Cranford St John SSSI

Cranford railway station served the civil parish of Cranford, Northamptonshire, England, from 1866 to 1961 on the Kettering, Thrapston and Huntingdon Railway.

Cranford St John is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Cranford, in the North Northamptonshire district, in the ceremonial county of Northamptonshire, England. It is in the southern half of the parish of Cranford, next to Cranford St Andrew - both named after the two parish churches. The two settlements are divided by the Alledge Brook, a tributary of the River Nene; the derivation of the name is "ford frequented by cranes or herons". In 1931 the parish had a population of 239. On 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished to form "Cranford".The only public house left is the Red Lion in Cranford St John. The old station house is the station building of the Kettering to Cambridge standard gauge railway that used to run along the side of the village. The Church was largely built in the thirteenth century, including the tower, but there is an early Norman archway in the north arcade, possibly moved from the original tower, and the rest of the arcade is late twelfth century. The south aisle was built in 1842.The former Sunday school has been converted into a residential property.

It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building, and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. The church stands in the park of Cranford Hall, to the southwest of the house.

Burton Wold Wind Farm is a wind farm located near Burton Latimer in the English county of Northamptonshire, UK. The farm was developed by Your Energy Ltd, is owned by Mistral Windfarms and operated by Engineering Renewables Ltd. E.ON UK is buying the electricity output of the project under a long-term power purchase agreement. The farm is spread over three hectares. It has an installed capacity of 20 MW and generate on average around 40,000,000 units (kilowatt hours) of electricity annually.Burton Wold was the first wind farm to be erected in Northamptonshire. Construction work on the site began in December 2005, and the wind farm became operational in May 2006. The wind farm received a mention in the 2008 Civic Trust Awards and was shortlisted in the MKSM Excellence Awards in 2009.

Twywell Gullet is a 17.1-hectare (42-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest east of Kettering in Northamptonshire. It is part of the 54.6 hectare Twywell Hills and Dales nature reserve, which is managed by a partnership of the Woodland Trust and the Rockingham Forest Trust. The site is in turn a small part of the former royal hunting Rockingham Forest.Twywell Gullet is a former ironstone quarry which has deep cuttings with steeply sloping banks. It has species-rich limestone grassland on the slopes and ponds and scrub in the bottoms. There are a number of uncommon ground nesting bees and wasps, and beetles include the nationally rare ruddy darter. There is a large pond which has a large reedbed and many great crested newts. Footpaths go through the site but there is no access to some steeply sloping areas.

Burton Latimer Hall is an Elizabethan manor house in the village of Burton Latimer, Northamptonshire. It is a Grade I listed building.The Hall, probably of medieval origin, was remodelled and enlarged in the early 17th century. The west front dates from the mid-18th century and the south wing from 1872. It is built of coursed limestone rubble with an ashlar west front and a Collyweston stone slate roof. In plan it consists of a main block with two cross-wings and an additional wing to the south. The manor of Burton Latimer, one of two Burton manors, belonged in earlier times to the Latimer family. After passing into the hands of the Bacon family the 17th-century refurbishment was carried out by Edmund Bacon c.1620. The Lordship was eventually bought in 1760 by John Harpur, who soon afterwards combined it with the other Burton manor. The Hall and its surrounding estate have belonged to the Harpur family ever since. In the grounds stand a Grade II* listed dovecote and a Grade II listed stable block.

In 1086 when the Domesday Book was completed, Finedon (then known as Tingdene) was a large royal manor, previously held by Queen Edith, wife of Edward the Confessor. From the 1860s the parish was much excavated for its iron ore, which lay underneath a layer of limestone and was quarried over the course of 100 years or more. Local furnaces produced pig iron and later the quarries supplied ore for the steel works at Corby. A disused quarry face in the south of the parish is a geological SSSI. Finedon is situated 4 miles (6.4 km) to the north east of Wellingborough. Nearby towns and villages include Irthlingborough, Burton Latimer and Great Harrowden.
