Because it provides drinking water for Manchester, swimming and water skiing are not allowed there. Popular sports on the lake are sailing, fishing, and kayaking. The recreational trails along the lake provide views of the lake and the town of Auburn. Besides flowing into the Manchester water system, the lake's water feeds Cohas Brook, leading to the Merrimack River. Massabesic is a Native American name meaning "place of much water" or "near the great brook."The lake is classified as a cold- and warmwater fishery.

As of 2010, 445 students attended Trinity High School. Every member of the class of 2010 was accepted into college. It was the fourth year in a row this has occurred.

Elliot Hospital is an acute care hospital in Manchester, New Hampshire, United States. The Elliot was established as a charitable trust in 1880, was legally incorporated as a not-for-profit organization by an act of the New Hampshire Legislature in 1881, and opened its doors as the first community general hospital in New Hampshire on April 17, 1890. Today the hospital has 296 beds and is a regional trauma center (American College of Surgeons Level II) for the city and the surrounding region. The Elliot has the only Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in southern New Hampshire.The Elliot at River's Edge opened in 2010, providing urgent care, an ambulatory surgery center and various clinics and physicians' offices, located on Queen City Avenue in Manchester. Manchester is located in southern New Hampshire, 20 miles (32 km) from the Massachusetts border and 58 miles (93 km) from Boston. In 2018, Elliot joined with Southern New Hampshire Health System based in Nashua, New Hampshire, in a combination relationship, creating a new regional health system known as SolutioNHealth.

The Weston Observatory is a historic folly on Oak Hill, the high point of Derryfield Park in Manchester, New Hampshire. Built in 1897, the granite tower is a prominent local landmark, given to the city by James A. Weston, a Manchester native who served twice as governor of New Hampshire. The Manchester School of Technology (MST) is a school located at 100 Gerald Connors Circle, in Manchester, New Hampshire, United States. A part of the Manchester School District, the school is focused on applied applications of programs of study, rather than the theoretical or abstract. The teachers for the programs are all experts in their fields, having worked in the field and bringing their own job experience to their classes. Even the classrooms themselves are designed to function in a manner similar to their real world counterparts. Currently it is its own high school. Until the establishment of the dedicated high school in 2012 it only had part-time 11th and 12th grade students who primarily attended other schools.

Manchester Memorial High School is a four-year comprehensive school in Manchester, New Hampshire, with an enrollment of approximately 1,600. It is a part of the Manchester School District. The school's Latin motto is "scientia est potentia." Manchester Memorial accepts students from Manchester.

Chester College of New England was a bachelor's degree-granting college that provided a foundation in the liberal arts and the fine arts, complemented by majors in the professional arts. It opened in 1965 as White Pines College and closed at the end of the 2011-2012 academic year for financial reasons. Located in Chester, New Hampshire, the college offered degree programs in creative writing, professional writing, photography and media arts, graphic design, computer science, fine arts, communication arts and interdisciplinary arts. Chester College also offered minor programs in creative writing, illustration, photojournalism, and writing. The college featured a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1, artist-in-residence programs, and a program of guest lectures, exhibitions, art and photography exhibits, internships, and relationships with professional associations. In April 2012 the college disclosed an operating deficit. Despite fundraising efforts, in May 2012, the college's board of trustees announced that they had voted to close the college.
