On July 28, 2019, a mass shooting occurred at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Gilroy, California. The gunman killed three people and wounded 17 others before killing himself after a shootout with responding police officers.As of 2020, investigators had not determined the motives of the gunman, identified as 19-year-old Santino William Legan. The FBI opened a domestic terrorism investigation into the incident.

The Gilroy Garlic Festival was a food festival in the United States, held annually from 1979 to 2019 at Christmas Hill Park in Gilroy, California, on the last full weekend in July. After its cancellation in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a drive-through festival was held on July 23–25 and 30–31 July and August 1, 2021. In April 2022, the Gilroy Garlic Festival Association announced the indefinite suspension of the traditional large-format festival, and that it would instead host smaller individual events. In May 2022, the festival was canceled permanently.An annual three-day event, the Gilroy Garlic Festival was one of the country's best known food festivals, drawing visitors from across the nation. Located about 30 miles (48 km) southeast of San Jose, Gilroy is home to about 60,000 people, and the city is a major producer of garlic. The festival was Gilroy's top fundraiser, staffed with volunteers to raise money for nonprofit groups including clubs and schools.

The Miller Red Barn is a historic wooden hay barn constructed in 1891, in Gilroy, California, using pole construction techniques. It was erected on land belonging to Henry Miller, a prominent California cattle baron of that era. The barn is most known for its connection to agriculture production in Santa Clara County, and its role within the agricultural estate of Henry Miller, who was a partner in the cattle-raising and meat-packing enterprise of Miller & Lux in San Francisco. The Miller Red Barn was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 26, 2016.

Gilroy High School is a co-educational public school located in Gilroy, California, that serves the city of Gilroy. A part of the Gilroy Unified School District, is one of two public comprehensive high schools in the city and has an approximate enrollment of 1,500 students.

The Wheeler Hospital was a historic hospital constructed in 1929, in Gilroy, California. The hospital was designed by California architect William Henry Weeks and funded by merchant Lin Walker Wheeler. The Wheeler Hospital was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 13, 1990. In 1990, the Wheeler Hospital merged with an elder care facility to establish the Wheeler Manor Senior Apartments.

The Dennis DeBell Uvas Creek Park Preserve is a 125-acre greenbelt preserve operated by the City of Gilroy in southwest Santa Clara County, California. The Uvas Creek, which meanders through the center of the preserve, is its defining characteristic. The preserve is bordered by Uvas Creek Levee on the north, and by Christmas Hill Park on the south. A paved trail runs for approximately 2 miles along the boundary of the preserve, and can be used for jogging, hiking or bicycling.The park is open seven days a week from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM from March - October, and 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM from November - February.

Gilroy is a city in Northern California's Santa Clara County, south of Morgan Hill and north of San Benito County. Gilroy is the southernmost city in the San Francisco Bay Area, with a population of 59,520 as of the 2020 Census. Gilroy's origins lie in the village of San Ysidro that grew in the early 19th century out of Rancho San Ysidro, granted to Californio ranchero Ygnacio Ortega in 1809. Following Ygnacio's death in 1833, his daughter Clara Ortega de Gilroy and son-in-law John Gilroy inherited the largest portion of the rancho and began developing the settlement. When the town was incorporated in 1868, it was renamed in honor of John Gilroy, a Scotsman who had emigrated to California in 1814, naturalized as a Mexican citizen, adopted the Spanish language, and converted to Catholicism, taking the name of Juan Bautista Gilroy.Gilroy is known for its garlic crop and the annual Gilroy Garlic Festival, featuring various foods containing garlic. These led to the city being nicknamed the Garlic Capital of the World. It is also known for boutique wine production, as part of the Santa Clara Valley AVA, mostly consisting of family vineyards around the base of the Santa Cruz Mountains to the west.

The Gilroy Free Library is a Carnegie Library building in Gilroy, California. The building is now the location of the Gilroy Museum.

Christian Church of Gilroy is a historic church located at 160 5th Street in Gilroy, California. The church was built in 1857 for Gilroy's congregation of the Christian Church, also known as the Disciples of Christ. The congregation was one of the first of any denomination in Gilroy, and it was the first to build its own church. The Greek Revival church is a rectangular, 1+1⁄2-story building with a bell tower over the northern entrance. The tower features louvered openings, corner pilasters, and a projecting cornice at the top. The church held the 1859 State Meeting of the Disciples of Christ, which attracted roughly 1,000 attendees. In 1885, the church moved several blocks to its present location.The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The Edgar Holloway House is a historic house in Gilroy, California. It was built in 1903 for Edgar and Dora Holloway, whose grandparents had taken part in the California Gold Rush. After they died in 1912–1913, the house was sold out of the Holloway family. It belonged to the Barshinger family until 1949, and it was later repurposed as a battered women's shelter.The house was designed by William H. Weeks in the Colonial Revival and Victorian architectural styles. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since January 28, 1982.

The Old City Hall is a historical building built in 1905, and once served as a courthouse, the mayor's office, a jail, a clerk office, and fire department. The building is located at 7410 Monterey Street in Gilroy, California. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places listings in Santa Clara County, California since April 16, 1975. The building is a good example of Californian architecture and the Mission Revival style at the turn of the century. It was nicknamed the "Grand Old Lady".

Gilroy station is a Caltrain station located in Gilroy, California, United States. It is the southernmost terminus of the Caltrain system, and is only served during weekday rush hours in the peak direction, with trains going toward San Francisco in the morning and returning southbound in the evening. The station building was constructed by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1918 and restored in 1998. Future plans call for extended Amtrak Capitol Corridor service, as well as California High-Speed Rail trains, to also stop at Gilroy. The station was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2019 as Gilroy Southern Pacific Railroad Depot.
