Marshbrook railway station

Marshbrook is a hamlet in Shropshire, England. It is sometimes spelt "Marsh Brook", which is also the name of a small watercourse which flows through the area. It lies on the junction of the A49 and B4370, 3 miles to the south of the market town of Church Stretton. Three civil parishes come together in the hamlet: Church Stretton, Wistanstow and Acton Scott. The hamlet lies at 163m above sea level at the southern end of the Stretton Gap. A Roman road passed through what is now Marshbrook, on its way from Leintwardine to Wroxeter. The Welsh Marches Line runs through the hamlet and there was once a small station here. Marshbrook station was constructed in 1852 for the railway company comprising a stationmaster's house, waiting room and ticket office. The station was closed in 1958 and the building was subsequently used as a private house, before it was demolished in 2019. A signal box and level crossing remain. Marshbrook Signal Box is the oldest operational signal box of its type surviving on the national railway network and was built by the London & North Western Railway in 1872. It was made a Grade II listed building in 2013, in order to save it from the planned removal of mechanical signalling on the line. There is also a public house in the hamlet, near to the railway line, called The Station Inn (previously known as the "Wayside Inn"). A small industrial estate/business park exists on land adjacent to the railway and there are roadside businesses at the A49/B4370 junction. In 2010 a camping and outdoor activities centre opened at Marshbrook, with mountain bikes available for hire. One mile to the northwest is the hamlet of Minton and one mile to the east is the village of Acton Scott. The hamlets of Whittingslow and Cwm Head lie to the southwest along the B4370.

South Shropshire was a local government district in Shropshire, England, from 1974 to 2009. Its council was based in the town of Ludlow; the other towns in the district were Church Stretton, Cleobury Mortimer, Clun, Bishop's Castle and Craven Arms. South Shropshire was the most rural district of one of the UK's most rural counties, the population of the district was 40,410 in 2001 spread out over 1,027 km2 of forest, mountains, moorlands, hills and mixed quality farmland. It bordered the unitary authority of Powys in Wales, which it closely resembled, economically, socially, culturally and historically. 65% of the district's area is part of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The district was created on 1 April 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972, by the merger of the rural districts of Clun and Bishop's Castle and Ludlow. The district and its council were abolished on 1 April 2009 when the new Shropshire unitary authority was established, as part of the 2009 structural changes to local government in England.

The Shropshire Hills National Landscape is a designated National Landscape in Shropshire, England. It is located in the south of the county, extending to its border with Wales. Designated in 1958, the area encompasses 802 square kilometres (310 sq mi) of land primarily in south-west Shropshire, taking its name from the upland region of the Shropshire Hills. The A49 road and Welsh Marches Railway Line bisect the area north–south, passing through or near Shrewsbury, Church Stretton, Craven Arms and Ludlow.

Marsh Farm Junction was a railway junction in Shropshire where the GWR's line from Buildwas via Much Wenlock joined the LNWR/GWR joint line between Shrewsbury and Hereford. Opened by the Wenlock, Craven Arms and Lightmoor Extension railway in 1867, the Buildwas branch line was subsequently taken over by the GWR and became part of the Wellington to Craven Arms Railway. Passenger trains ceased on the Wenlock branch in 1951 and it closed completely a few years later. The main Welsh Marches Line remains open and is a busy passenger and freight route.

Whittingslow is a hamlet in Shropshire, England. It is located in the parish of Wistanstow, just off the B4370 road, between Marshbrook and Cwm Head. The hamlet lies on a hilltop, at 252m above sea level. The lane from the B4370 continues, along a ridge of hills, to the hamlet of Woolston in the southwest and then on to the village of Wistanstow itself.

Little Stretton is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Church Stretton, in the Shropshire district, in the ceremonial county of Shropshire, England. In 1961 the parish had a population of 80. Little Stretton became a civil parish in 1899 being formed from Church Stretton, on 1 April 1966 the parish was abolished and merged with Church Stretton. It is located in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty between the Long Mynd and Ragleth Hill. Lying on the B5477 south of the market town of Church Stretton; similarly, the small village of All Stretton lies to the north of Church Stretton on the same road. A milestone in the centre of the village on the B5477, which is called Ludlow Road at this point, indicates that Ludlow is 14 miles (23 km) away, to the south. The centre of Church Stretton is 1.3 miles (2.1 km) away via the B5477. The Quinny Brook runs from Ashes Hollow through the village and it is a popular place to begin walks up the Long Mynd. The village lies between 590 and 616 feet above sea level. Ragleth Hill lies immediately to the east of the village, on the other side of the Welsh Marches Line and A49. Little Stretton once had its own railway halt: Little Stretton Halt railway station. To the southwest are the hamlets of Minton and Hamperley, which are part of Church Stretton parish and are included within the parish ward of Little Stretton. The modern-day parish of Church Stretton is sometimes referred to as "Church Stretton and Little Stretton".

Minton is a hamlet in Shropshire, England. It is located in the parish of Church Stretton, 2+1⁄2 miles (4.0 km) southwest of the market town of Church Stretton. A historic settlement, it is situated on a foothill of the Long Mynd at around 240 m (790 ft) above sea level. As of 2010, there are around 12 dwellings in the hamlet. Three lanes lead out from the hamlet: one to the A49 road, one mile southeast at Marshbrook; another lane leads to the hamlet of Hamperley, which is also in Church Stretton parish; and Little Stretton is one mile to the northeast.

Acton Scott is a village and parish near Church Stretton in Shropshire, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 Census was 104. It lies in the Shropshire Hills area of outstanding natural beauty. The settlement was recorded as Actune in the 1086 Domesday Book. The Acton family live on the 1,500-acre (6.1 km2) manorial estate and have worked it since the twelfth century. It is most well known for the 30-acre (120,000 m2) Acton Scott Historic Working Farm, founded by the estate's then owner, Tom Acton, in 1975. A Victorian living museum, it featured in the 2009 Victorian Farm BBC TV series. Visitors to the farm could take part in various workshops and courses on such activities as turning butter, hand-milking cows and herding live-stock. Many skills such as bodging, forging, pole-lathing, wheel and brick-making were demonstrated. The museum, which was run by Shropshire Council on lease from the Acton Scott manor estate, closed in June 2021 for economic reasons. The Council relinquished the lease to the estate in 2023. The museum was reopened on 18 April 2025, funded by a charity, under the title of Acton Scott Heritage Farm.

Little Stretton Halt was a minor railway station on the Welsh Marches Line between Craven Arms and Church Stretton in Shropshire, England.

Felhampton is a hamlet in Shropshire, England. It is around 3.5 miles (5.6 km) north of Craven Arms, and 17 miles (27 km) south of Shrewsbury. The hamlet is located by the A49 road.

Bushmoor is a hamlet in Shropshire, England. It is located in the parish of Wistanstow, 1¼ miles north of that village, and half a mile west of the A49 road. The lane running into the village from Wistanstow is a Roman road, which ran between the Roman settlements and forts at Leintwardine and Wroxeter. The present day lane turns a sharp corner (to the east and the A49) off this ancient route and this is known as The Corner.

Cwm Head is a hamlet in Shropshire, England. The name is part-Welsh, part-English and means "Head of the Valley". It is located in the civil parish of Wistanstow and on the B4370 road, 1+1⁄4 miles (2.0 km) southwest of Marshbrook and the A49 road. From Cwm Head, the B4370 heads downhill both towards Marshbrook and in the other direction towards Horderley and the A489. There is a Church of England parish church at Cwm Head - "St Michael and All Angels". It was built in 1845 to a neo-Norman design by H. C. Whitling and is built largely of stone. To the northwest is the hamlet of Hamperley while to the northeast (towards Marshbrook) is the hamlet of Whittingslow. The hamlet lies between 226m and 232m above sea level.
