Allexton Wood

St Peter's Church is a historic Anglican church in the village of Allexton, Leicestershire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building, and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. Its most important feature is the Norman north arcade dating from about 1160.

Allexton is a village and civil parish in the Harborough district of Leicestershire, England. According to the 2001 census, the parish had a population of 58. At the 2011 census the population of the village remained less than 100. Details are included in the civil parish of Horninghold. The village's name means 'farm/settlement of Æthellac or Athellak'. The Eye Brook forms the county boundary with Rutland, on the other side of which is Belton-in-Rutland. It is also the boundary between the dioceses of Leicester and Peterborough. The A47 runs east–west between the villages and the Hallaton Road links Allexton with Hallaton. The parish church of St Peter's, Allexton is in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. The parish has been merged with Hallaton as part of the united benefice with the parishes of East Norton, Tugby, Slawston and Horninghold. St Peter's Church was originally built between 1160 and 1180 but there have been several modifications, including the additions of a tower and side aisles, and a major restoration in 1862 by William Millican. Allexton is a farming parish of around 1000 acres with a mixture of arable, grazing and woodland. The grazing is for sheep and horses and there is an equestrian centre at Allexton Hall. Two lakes and woodland surrounding the hall provide fishing and shooting facilities. Until the 1920s almost all the houses and land were part of the Allexton Hall estate. The only old houses are the Old Rectory, Bridge House (formerly the Wilson's Arms) and the Cottage. The current Hall was rebuilt in 1902 but there have been other buildings on the site since Tudor times. In the 13th century the Lord lived in a fortalice (a moated manor house) the remains of which lie buried in a field adjacent to the present hall.

St Botolph's Church, Wardley is a redundant Anglican church in the small village of Wardley, Rutland, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a Grade II* listed building, and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.

Wardley is a village and civil parish in the county of Rutland in the East Midlands of England. The population at the 2001 census was 32. At the 2011 census the population remained less than 100 and is included in the civil parish of Ridlington. It is located about two miles (3 km) west of Uppingham, close to the A47. The village's name probably means 'wood/clearing with a weir' or 'wood/clearing of the watchmen'. The manor is not mentioned in Domesday Book, but was probably among the unnamed berewicks attached to Ridlington. By the early 12th century it was in the hands of Richard Basset, who granted it to Launde Priory in Leicestershire with whom it remained until the Dissolution. St Botolph's parish church is Grade II* listed. In 2016 the church passed into the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. The two-mile (3 km) £1.9 million Wardley Hill Improvement for the A47 opened in October 1987 when the road through the village became a dead end. The village has no mains water supply, instead water is supplied from a borehole. Wardley Wood, owned by the Forestry Commission, is an ancient woodland on a hillside.

Belton-in-Rutland is a village and civil parish in the county of Rutland in the East Midlands of England. The population at the 2001 census was 345 increasing to 348 at the 2011 census. It is situated about six miles (9.6 km) southwest of Oakham and about four miles (6.4 km) west of Uppingham and overlooks the A47. The Eye Brook forms the county boundary with Leicestershire. The village's name probably means 'farm/settlement near a beacon or funeral pyre'. Then again, 'Bel' may likewise address a component signifying 'island' or 'glade'. Belton was renamed Belton-in-Rutland in 1982 to distinguish the village from Belton in Leicestershire. St Peter's Church is a Grade II* listed building. The Old Hall and Westbourne House are also Grade II*. The village has one public house, The Sun Inn. Belton is part of the Braunston & Martinsthorpe ward which elects two councillors to Rutland County Council.

Bolt Wood is near to the western boundary of the Parish of Stockerston, Leicestershire, England. It is suggested that the woodland on this boundary is part of that mentioned in the Domesday Book. Bolt Wood was part of the extensive Royal medieval Leighfield Forest. The first written reference to Bolt Wood is in an undated charter probably dating before the reign of Henry VI, in which it is referred to as 'Boutewood'. An alternative date offered is between 1422 and 1461.

Stockerston Hall is a late-18th-century English country house in Leicestershire, near the town of Uppingham, Rutland. It is a Grade II listed building. The Manor of Stockerston was owned by the Boyville family in the 15th century and passed by marriage to Sothill and then to Drury. It was sold by Henry Drury in 1580 to John Burton of Braunston, whose son was the first of the Burton baronets of Stockerston. In 1633, Sir Thomas Burton Bt was High Sheriff of Leicestershire and in 1682 Sir Thomas Burton Bt had the same honour. The Burtons were impoverished by the English Civil War and sold the estate to Sir Charles Dunscombe in about 1685. The Dunscombes demolished the old manor house in about 1797 and built the present Georgian style mansion upon its foundations in about 1800. The attractive red brick and stone dressed entrance front of five bays has a central Tuscan order porch. The house was sold by Dunscombe in about 1807 and a number of owners and tenants followed including Walker, Bellairs, Fenwicke, Stevenson and from 1930 Whitgreave. By 1954 it was the residence of John A. F. March Phillipps de Lisle, High Sheriff of Leicestershire who was succeeded by his son Everard, also high sheriff in 1974. The house and 269-acre (1.09 km2) estate were sold following the latter's death in 2003.

Eye Brook Valley Woods is a 65.7-hectare (162-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Hallaton in Leicestershire. It is in three separate areas, Great Merrible Wood, which is managed by the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust, Bolt Wood and Park Wood. These are surviving fragments of the medieval Leighfield Forest. Park Wood is mainly ash and wych elm, while Bolt Wood and Great Merrible Wood are dominated by ash and field maple. The shrub flora is diverse, and there are also several small pools and marshes. There is access to Great Merrible Wood by a footpath from Stockerston Lane, but the other woods are private.

Stockerston is a village and civil parish in the Harborough district of Leicestershire, England, located on the border with Rutland, by the Eye Brook. According to the 2001 census the parish had a population of 35. The population remained less than 100 at the 2011 census and is included in the civil parish of Horninghold.

Beaumont Chase is a civil parish in the county of Rutland in the East Midlands of England. It is to the west of Uppingham, north of Stoke Dry, and on a hillside overlooking Leicestershire. Formerly an extra-parochial area, it was created a separate parish in 1858. The civil parish's name means 'Beautiful hill'. 'Chase' is a later addition which means a place for breeding and hunting wild animals. There is only a single occupied building, a farmhouse. According to the 2001 census, Beaumont Chase had a population of zero.

Horninghold is a small village and parish seven miles north-east of Market Harborough in the county of Leicestershire. The population of the civil parish (including Allexton and Stockerston) was 278 at the 2021 census. The village's name means 'wood belonging to the people of Horning'. Following the Norman Conquest in 1066 the village was given to Robert de Todeni, Lord of Belvoir. In about 1076 he gave the parish to Belvoir Priory where it remained until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, the estate owners, the Hardcastle family remodelled the village as a garden village with many trees and shrubs. The church of St Peter is a Grade II* listed building. It was built in the 12th century and is a surviving example of a Church of England parish church without Victorian restoration.
