Short Wood and Southwick Wood

Southwick (pronounced "Suth-ick") is a small village and civil parish in Northamptonshire, England. It is approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) north of the town of Oundle and is set in a valley of the River Nene. The village lies in the North Northamptonshire. Before local government changes in 2021 it fell within the non-metropolitan district of East Northamptonshire, which lay within the East Midlands region. At the time of the 2001 census, the parish's population was 180 people, increasing marginally to 181 at the 2011 Census.

Glapthorn is a village and civil parish in North Northamptonshire, England. At the time of the 2001 census, the parish's population was 264 people, increasing to 271 at the 2011 Census. The villages name origin is uncertain. 'Glappa's thorn-tree' or 'glaep-thorn' an otherwise obscure plant name. Glapthorn is approximately 1+1⁄2 miles NNW of Oundle, the closest town. North of the village is a small wood, Short Wood, with a Saxon earthwork. After suffering from widespread "Dutch Elm Disease" tree infection in the 1970s, the woodland is recovering its attraction and is allure known for its May-time display of bluebell-carpeted open coppice. Many other species inhabit the woodland, resulting in its classification as an SSSI. It is publicly accessible as a nature reserve. Glapthorn's church of St Leonard's mostly dates back to the 13th century with the porch and south doorway added in the 14th century. The altar rail and panels in the pulpit were installed during the reign of James I. Other noteworthy items are a Victorian bier, an original pew located at the back of the church, three bells (one of which dates to the 14th century by John Sleyt), and an organ. The church retains traces of medieval paintings of what is believed to be St. Christopher.

Glapthorn Cow Pasture is a 28.2-hectare (70-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north-west of Oundle in Northamptonshire. It is managed by the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire. This site has ash and maple woodland, and dense blackthorn scrub. It is described by Natural England as one of the most important sites in Britain for the black hairstreak butterfly, which requires a habitat of prunus species such as blackthorn. The scrub also provides nesting sites for nightingales. There is an entrance to the site at the south-east corner.

Oundle and Thrapston was a rural district in Northamptonshire, England from 1935 to 1974. It was formed in 1935 under the County Review Order as a merger of the Easton on the Hill Rural District, the Gretton Rural District, and the parts of the Oundle Rural District and the Thrapston Rural District which were in Northamptonshire. It was abolished in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972 and now forms part of the North Northamptonshire Unitary Authority.

Apethorpe Palace, formerly known as "Apethorpe Hall", is a Grade I listed country house, dating to the 15th century, close to Apethorpe, Northamptonshire. It was a "favourite royal residence" for James I. After restoration by English Heritage the house was sold in 2015 to Jean Christophe Iseux von Pfetten as his "private residence", under an arrangement where it is "open during July and August for pre-booked tours only", these managed by English Heritage. The house is acknowledged as one of the finest remaining examples of a Jacobean stately home and one of Britain's ten best palaces. It holds a particular importance due to its ownership by, and role in entertaining, Tudor and Stuart monarchs; Elizabeth I inherited the estate from her father Henry VIII and her successor, James I, personally contributed to its 1622 extension, housing the state rooms and featuring some of the most important surviving plasterwork and fireplaces of the period. There were at least thirteen extended royal visits – more than to any other house in the county – between 1566 and 1636, and it was at Apethorpe, in August 1614, that King James met his favourite and speculated lover, George Villiers, later to become Duke of Buckingham. A series of court masques written by Ben Jonson for James I were performed while the King was in residence at Apethorpe. The house was also lived in regularly by Charles I.

Woodnewton is a village in Northamptonshire, England. Essentially a pair of parallel streets, the village lies to the north of a small stream, the Willow Brook, in Rockingham Forest. It is in North Northamptonshire. At the time of the 2001 census, the parish's population was 442 people, increasing slightly to 450 at the 2011 Census. The village's name means 'New farm/settlement'. The village is situated in the Forest of Cliffe, so 'wood' was added to signify that. Woodnewton is home to 'Clownfest', a fundraising operation inspired by Coco the Clown. There is a woodcarved statue of 'Coco the clown' in the Woodnewton village park. Coco the clown is buried in the graveyard of St Mary's parish church, which is situated to the western end of the village. Clownfest raised enough money to pay for the building of the current village hall, which is a central hub for the village. Other facilities include: Public House, Village hall, Church and a Pottery.

Apethorpe is a village, civil parish, former manor and ecclesiastical parish in Northamptonshire, England (in the North Northamptonshire district), situated 11 miles west of the City of Peterborough. The 2001 census records a population of 130, increasing to 160 at the 2011 census. The manor of Apethorpe is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Patorp and has had various spellings over the past millennium, including Apetorp, Appetorp, Apthorp, Appethorpe and Apthorpe. The village's name means 'Api's outlying farm/settlement'. The village is compact, uniform and centred on Main Street. In the late 15th century the manor of Apethorpe was acquired by Sir Guy Wolston, an officer in the household of King Edward IV, who began the construction of the surviving Apethorpe Palace.

St Leonard's Church is an Anglican church in the village of Apethorpe in Northamptonshire, England. It is an active parish church in the Diocese of Peterborough. It has been designated a Grade I listed building by English Heritage.

Lower Benefield is a village on the A427 road in North Northamptonshire, England, near Oundle. It is part of the civil parish of Benefield. The villages name means 'Open land of Bera's people'.St Mary's Church is part of the Benefice of Benefield, Glapthorn and Oundle St Peter's. It is in the Rural Deanery of Oundle and is part of the Archdeaconry of Oakham within the Diocese of Peterborough. The church is a Grade II* listed building. It has Medieval origins but was largely rebuilt c.1847 by John Macduff Derick for the Watts-Russell family of Biggin Hall, about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) west of Benefield, and restored in 1897 and 1901. Only the chancel of the old church was retained, dating from the 14th-century.

The Nene Way is a waymarked long-distance footpath in England, running through the English counties of Northamptonshire, Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire. It generally follows the course of the River Nene.

Oundle railway station is a Grade II listed former railway station in Oundle, Northamptonshire on the former Northampton and Peterborough Railway line which connected Peterborough and Northampton. In 1846 the line, along with the London and Birmingham, became part of the London and North Western Railway. At grouping in 1923 it became part of the London Midland and Scottish Railway.
