Petoskey Downtown Historic District

Petoskey ( pə-TAHS-kee) is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is the county seat of Emmet County, and is the largest settlement within the county. Petoskey has a population of 5,877 at the 2020 census, up from 5,670 at the 2010 census. Petoskey is part of Northern Michigan, and is one of the northernmost cities in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Petoskey is located on the southern shore of Little Traverse Bay, a bay of Lake Michigan. Petoskey sits directly across the bay from Harbor Springs, another Emmet County city. Petoskey is a popular Midwestern resort town.Petoskey lends its name to the Petoskey stone, a fossilized coral that is the state stone of Michigan.

The Meyer Fryman House is a private house located at 211 Michigan Street in Petoskey, Michigan. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The house is unusual in Petoskey, in that it is constructed of concrete blocks.The Meyer Fryman House is 1+1⁄2-story font-gable bungalow constructed of concrete blocks. It has a gabled front porch, and a single-story wing extends to the rear. The eaves are exposed on the sides of the house, and the windows have multi-paned units over single lights.The house was constructed in the early 20th century, possibly as early as 1902. It is associated with Meyer Fryman, who owned a shoe business.

The Petoskey Public Works Utility Building, is a utility building located at 106 West Lake Street in Petoskey, Michigan. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.The Petoskey Public Works Utility Building is a two-story concrete Moderne structure with metal-framed windows. A single-story addition extends to one side at the rear of the building. The entry bay protrudes forward. The exterior walls are grooved, referencing the fluting seen in classical piers.The Petoskey Public Works Utility Building was constructed in 1937, replacing another facility that had stood on the site for many years. The building is part of a long-time commitment by the city to generate electrical power for the community.

The Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Station is a railway depot located in Pioneer Park on West Lake Street in Petoskey, Michigan. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. The building now houses the Little Traverse Historical Museum.

The Petoskey Grocery Company Building, also known as the George T. Zipp Lumber Company Building, is a commercial building located at 616 Petoskey Street in Petoskey, Michigan. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.The Zipp Lumber Company Building is a three-story brick Queen Anne commercial structure built on a trapezoidal plan, with pedimented dormers and a hipped roof. The trapezoidal plan accommodates the irregular lot adjacent to the railroad tracks. The walls are paneled to simulate pilasters. Windows are one-over-one wood framed units.The building was first occupied by the Petoskey Grocery Company, which was incorporated in 1900. In 1917, the George T. Zipp Lumber Company moved into the building. Zipp Lumber occupied the building for many years. After they vacated the building, it was refurbished into the Emmet County Professional Office Building.

New Life Anglican Church is an Anglican parish located in a historic church building at 219 State Street in Petoskey, Michigan. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 under the name Trinity Evangelical Church.

The Jacob VanZolenburg House is a private house located at 209 State Street in Petoskey, Michigan. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.The Jacob VanZolenburg House is a 2+1⁄2-story front-gable Queen Anne structure. A single-story wing extends to the rear. The first floor is clad in clapboard, and the second story is clad with decorative shingling. A porch wraps around one side, and a bay window projects under the front gable. Smaller side gables, formed to mimic a gambrel shape, intersect the main roof toward the rear.The Jacob VanZolenburg House was constructed some time before 1899. Jacob VanZolenburg lived in the house by 1903. By 1917, the house was owned by Cook Bockes, proprietor of Cook Electric Company. Irma Horton, a musician, boarded with the Bockes family.

The George McManus House is a private house located at 121 State Street in Petoskey, Michigan. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.The George McManus House is a 2+1⁄2-story Colonial Revival house with a hipped roof and a single-story addition in the rear. Each side of the roof has gabled dormers containing Palladian window units. The building is sheathed in clapboard, and has corner pilasters and a cornice on top. The front facade has an entry porch with Ionic columns. The windows have multiple vertical panes with a single-pane light on top.The George McManus House was constructed c. 1910 for Geaorge McManus, the President of the Petoskey Garage and Sales Company, and of W.L. McManus Lumber Company. The house marries the basic Colonial Revival design with elements from the Prairie School.

Mineral Well Park is a park located on the east side of the Bear River at West Lake Street in Petoskey, Michigan. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

The Frank Schapler House is a private house located at 106 East Lake Street in Petoskey, Michigan. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.The Frank Schapler House is an unusual example in Petoskey of a bungalow with Prairie School and Period architectural influences. It is a hip-roof bungalow constructed of blond brick. It has hip-roof entrance porch, supported by pier arches, positioned asymmetrically in the front. The house has "Chicago style" windows, with a broad central unit flanked by narrower windows.The Frank Schapler House was likely constructed in the 1920s.

The West Mitchell Street Bridge is a bridge carrying West Mitchell Street and US Highway 31 (US 31) over the Bear River in Petoskey, Michigan. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
