It has an L-shaped plan, with the short, gable-roofed section of the L facing the front. A single story wing projects to the rear. A single story hipped roof porch with Doric columns fills the angle between the legs of the L. The windows are one-over-one double hung units.The Stout family lived in this house until some time after 1903, along with their boarder, Anna Vaughn. By 1917, Joseph Jordan, a carpenter. owned the house, with Anna Vaughn continuing as a boarder. By 1928, John L. Smith owned the house.

The windows have vertical panes set above a single light.The house was built some time before 1899. It is significant because of its association with Gerhard Fochtman, the owner of Fochtman's Livery Barn around the turn of the century. The Fochtman family was a locally prominent family of merchants in Petoskey.

It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.The Zipp Lumber Company Building is a three-story brick Queen Anne commercial structure built on a trapezoidal plan, with pedimented dormers and a hipped roof. The trapezoidal plan accommodates the irregular lot adjacent to the railroad tracks. The walls are paneled to simulate pilasters. Windows are one-over-one wood framed units.The building was first occupied by the Petoskey Grocery Company, which was incorporated in 1900. In 1917, the George T. Zipp Lumber Company moved into the building. Zipp Lumber occupied the building for many years. After they vacated the building, it was refurbished into the Emmet County Professional Office Building.

Phillip's wife Jane ran a rooming house here for many years.

It is associated with Meyer Fryman, who owned a shoe business.
