On 10 March 1949 a Lockheed Lodestar aircraft became airborne at Coolangatta, Queensland, Australia for a flight to Brisbane. Before reaching a height of 300 feet (90 m) it suddenly pitched nose-up, stalled and crashed onto its belly beyond the end of the airstrip. Fuel from the aircraft's tanks caught fire and the aircraft burned fiercely. All 21 people on board died, either of injuries during the crash or in the ensuing conflagration. It was the worst civil aviation accident in Queensland at the time, and the second-worst accident in Australia. It occurred exactly three years after the worst, the ANA DC-3 crash near Hobart on 10 March 1946.Investigation of the crash uncovered some errors in the information used to determine the position of the aircraft's centre of gravity. It became clear that the aircraft had taken off with its centre of gravity slightly outside the approved limits. Investigators also found evidence that the takeoff may have been performed with the elevator trim tab still set for landing. If the elevator trim tab had not been set for takeoff this would have been exacerbated by the incorrect position of the centre of gravity and the aircraft would have been uncontrollable.

Gold Coast Airport (formerly known as Coolangatta Airport) (IATA: OOL, ICAO: YBCG) is an international Australian airport located at the southern end of the Gold Coast and approximately 90 km (56 mi) south of Brisbane, within the South East Queensland agglomeration. The entrance to the airport is situated in the suburb of Bilinga near Coolangatta. The main runway itself cuts through the state borders of Queensland and New South Wales. During summer, these states are in two different time zones. The Gold Coast Airport operates on Queensland Time (year-round AEST / UTC+10). For the 2015–16 financial year, Gold Coast Airport exceeded 6 million passengers. It is the seventh-busiest airport in Australia, and the busiest outside a state capital, in terms of passengers, and eighth-busiest in aircraft movements.

The Gold Coast Desalination Plant is a 125 ML/d (46 gigalitres per year) reverse osmosis, water desalination plant located in Bilinga, a seaside suburb of the Gold Coast, in Queensland, Australia. It supplies water to the South East Queensland region via the South East Queensland Water Grid. The plant first supplied water to the grid in February 2009. It is owned by Seqwater and operated by Veolia. As of Summer 2020/2021, the plant is operating at maximum production capacity.

Tugun ( TOO-gən) is a beach-side coastal suburb in the City of Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. In the 2016 census, Tugun had a population of 6,588 people.It borders New South Wales. Some locals refer to the suburb as Tugz (pronounced choo-gs).

John Flynn Private Hospital is an acute care facility in the southern Gold Coast suburb of Tugun. The 345 bed hospital provides services to people of southern Gold Coast and parts of the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. Originally opened as the Moran Hospital of Excellence with the Moran Clinic. The hospital was not successful and was left abandoned by 1991. The hospital was revived by 1993 and renamed John Flynn who was responsible in 1928 for the first outback medical services which became known as the Flying Doctor Service. John Flynn Hospital complex consists of the main hospital building, specialist medical suites, the John Flynn Cancer Centre, and the hospital also has an onsite 24-hour pharmacy.

Len Peak Oval is a multi-sports venue in Coolangatta, a suburb in the Gold Coast, Australia. It includes an Australian rules football ground and has the unique distinction of being located less than 50 metres from the Queensland-New South Wales border. It has been used by the Coolangatta Tweed Blues men's and women's teams as their home game base. The Oval is named after former Gold Coast Mayor Alderman Len Peak.

Jazzland Dance Hall, also known as Jazzland Dance Palais, was a dance hall located in Coolangatta, Queensland. The venue was built in 1928 and was used as an entertainment venue throughout the first half of the twentieth century. Though no longer used for dances and social events, the building remains at the western end of McLean Street at the intersection with Griffith Street. The former dance hall is listed on the Gold Coast Local Heritage Register as a rare surviving purpose built ballroom built in Queensland, Australia during the interwar period and in acknowledgement of its role of the social life of the region. It is also recognised in the Coolangatta Local Area Plan for its heritage and character components. In 2002 the building was considered for the Queensland State Heritage Register but was not listed.

Piggabeen Sports Complex is a sporting venue situated in the suburb of Tweed Heads West in Tweed Heads, New South Wales, Australia. Predominantly used as a rugby league ground, it is the home ground of the Tweed Heads Seagulls, who play in the Queensland Cup. The ground is also used by the club's junior rugby league teams.

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is a heritage-listed zoological garden at 28 Tomewin Street, Currumbin, Queensland, Australia. It was built in 1947 onwards. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 18 September 2009. The sanctuary is world-renowned for its feeding of huge flocks of free-flying wild rainbow lorikeets, which come to the sanctuary to feast off the special mixture which the lorikeets eat. The multitude of events, shows and attractions include dingo encounters, free flight bird shows and feeding of the park's massive saltwater crocodile. The park also contains a serious aspect of its work and exhibits, and behind the scenes includes a state-of-the-art veterinary and rehabilitation hospital. The sanctuary was opened as the Currumbin Bird Sanctuary by Alex Griffiths in 1947 as a scheme to stop the local lorikeet population destroying his flower plantations. The lorikeets still flock to the sanctuary twice daily to be fed by visitors. The sanctuary now houses one of the largest collections of Australian native species in the world. Exhibits include Tasmanian devils, a reptile house and in December 2017 the sanctuary opened their new exotics precinct Lost Valley which is home to lemurs, red pandas, capybara, cotton-top tamarins, tree kangaroos and one of largest walk-through aviary in the Southern Hemisphere with free flying birds. The sanctuary also has a miniature railway that has been operating since 1964. In May 2011, the hospital has appealed for donations and government support as it faces a funding shortage that may force it to turn away injured wildlife.
