The Pleasant Lawn School Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located northeast of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. At the time of its nomination it consisted of three resources, all of which are contributing buildings. This is the only intact example of a consolidated rural school district in Iowa. It consists of a two-story brick school building (1917), a two-story frame teacherage (1917), and a hack barn. A gymnasium was added to the school building in 1941. The school was still in existence when the buildings were added to the National Register. Consolidated schools in rural areas were an attempt to increase the tax base and to improve the educational opportunities that were offered by these small public schools. There were about 47 such districts in the state by 1920, and by 1930 there were 89 rural districts. This school was a combination of four school districts: School No. 4 in Marion Township, and Ebenezer, Wesley, and Everett Schools in Canaan Township. Voters approved the consolidation in 1916. While several of these schools were centered around small towns, many were like this one that was located far enough away from town that it was difficult for teachers to get to the schools. A teacherage was built to house them at the school. Students were brought to school in a horse-drawn hack. The barn was used to house the horses during the school day.

Mount Pleasant station is an Amtrak intercity train station in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, United States. The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad built the pressed brick depot in 1912. The contractors were Whitney & Bergdahl (J. Louis Whitney and K.A. Bergdahl), who were prominent Mt. Pleasant builders at that time. Using funds received under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, Amtrak installed a new wheelchair lift and enclosure at the station in 2010.The Mount Pleasant station has a waiting area and lobby open to the public 365 days a year. The ticket office is staffed for ticket sales and baggage service Monday-Friday excluding holidays or when the agent is out sick or on vacation. Checked baggage service is available at the ticket counter Monday-Friday and trainside with the conductor on weekends.

Old Main (Iowa Wesleyan University)

Old Main is an historic building located on the Iowa Wesleyan University campus in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, United States. Built in 1854, when James Harlan was the college's president, it is the second building constructed on the campus after Pioneer Hall. It is believed that Old Main was the first genuine collegiate building built in Iowa. The bricks for the building were manufactured locally by Benjamin Franklin Pearson of Keosauqua, Iowa, who also was responsible for some of the building's construction. The three-story building has modified classical features. It was designed to have classrooms on the first two floors and the library, natural history museum and chapel on the third floor. The building is capped with a hip roof with bracketed eaves, and a wooden cupola with a low dome painted gold. The International P.E.O. Sisterhood was founded in the building. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Iowa Wesleyan University is a private college in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. It is Iowa's first co-educational institution of higher learning and the oldest of its type west of the Mississippi River. The institution is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.it was founded as the Mount Pleasant Literary Institute in 1842, and was known as Mount Pleasant Collegiate Institute from 1843 to 1855, Iowa Wesleyan University from 1855 to 1912, and Iowa Wesleyan College from 1912 to 2015. The name reverted to Iowa Wesleyan University in 2015. Two campus buildings Old Main and the Harlan-Lincoln House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The latter, the former summer home of Robert Todd Lincoln, is now a museum featuring various artifacts from the Harlan and Lincoln families.

The Mount Pleasant Correctional Facility (MPCF) is an Iowa Department of Corrections correctional institution located in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, United States. As of 30 July 2010, the institution has 891 inmates and another 44 in segregation in a 775-inmate facility, and 100 additional female inmates in a separate unit. The facility has about 340 staff members. The MPCF primarily houses inmates with treatable personality disorders and substance abuse problems. The facility specializes in treating sex offenders and those having substance abuse problems. The facility also works to help inmates transition to life on the outside. The correctional facility is located on the same campus as the Mount Pleasant Mental Health Institute.
