Miami

Spring Garden is a neighborhood of Miami, Florida, United States. The section of the city is one of the oldest purpose-built single-family residential neighborhoods in Miami and in the Greater Miami area. It is bound by the Dolphin Expressway (SR 836) to the north, the Seybold Canal (formerly Wagner Creek and Northwest Eighth Street Road to the east, by the Miami River to the southwest, and West 12th Avenue (SR 933) to the west.

Wagner Creek is a tributary of the Miami River in Miami, Florida, that drains out of the Biscayne Aquifer in what used to be the Allapatah prairie and runs through the city of Miami neighborhoods of Allapatah, Spring Garden and Overtown.

The Atlantic Gas Station (also known as the Valiant Auto Body Shop) is a historic site in Miami, Florida located at 668 Northwest 5th Street. On December 29, 1988, it was added to the United States National Register of Historic Places. It was a gas station of the Atlantic Refining Company.

The Miami Nice Jazz Festival is a jazz festival in Miami, Florida. It is a continuation of the festival which started in 1948 in Nice, France, which took place in the Opéra de Nice. This venue was one of the early theaters to broadcast over the radio. The Nice Jazz festival received its popularity from musicians such as Louis Armstrong.The festival was next held 23 years later in 1971 with Ella Fitzgerald, Helen Humes, Pharoah Sanders, T-Bone Walker, Stéphane Grappelli, Django Reinhardt, Herbie Hancock, Oscar Peterson, Roy Eldridge, John Lewis, Al Grey, Percy Heath, Connie Key, Dizzy Gillespie, NHØP, Daniel Humair, Sonny Stitt, Cannonball Adderley, the Modern Jazz Quartet, Charlie Mingus, Max Roach, and Miles Davis. Since 1971, it has been an annual event. Since 2011, the festival has been run by Christian Estrosi, mayor of Nice.

Culmer station is a station on the Metrorail rapid transit system just northeast of the Spring Garden neighborhood of Miami, Florida, near the Midtown Interchange. This station is located at the intersection of Northwest 11th Street and Seventh Avenue (US 441), opening to service December 17, 1984. The station is named after Father John Culmer, a local civil rights leader who labored tirelessly to improve the living conditions of black Miamians.

Sports Leadership and Management Charter School (SLAM) is a public charter school for intermediate and secondary grade levels in Little Havana, Miami, Florida. There are two other SLAM campuses: By 2015 the Henderson, Nevada campus opened, and in 2016 the West Palm Beach, Florida campus opened.The rapper Pitbull founded SLAM, which opened in 2013. He chose to focus the school on vocational studies to attract students who were uninterested in academic subjects. He formed a partnership between the school and the Miami Marlins.

Young Women's Preparatory Academy (YWPA) is a grade 6-12 magnet school for girls, located in the Little Havana neighborhood of Miami, Florida, United States. It is a part of Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS). YWPA was the first public school established in South Florida that was only for girls.The school was established in 2006, with a focus on mathematics, science, and technology. It had about 400 students as of 2012, and as of 2014 had about the same number.As of 2015 Concepción I. Martinez is the principal.

The Wagner Homestead was built c. 1855 by William Wagner, who came to Miami with his Creole wife Everline. Wagner, a U.S. Army veteran, had joined the army in 1846, fought in the Mexican War under General Winfield Scott until he was wounded in the Battle of Cerro Gordo, and sent to Charleston S.C. to recuperate. When Wagner's former military unit was sent to reopen Fort Dallas in 1855, he came to the Miami area and decided to move to South Florida. Wagner died in 1901 on his homestead. He was one of the area's first permanent residents and was actively involved in local political and community affairs. The Wagner house was originally located along a tributary of the Miami River which was later renamed Wagner Creek. In 1979 the Dade Heritage Trust moved the house from its original location near Culmer Metrorail Station to Lummus Park in downtown Miami. The Wagner home reflects the early days of settlement along the Miami River during the nineteenth century and is the only known house in Miami which remains from this period. It is a rare example of vernacular wood frame architecture and is unique in its use of Balloon frame construction.The home is located in Lummus Park on the north side of the Miami River at NW 4th Avenue and NW 3rd Street. It is the oldest known home still standing in Miami.

Little Havana (Spanish: Pequeña Habana) is a neighborhood of Miami, Florida, United States. Home to many Cuban exiles, as well as many immigrants from Central and South America, Little Havana is named after Havana, the capital and largest city in Cuba. Little Havana is noted as a center of social, cultural, and political activity in Miami. Its festivals, including the Calle Ocho Festival, Viernes Culturales/Cultural Fridays, the Three Kings Parade and others, have been televised to millions of people every year on different continents. It is also known for its landmarks, including Calle Ocho (SW 8th Street/Tamiami Trail), and its Walk of Fame (for famous artists and Latin personalities, including Celia Cruz, Willy Chirino, and Gloria Estefan), the Cuban Memorial Boulevard, Plaza de la Cubanidad, Domino Park, the Tower Theater, José Martí Park, the Firestone/Walgreens Building, St. John Bosco Catholic Church, Municipio de Santiago de Cuba and others. Little Havana is the best known Cuban exile neighborhood in the world. It is characterized by its street life, restaurants, music and other cultural activities, small business enterprises, political passion, and great warmth among its residents.In 2015, Little Havana was included in the National Trust for Historic Preservation's annual list of 11 Most Endangered Places. In 2017, the Trust declared it a national treasure.

The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis is a spinal cord injury research center and a designated Center of Excellence at the University of Miami's Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine in Miami, Florida. The Miami Project was co-founded in 1985 by Barth A. Green and Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Nick Buoniconti after Buoniconti's son, Marc, sustained a spinal cord injury during a college football game. The Miami Project's international team is housed in the Lois Pope LIFE Center and includes more than 250 scientists, researchers and clinicians.
