St Mary Magdalene, Geddington

Geddington is a village and civil parish on the A4300, previously A43, in North Northamptonshire between Kettering and Corby. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 1,503, virtually unchanged from 1,504 at the 2001 census.The villages name means 'Farm/settlement connected Gaete' or 'farm/settlement connected with Geiti'. Alternatively, 'goat place farm/settlement'.The village contains an Eleanor cross. The monument dates from 1294, when the crosses were raised as a memorial by Edward I (1239–1307) to his late wife, Eleanor of Castile (1241–1290). There were originally 12 monuments, one in each resting place of the funeral procession as they travelled to Westminster Abbey. The Geddington cross is one of only three Eleanor crosses still standing; the other two being in Hardingstone (near Northampton) and Waltham Cross, although remnants and reconstructions of the lost ones can also be seen at other sites. The Geddington cross is regarded as the best preserved.The village was also formerly home to a Royal hunting lodge which was used as a base by monarchs for hunting within the Royal forest of Rockingham. The building has subsequently been lost; however, the "King's Door" within the church of St Mary Magdalene, Geddington in the village remains, it was the entrance through which the King could enter the building while staying at the lodge. The old main road runs through the village and crosses the River Ise by a spectacular mediaeval bridge. The bridge, built in 1250, has five arches and three pedestrian refuges. A more recent ford also runs alongside the bridge. The village is famous for its annual boxing day squirt in which a barrel attached to a rope across the river is squirted from one side of the ford to the other by competing fire crews from Geddington and Kettering. Geddington has two public houses: namely, The Star Inn and The White Hart. The village has no shop and the small post office/ newsagents has now closed.

Boughton House is a country house in the parish of Weekley in Northamptonshire, England, situated about 3 miles (4.8 km) north-east of Kettering. It is situated within an estate of 11,000 acres (4,451.5 ha). The present house was built by Ralph Montagu, 1st Duke of Montagu (d.1709), immediately after 1683 when he inherited the estate from his father, whose own grandfather Sir Edward Montagu, Lord Chief Justice, had bought it in 1528. The 1st Duke had served as the Ambassador to France during the 1670s and was much influenced by contemporary French architecture and garden design, especially by the Palace of Versailles, which style he reproduced at Boughton.It is now one of the seats of the builder's descendant Richard Montagu Douglas Scott, 10th Duke of Buccleuch and is famed for its beauty, its collections, and for having survived virtually unchanged since the 17th century. While possessing a medieval core, its exterior evokes a 17th century French chateau, causing it to be termed The English Versailles (a moniker also applied to Petworth House in Sussex, amongst others). The magnificence of the collections at Boughton is explained by the ducal family surname Montagu-Douglas-Scott, which reflects the union of three great families and their estates through marriage: Montagu, the Dukes of Montagu; Douglas, the Dukes of Queensberry; and Scott, the Dukes of Buccleuch. Boughton contains a comprehensive collection of furniture, tapestries, porcelain and carpets. The art collection includes many notable paintings such as The Adoration of the Shepherds by El Greco, Thomas Gainsborough’s portrait of Mary Montagu, and a celebrated series of grisailles by Van Dyck, and Breaking Cover by John Wootton. Once a servants' hall, located next to the kitchen, the armoury is now home to what many experts regard as one of the finest privately held armouries in the country. It is an historic collection that owes much to John, 2nd Duke of Montagu (1690–1749). Boughton House is a venue for events, weddings, corporate activities and organised groups. The House opens on specific dates for guided tours.

Newton, sometimes called Newton in the Willows, is a small village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Newton and Little Oakley, in the North Northamptonshire district, in the ceremonial county of Northamptonshire, England. The village is in the Ise valley. Newton and Little Oakley had a population at the 2001 census of 147, decreasing to 126 at the 2011 Census. It has a combined parish council with Geddington. The villages name means 'New farm/settlement'.The Grade II* listed parish church of St Faith in Newton is now deconsecrated. It is largely 14th century, with a 15th-century tower and chancel of 1858 by William Slater. The novelist J. L. Carr fought to prevent the redundancy of the church. The church building was run as Newton Field Centre, an educational centre but closed as unviable in 2018 and has only one trustee. A dovecote, northeast of the church, is a Grade I listed building; it is described as an "outstanding dovecote, exhibiting craftsmanship of the highest quality". It was associated with a mansion of the Tresham family. In 1607, Newton was the site of the suppression of the Midland Revolt, a peasants' revolt against enclosure; at least 46 rebels were killed. A memorial has been erected by the church where prisoners were held.

An area of 39.1 hectares in the north-west corner of Geddington Chase has been designated a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). It is located south-east of Corby in Northamptonshire.Geddington Chase is a surviving fragment of the medieval Royal Forest of Rockingham. Most of the Chase is commercially managed, and the SSSI is an area of semi-natural wet ash/maple woodland on Midland boulder clay. The ground flora is diverse, with plants including bluebell, dog's mercury, tufted hair-grass, and a few wild daffodils.The site is private land with no public access.

Weekley is a small village and civil parish in the English county of Northamptonshire, on the outskirts of Kettering. The village's name probably means, 'wood/clearing by the Romano-British vicus', a trading settlement. There are two known Romano-British destinations in the surrounding area. On the other hand, 'wych-elm wood/clearing' might be an alternative derivation.At the time of the 2001 census, the parish's population was 242 people, increasing to 297 at the 2011 Census.Many houses in Weekley have thatched roofs. The busy A4300 road runs through the village.

Little Oakley is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Newton and Little Oakley, in the North Northamptonshire district, in the ceremonial county of Northamptonshire, England. It is situated between Corby and Kettering. In 1931 the parish had a population of 85. On 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Great Oakley to form Oakley. Inside the village is St. Peter's church, which dates from the thirteenth century. Opposite the church is Primrose Cottage, a stone-built cottage dating back to the seventeenth century, where several generations of one family once lived and are now buried in the church yard. The villages name means 'Oak-tree wood/clearing'.

Warkton is a small nucleated village and civil parish in the English county of Northamptonshire. It is approximately three miles northeast of the town of Kettering and seven miles west-northwest of Thrapston, and forms part of North Northamptonshire. At the time of the 2001 census, the parish's population was 144 people, reducing slightly to 136 at the 2011 Census.The village's name means 'Farm/settlement which is connected to a man named Weorc(a)'.The Grade I listed parish church of St Edmund is particularly noted for containing four Baroque marble monuments erected between the 1750s and 1830s to members of the local Montagu family of Boughton House. The monuments are housed in four niches in the specially constructed chancel. The original medieval (probably Norman) chancel was demolished to make way for its construction. The east window is large and of clear glass, flooding the chancel with light to show the white marble monuments at their best. Monuments to John Montagu, 2nd Duke of Montagu (1690–1749), and his wife, Mary Churchill (1689–1752) are by the renowned sculptor Louis-François Roubiliac. A third monument to Mary Montagu (1711–1775), daughter of John and Mary, is by Pieter Mathias van Gelder (1742–1824). These first three monuments are of very high quality, rivalling the Roubilliacs in Westminster Abbey. The fourth monument, to Elizabeth Scott, Duchess of Buccleuch (1743–1827), daughter of Mary, is by Thomas Campbell (1790–1858) and, though very fine, is of significantly lesser quality than the other three. The private family burial vault, adjacent to the chancel, contains the mortal remains of those celebrated in the monuments, together with their children, many who died in infancy, and Ralph Montagu, 1st Duke of Montagu (1638–c. 1709). Local villages include Barton Seagrave, Weekley, Geddington and Grafton Underwood.

River Ise and Meadows is a 13.5-hectare (33-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest along the River Ise in Northamptonshire between Geddington and the Kettering to Corby railway line east of Rushton.The river is described by Natural England as "the best example in the county of a lowland river on clay, fed by base-rich water". The banks have tall fen, woodland and grassland, and there is also a species rich flood meadow. The river has many bends and loops, with silty pools and gravel shoals. The invertebrates are diverse, and there is a population of the nationally declining freshwater crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes.The eastern section runs through private land, but the western end, between Barford Bridge and the railway line, is part of the Barford Wood and Meadows nature reserve, managed by the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire.

Kettering Buccleuch Academy is a mixed all-through school and sixth form located in Kettering in the English county of Northamptonshire. The school educates pupils from the age of 4 to 18. The school was formed in 2009 from the merger of Avondale Infants School, Avondale Junior School and Montagu School (secondary). The name of the school refers to the Dukes of Buccleuch, who have had connections with Kettering stretching back for almost 500 years. The school moved into a new combined building on the former Montagu School site in 2013.The school is an academy sponsored by United Learning, and offers GCSEs and BTECs as programmes of study for pupils, while sixth form students can choose to study from range of A Levels and further BTECs.

Royal Air Force Grafton Underwood or more simply RAF Grafton Underwood is a former Royal Air Force station located 4 miles (6.4 km) northeast of Kettering, Northamptonshire, England.

Alt-Fest was a crowd-sourced alternative music and lifestyle festival, intended to run from 2014 onwards at Boughton Estate, Kettering, England. The inaugural festival promised six stages and 180 bands, held over a three-day period. Headlining acts included Marilyn Manson, VNV Nation and The Cult; also due to appear were Fields of the Nephilim, Gary Numan, The Last Cry, Arch Enemy and Amen. Instead, the event was cancelled due to lack of funding, with the controlling company consequently going into liquidation.
