Christian Center, Missouri

Christian County is located in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2020 census, its population was 88,842. Its county seat is Ozark. The county was organized in 1859 and is named after Christian County, Kentucky, which in turn is named for William Christian, a Kentucky soldier of the American Revolutionary War. Christian County is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Between 2000 and 2010, it was the fastest-growing county in the state and one of the fastest growing ones in the nation as the county became more suburban due to the booming growth in Springfield.

The central feature of the district, the Christian County Courthouse, is a three-story, Classical Revival style brick building designed by architect Henry H. Hohenschild. Other notable buildings include the Bank of Ozark/Masonic Lodge (1897), First Baptist Church (1919), Methodist Episcopal Church (1914), Robertson Brothers’ Store (1882), Ozark Drug (1905), Works Progress Administration Community Building (1934), Hospital (c. 1945), and Christian County Bank (c. 1886, 1910 façade).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

Parched Corn Creek or Parched Corn Hollow is a stream valley in Christian and Greene counties in the Ozarks of southwest Missouri. It is a tributary of Finley Creek. The stream headwaters in southeastern Greene County are at 37°05′41″N 93°06′39″W and the confluence with Finley Creek in Ozark County is at 37°02′29″N 93°10′28″W. The source area for the stream is in the southeast corner of Greene County and it flows to the southwest into Christian County and crosses under Missouri Route 125. It continues on southwest to join the Finley about halfway between Linden and Ozark.According to oral etymology, Parched Corn Creek was so named as it was typically as dry as parched corn.
