Brooks, San Antonio

The Edward H. White II Museum of Aerospace Medicine was a museum of the United States Air Force and was located in Hangar 9 at Brooks Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Brooks Air Force Base closed in 2011 under Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) procedures, and the museum closed at the same time.Brooks Field Hangar 9 is located in the Brooks City-Base mixed-use community being developed on the site of the former air base. The development authority has proposed to preserve the historic area around the property.

Hangar 9 is a historic aircraft hangar at Brooks City-Base, the former Brooks Air Force Base, in San Antonio, Texas. Built in 1918, it is the oldest U.S. Air Force aircraft storage and repair facility, and the only surviving hangar from World War I. The building, now rehabilitated as a special event facility, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976.

Brooks Air Force Base was a United States Air Force facility located in San Antonio, Texas, 7 miles (11 km) southeast of Downtown San Antonio. In 2002, Brooks Air Force Base was renamed Brooks City-Base when the property was conveyed to the Brooks Development Authority as part of a unique project between local, state, and federal government. The Brooks Development Authority is now the owner and operator of the property, and is redeveloping it as a science, business, and technology center. The Air Force was the largest tenant at Brooks City-Base.

The South Texas Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases (STCEID) was founded by the University of Texas at San Antonio at the former Brooks Air Force Base site in San Antonio, TX. Intended to become one of the preeminent centers for biodefense research in the nation to provide some assistance to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Bioterrorism is considered by some experts to be one of the greatest current threats to human health and National Security in the aftermath of September 11, 2001 and the anthrax mailings to Congress and news media. Founded by an increase in research funding for bioterrorism defense (biodefense), including development of vaccines, by the NIH and other government organizations. Fields of study at the Center include microbiology, virology, immunology, mycology, and genomics.The major focus of the STCEID is to research emerging infectious diseases (i.e. cholera, SARS, anthrax, AIDS) and their mechanisms of pathogenesis. One of the main research issues is microorganisms that are potentially usable for biological warfare, like cholera, anthrax, ebola, etc.Current Directors of the Center are: Karl Klose, Ph.D. and M. Neal Guentzel, Ph.D.

The University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) is the medical school of the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas. It was opened in 2015 and holds provisional accreditation with the American Osteopathic Association.The school began the inaugural class in summer 2017. Medical graduates of UIW-SOM will receive the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree.

Mission San Juan Capistrano (originally christened in 1716 as La Misión San José de los Nazonis and located in South Central Texas) was founded in 1731 by Spanish Catholics of the Franciscan Order, on the eastern banks of the San Antonio River in present-day San Antonio, Texas. The new settlement (part of a chain of Spanish missions) was named for a 15th-century theologian and warrior priest who resided in the Abruzzo region of Italy. The mission San Juan was named after Saint John of Capestrano.

Acequia Park is located in the city of San Antonio in the U.S. state of Texas. There are picnic tables and restrooms, but alcohol is not allowed in the park. The origins of the park date back to Spanish missionaries, who worked with mission Indians to create a water system sourced by the San Antonio River. The San Antonio Conservation Society (SACS) purchased much of this acreage in 1957 to preserve the area's environment. Because the San Antonio River Authority planned to reconfigure the river channel, SACS joined local land owners in filing a successful water rights and water flow lawsuit against the Authority. In 1975, SACS deeded the property to the City of San Antonio with the stipulation that it be used as a public park.

Mission San Francisco de la Espada (also Mission Espada) is a Roman Rite Catholic mission established in 1690 by Spain and relocated in 1731 to present-day San Antonio, Texas, in what was then known as northern New Spain. The mission was built in order to convert local Native Americans to Christianity and solidify Spanish territorial claims in the New World against encroachment from France. Today, the structure is one of four missions that comprise San Antonio Missions National Historical Park.

Stinson Municipal Airport (IATA: SSF, ICAO: KSSF, FAA LID: SSF) is seven miles south of downtown San Antonio in Bexar County, Texas. The National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015 categorized it as a reliever airport.

Hot Wells is the site of a cultural historical park in San Antonio, Texas. The park complements Texas' only World Heritage Site—the nearby San Antonio Missions National Historical Park—and the Mission Reach of the San Antonio River Walk. The park is located on the east side of the San Antonio River, directly across South Presa Street from the San Antonio State Hospital, along the tracks of the Southern Pacific Railroad and within sight of Mission San José across the river. Prior to the arrival of the Spanish, the land was originally inhabited by Coahuiltecan peoples.

Pecan Valley Golf Club was a golf club in the southern United States, located in San Antonio, Texas. Opened in 1963, the golf course was designed by J. Press Maxwell and was renovated in 1998 by Bob Cupp. It hosted the PGA Championship in 1968, won by 48-year-old Julius Boros for his third major title. Pecan Valley was the site of the Alamo Ladies' Open on the LPGA Tour (1963–1966), the Texas Open Invitational on the PGA Tour (1967–1970), and the U.S. Amateur Public Links in 2001. Pecan Valley ceased operations in January 2012, the first major championship venue closed in the U.S. since Pomonok Country Club in Queens, New York, host of the PGA Championship in 1939, was sold in 1949. It is not known when play will be permitted again; development on a portion of the property began in 2015. Plans are for development of a new nine-hole par-3 course, built to championship golf standards and designed for people with limited mobility and provide specialized equipment.

The 1968 PGA Championship was the 50th PGA Championship played July 18–21 at Pecan Valley Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas. Julius Boros, age 48, won the third of his three major titles, one stroke ahead of runners-up Bob Charles and Arnold Palmer. Boros was the oldest winner of a major championship for over a half century, until Phil Mickelson won in the PGA Championship in 2021 at age fifty. The tournament was played in very hot conditions. Palmer had an 8-foot (2.4 m) putt to tie on the 72nd green, but it missed on the high side of the hole. It was the second of his three runner-up finishes at the only major he never won; he also tied for second in 1964 and 1970. This was the final major before the formation of the Tournament Players Division, later renamed the PGA Tour. The tour pros broke away from the PGA of America in August and formed an independent tour, the American Professional Golfers, Inc. (APG). A compromise was reached in December which brought the tournament players back to the PGA in a separate division with its own policy board and commissioner.In his seventh PGA Championship, Jack Nicklaus missed his first cut in the event by a stroke; five of his six previous finishes were in the top three, with a victory in 1963 in Dallas. He made the next nine cuts at the PGA Championship and won four more times (1971, 1973, 1975, 1980). This PGA Championship was played immediately after the Open Championship in Scotland, the fifth time during the 1960s which the final two majors were played in consecutive weeks. This PGA Championship was also the last held in July (until 2016); it moved to August in 1969 (except 1971 when it was played in February in Florida).
