East Orland, Maine

The Dead River is a 1.8-mile-long (2.9 km) arm of Alamoosook Lake in the town of Orland in Hancock County, Maine. Via Alamoosook Lake, the Narramissic River, and the Orland River, it is part of the Penobscot River watershed. It is formed by the junction of Moosehorn Stream and Hothole Stream and extends south to the main body of Alamoosook Lake.

The Narramissic begins at the outlet of Alamoosook Lake and flows west and southwest. It turns south at Duck Cove, just upstream of the village of Orland, where, near the end of Fish Point, at Lower Falls or "Orland" Dam, its overflow joins the tidal Orland River .

The Duck Cove School is a historic former school building at 429 Maine State Route 46 (south of junction with Duck Cove Road) in Bucksport, Maine. Built in 1895, this wood frame one-room schoolhouse served as a school until 1943, and been owned by a local community organization since. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

Toddy Pond is a narrow lake, eight-miles long, in Hancock County, Maine. South Toddy leads from Surry and Blue Hill townships via a narrow channel to Middle Toddy that is edged by Surry and Penobscot townships. All of North Toddy, which is connected to Middle Toddy by another narrow channel, lies in Orland township. U.S. Route One crosses the northern end of the lake, paralleling the dam through which the waters of Toddy Pond flow down to Alamoosook Lake and thence eventually to the Penobscot River. A public boat landing is located off Route One. The cold water of North Toddy is home to a self-sustaining population of lake trout; it is also stocked with splake, brown trout, and land-locked Atlantic salmon. Smallmouth bass and white perch thrive in the warmer water of Middle and South Toddy. In spring the lake is a spawning venue for alewife. The Toddy Pond Association was established in 1999 by concerned property owners in order to protect the lake and its watershed and educate members about relevant environmental issues.

The Jed Prouty Tavern and Inn is an historic building at 57 Main Street in downtown Bucksport, Hancock County, Maine. It was built around 1780 as a two family home and was converted into a tavern and inn around 1820. In this guise it hosted prominent national figures, including Daniel Webster and Presidents Martin Van Buren and William Henry Harrison. After standing largely vacant in the later 20th century, the building was converted an assisted living facility, and presently serves as a community senior center. it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
