Historic District

Kromer Flats, also known as the Drummond Apartments, is a historic building located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. This 2½-story, brick structure was completed in 1905. It features Renaissance Revival design elements, a flat roof, orange-yellow brick, cast concrete trim, four oriel windows on the main facade, two level porches in the rear, a two-story bay on both the north and south elevations, and three air shafts that penetrate the buildings from the rear. It originally had four apartments on each floor. The building is located on Sixth Avenue, which by the turn of the 20th century had become a major route utilized by vehicular traffic and streetcar lines. Its proximity to this transportation corridor illustrates the emergence of higher and denser residential use in this area of Des Moines. It is also significant for its association with the Des Moines architectural firm of Liebbe, Nourse & Rasmussen who designed it. The apartment building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

The Walter M. Bartlett Double House is a historic building located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. Built in 1913, the two-story structure features balloon frame construction. The Neoclassical style building originally had a large portico on the main facade that has been covered over. The window in the pediment is still visible. In addition to its architecture, its significance is attributed to its location on the Sixth Avenue streetcar route. It was part of the development of the area from single-family dwellings to denser residential use. It is also a subtype of the double house called a "two-unit flat", also known as a "double-decker." The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

The Charles H. and Lena May Weitz House is a historic building located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. This 1½-story frame dwelling features a gable-front-and-wing configuration, a front porch located in the el of the facade, a single-story bay window on the south elevation, a dormer window on the facade, and steeply pitched roofs. Behind the house is a two-story, brick outbuilding. It is one of the few brick out buildings in the neighborhood. Both were constructed about 1891 by Charles H. Weitz for his home and his workshop. He was a partner and elder son of the founder of Charles Weitz & Sons, which was a prominent Des Moines construction firm in the late 19th and early 20th-century. During his time with the company, Charles H. Weitz "introduced modern methods of construction to this family business, thereby assuring its potential for growth." The Weitz Company grew to become a nationally recognized full-service general contractor. The house and outbuilding were listed together on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

The Byron A. Beeson House, also known as Mission Temple Academy, is a historic building located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. Built c. 1890, the 2½-story structure features balloon frame construction, a complex roof system, and wrap-around front porch. Its flared cornice is considered unusual. It was originally a single-family dwelling that later became and education facility associated with the Church of God in Christ. It is also associated with Byron A. Beeson who served as Treasurer of Iowa from 1891 to 1895, and as Adjutant General of the Iowa National Guard around the same time. The house's significance is derived from its location in suburban North Des Moines and its complex roof system. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. A stable along the alley behind the house shares the historic designation.

The Bates Park Historic District is located on the north side Des Moines, Iowa, United States. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1996. It is part of the Towards a Greater Des Moines MPS.

The New Lawn is a historic building located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. This three-story, brick structure was completed in 1915. It features seven units, an U-shaped plan, a symmetrical facade with projecting wings, polychrome brick veneer, a series of quadruple ribbon windows, and a flat roof. The building is located on Sixth Avenue, which by the turn of the 20th century had become a major route utilized by vehicular traffic and streetcar lines. Its proximity to this transportation corridor illustrates the emergence of higher and denser residential use in this area of Des Moines. The apartment building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

The Burnstein-Malin Grocery, also known as the Malin's Kosher Delicatessen, Pickle Barrel Delicatessen, and The Pickle Barrel, was a historic building located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. This commercial building was constructed in two parts. The first part was a 2½-story frame house built back from Sixth Avenue for Frank W. Whitcomb in 1896. It was converted into Burnstein Grocery in 1923. The number of commercial establishments along this street increased five-fold between 1920 and 1937, and the Whitcomb house exemplified this transition. The single-story brick section on the front was completed in 1940. The two sections shared a common wall. This was one of several modified residence-specialty stores that were located along Sixth Avenue from the 1930s through the 1950s, but by the end of the century it was only one of two that remained standing. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. It has subsequently been torn down and it was delisted from the National Register in 2019.

Sargent's Garage, also known as the Robinson's Paint and Body Shop, Grand Spring Body and Paint Company, and Fabio's, is a historic building located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. Completed in 1924, this single-story commercial building emplifies vernacular commercial architecture. It features a rectangular plan, wood siding now covered with metal, and a flat roof. It originally had a symmetrical facade, which has now been altered. Its significance is that it is an early automobile repair and body shop, which was a new architectural form that was emerging in early 20th-century Iowa. It continued to serve this purpose until 1997 when it suffered a minor fire. The building sat vacant for a period of time until it was renovated and reopened. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

The William W. and Elizabeth J. Ainsworth House, also known as the Catholic Worker House and the Dingman House, is an historic building located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. Ainsworth was a Des Moines businessman who was engaged in various professional occupations. His wife Elizabeth took title to this property in 1886, and they built this 21⁄2-story, frame, Queen Anne house in what was then the suburban community of North Des Moines. It features a hip roof, intersecting gables, a front porch, an enclosed porch in the back, and 2-story bay windows on the south and east elevations. Built as a single-family dwelling, it is now a half-way house for social services operated by the Catholic Worker Movement. The house calls attention to the increased importance of North Des Moines as a residential neighborhood for business and professional people in the late 19th-century Des Moines area. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

The Wherry Block, also known as Wherry's Hall, Scruby Brothers Grocery, and Scruby's Grocery Store, is a historic building located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States.

The F.E. Haley Double House, also known as the Gordon Apartments, is a historic building located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. This double house is significant as being one of the first of this kind of building type built in the Des Moines area. The double house was developed in this area starting in the Victorian era. This 2½-story, brick Colonial Revival was built in 1897 by Felix E. Haley. He managed the building, but never lived here, suggesting he had it built for rental/investment purposes. The building features a symmetrical facade, brick in several colors and textures, and a sloping flat roof. While it originally had a full-length front porch, this one is not the original. The four lunette-shaped windows in the frieze feature shield-shaped panes. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

The Perry and Brainard Block, also known as the North Des Moines Town Hall, is a historic building located in Des Moines, Iowa, United States. The structure was built between 1888 and 1889 and the second floor served as the city hall for the suburb of North Des Moines. In the late 19th century Des Moines actively sought to annex its Victorian suburbs, with North Des Moines being the largest of these communities. This is the only known public building that has survived from the Annexation Movement era. The local government and community of North Des Moines debated annexation, not only of the municipalities, but of their schools as well. It was also the only community where the residents voted on the annexation issue, and this building also served as a polling place. The building served as the location of the celebration after the referendums passed in 1890. After its use as the city hall, the second floor became the lodge for the Ancient Order of United Workmen. The building's commercial space is also significant in that it is in one of two commercial areas in North Des Moines, which indicates the size and influence the community had in the late 19th century. It was one of the first of the commercial buildings that were constructed at this intersection. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. It was listed in 2011 as one of Iowa's Most Endangered Properties.
