Charles Rice, a cook, moved in by 1917 and lived here until at least 1926.

The walls of the structure are clad with asbestos shingles. The attached residence is a two-story gabled structure with a front porch running the full width of the house.The structure was built for the grocery business of Robert Shafer, who operated here in the late 19th century. By the 1930s, a used furniture business operated by Jennie Cross was located here.

The walls are clad with clapboards, and the windows are topped by a simple cornice.The house is associated with Bert and John Hobbins, who lived here in the late 1890s, along with John's wife. Bert Hobbins was a clerk at Wellington & Co., and John was a clerk at Milor & Co. By 1903, Jesse Marvin, a sawyer, was living in this house. By 1928, William Behm was the owner.

The porch has four Doric piers. The main section of the house is rectangular, with a side bay and an octagonal porch bay extending out of the main footprint. Wooden brackets support the gables.The John Nyman House was constructed around the turn of the century. The Nymans lived in the house for several decades.

Both porches have turned decorative elements. The windows have a single pane on the bottom, with multi-light units above.The house was built some time before 1899. It is associated with I.N. Debenham, a carpenter who lived here around the turn of the century, and Benjamin Snatts, an inspector for the Michigan Telephone Company, who lived here after 1903.

The windows have multiple vertical panes with a single-pane light on top.The George McManus House was constructed c. 1910 for Geaorge McManus, the President of the Petoskey Garage and Sales Company, and of W.L. McManus Lumber Company. The house marries the basic Colonial Revival design with elements from the Prairie School.

A low retaining wall surrounds the two structures.The George Schantz Residence and Store is a well-preserved example in Petoskey of a residence and attached store, fitting into the local tradition of small commercial establishments located in residential neighborhoods. The building was owned in the 1920s and later by George Schantz.

Jacob VanZolenburg lived in the house by 1903. By 1917, the house was owned by Cook Bockes, proprietor of Cook Electric Company. Irma Horton, a musician, boarded with the Bockes family.
