Büyükçekmece is a district and municipality in the suburbs of Istanbul, Turkey on the Sea of Marmara coast of the European side, west of the city. It is largely an industrial area with a population of 380,000. The mayor is Hasan Akgün (CHP).

The Kanuni Sultan Suleiman bridge (Turkish: Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Köprüsü), also known as Büyükçekmece Bridge, is a stone arch bridge located in Büyükçekmece, 36 km (22 mi) west of the center of Istanbul, Turkey, on the European side of the Bosphorus. The bridge was built during the Ottoman period by chief architect Mimar Sinan (c. 1488/1490–1588), across the mouth of the large but shallow inlet known as Lake Büyükçekmece. Construction started in 1566 and the bridge opened in 1567. During construction it is reported that the water was pumped out of Lake Büyükçekmece, and 40,000 m3 (1,400,000 cu ft) of stones were set in place. The bridge comprises 28 spans and is divided into four sections by the presence of three shallow islets along its length. Its role serving large volumes of traffic as a communications artery has been taken over by a wide modern road bridge on its seaward side, but the sixteenth-century bridge is promoted for its symbolic and historic resonances. Between 1986 and 1989 it was restored at considerable cost.

Büyükçekmece Dam (Turkish: Büyükçekmece Barajı) is a dam on the Lake Büyükçekmece in Büyükçekmece district of Istanbul Province, Turkey. The development was backed by the Turkish State Hydraulic Works (DSİ), and was opened in 1988. Büyükçekmece Dam was built to supply residential water in Istanbul. The construction started in 1983, and the dam was completed in 1988. Water supply from the dam'sreservoir went into service in 1989. It is located in Büyükçekmece district on the European part of Istanbul on the Lake Büyükçekmece, which is formed by disconnecting the stream Sarısu's outflow to the Marmara Sea. It is an earth-fill embarkment dam of 13 m (43 ft) height. The dam's catchment area is 620 km2 (240 sq mi). The reservoir has a capacity of 162 hm3 (5.7×109 cu ft) covering a surface of 43 km2 (17 sq mi) at normal pool. The reservoir water is sanitated before it is supplied to the households. Annual water supply capacity of the dam is 100,000,000 m3 (3.5×109 cu ft).

Museum of World Costumes (Turkish: Dünya Kostümleri Müzesi) is a museum of original folk clothings from various countries. Established in 2011, it is located in Büyükçekmece district ofIstanbul Province. The museum was established in a restored historic building situated at Çarşı St. 4 in the Mimar Sinan neighborhood of Büyükçekmece district in Istanbul Province by the municipality in 2011. The original folk costumes, accessories and some related objects were donated by various foreign folk dance groups, who participated at the "International Culture and Art Festival" held annually in Büyükçekmece, which was four times awarded by the International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts.The museum is open between 8:30 and 17:00 local time except Thursdays and Sundays. Admission is free of charge.

Athyras (Ancient Greek: Ἀθύρας) was a Greek city in ancient Thrace, located in the region of the Propontis. Its site has been located near the modern Turkish city of Büyükçekmece.Under the name Athyra, it is a titular see of both the Eastern Orthodox Church and Roman Catholic Church.

The F3, also known as the Vadistanbul Skyrail (Turkish: Vadistanbul Havaray) and officially referred to as the F3 Vadistanbul-Seyrantepe funicular line (Turkish: F3 Vadistanbul-Seyrantepe füniküler hattı), is a 750 m (2,460 ft) long funicular railway in Sarıyer, Istanbul. The line is one of three funicular railways in Turkey, all of them in Istanbul, and is the only one that operates above ground. Due to the fact that the F3 runs along a concrete viaduct, it has been advertised as a Monorail even though it is technically a funicular railway. The route runs between Vadistanbul and Seyrantepe, where connection to the M2 line is available.The F3 was opened on 29 October 2017.

Vadistanbul is an elevated station and the western terminus of the F3 funicular line of the Istanbul Metro. The station consists of a bay platform with one track inside a Spheroid glass structure within the Vadistanbul Shopping Center. The station is the first and only rapid transit station in Turkey to be directly connected to a privately owned structure. Trains operate to Seyrantepe in seven minute intervals daily between 8:00 and 22:00. Vadistanbul station connects to the 2nd floor of the Vadistanbul shopping center near the food court and was opened on 29 October 2017.

Esenler is a rapid transit station on the M1B line of the Istanbul Metro. The station is the on the M1B branch of the M1 line and is the first stop west of where the M1B splits from the M1A. The station is adjacent to the Esenler maintenance facility which was originally built in 1989. Plans to bring passenger service to Esenler existed since the mid-2000s when the station was built, but the municipality wasn't able to see the plans through. Esenler station was opened to the public on 22 February 2012, as part of the new M1B branch that would extend to Kirazlı and connect with the M3. The station design is unique as one platform is higher than the other and is in-between both tracks, despite being a side platform. This is so that the westbound track can pass over the tracks from the adjacent maintenance facility.

Endem TV Tower is a TV tower in Büyükçekmece, Istanbul, Turkey. It was built between 1998 and 2008, and has a now-closed revolving restaurant 154 m (505 ft) above ground, as well as an observation deck at 160 m (520 ft). The total height of the tower is 257 m (843 ft) including the antenna.

On 10 March 2017, a Sikorsky S-76C++ helicopter on a private charter flight crashed in Istanbul, Turkey, killing all 7 people on board.

Lake Büyükçekmece (Turkish: Büyükçekmece Gölü) is a liman formed at the point where the river Karasudere flows into the Marmara Sea. The lake is located south of the Çatalca district, west of Istanbul, Turkey. It is used as a freshwater reservoir. The lake's bar was reinforced in 1988 by a dam. The area of the lake is 28.47 km2 (10.99 sq mi), and is 7 km (4.3 mi) long and 2 km (1.2 mi) wide. The maximum depth is 8.6 m (28 ft), following deepening carried out by the State Hydraulic Works.The fluvial lake developed as the flow of Karasudere, and as it came downwards from Çatalca it was blocked off and formed by the resulting sandbank it created. A reedy, brackish salt-water lake exists between the Büyükçekmece Dam and the Marmara Sea. Another lagoon, Lake Küçükçekmece, is located around 12 km (7.5 mi) east of Lake Büyükçekmece. The number of fish species observed in the lake has decreased from 30 in the past to 15 currently.A historic 635 m (2,083 ft) long and 7.17 m (23.5 ft) wide multiple arch bridge, named after the Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan (1489-1588), spans the narrow opening at the bar connecting the lake to the sea.At the northern shore of the lake, Istanbul Hezarfen Airfield is situated on a peninsula.
