Gwavas is a hamlet in the parish of Sithney, Cornwall, United Kingdom. Gwavas is adjoining Lowertown-by-Helston. The hamlet is a rural farming hamlet which once had a shop. Gwavas is 1.5 miles (2.4 km) northwest of Helston. The hamlet is notable for a German plane crash during World War II, when a farmer here heard a loud noise and went out to find a plane crashed into his field. His wife made the German men cups of tea, while the farmer went in and cleaned the men's clothes and whistle.

Lowertown-by-Helston is a large hamlet in Sithney civil parish, bordering Wendron parish, in Cornwall, United Kingdom. The hamlet is one mile north of the centre of the town of Helston, and is built around the River Cober. The hamlet used to be an industrial village, with mills, mines, railway stations, shops and churches; all of which have been closed down. The settlement is named Lowertown on Ordnance Survey maps. The longer name is used when necessary to distinguish it from the Lowertown in Luxulyan parish. Because Lowertown is built on the banks of the River Cober it is vulnerable to flooding. The hamlet is not known to have destructive floods but the river can overflow onto the road and path along it. The hill going down into Lowertown can also flood, but has never had a dramatic flood. There are still remains of the mills and mines at Lowertown. The mills have been turned into houses as well as the other historic features and the old mines have now been taken away; but there are still remnants such as leats and other mine workings. The hamlet of Gwavas is joined onto Lowertown. The Helston railway went through Lowertown and there are two bridges in the hamlet and a 90-foot viaduct.

Theories about its name are: That its name started as Cornish dialect English for "wet my throat", here used as a name for a dry field. Earlier: that this name is a corruption of "waterman route", due to it being near the water supply towards one of the sources of the River Cober. That the name derives from a corruption of Welter-ma (from "wheal" and "man") and "Trout", the name of the miner.

Helston Community College (formerly Gwealhellis Secondary Modern School) is a co-educational secondary school and sixth form located in Helston in the English county of Cornwall.The South Site of the school was previously a grammar school that had Derwent Coleridge as a headmaster. His pupils included Charles Kingsley, John Duke Coleridge, Richard Edmonds, Thomas Rowe Edmonds, John Rogers, Henry Trengrouse and James Trevenen.Previously a foundation school administered by Cornwall Council and a Co-operative Trust, in June 2017 Helston Community College converted to academy status and became sponsored by the Southerly Point Co-operative Multi Academy Trust. The Department for Education transferred the College to Truro and Penwith MAT in January 2023 and Southerly Point Co-operative MAT was shut. Helston Community College offers GCSEs, BTECs and City and Guilds courses as programmes of study for pupils, while students in the sixth form have the option to study from a range of A Levels and further BTECs. Pupils from the school take part in the annual Furry Dance, an ancient Cornish custom which is held on the Feast of St. Michael.

The Helston Railway (Cornish: Hyns-horn Hellys) is a heritage railway in Cornwall which aims to rebuild and preserve as much as possible of the former GWR Helston Railway between Nancegollen and Water-Ma-Trout on the outskirts of Helston. It is operated by the Helston Railway Preservation Company using members of the Helston Railway Preservation Society. The Railway was a 8.5 miles (13.7 km) long 4 ft 8+1⁄2 in (1,435 mm) standard gauge railway branch line and is the southernmost branch line in the United Kingdom. It opened in 1887 and was absorbed by the Great Western Railway in 1898, continuing in existence as the Helston branch, and closing to passengers in 1962 and to goods in 1964.It was built to open up the agricultural district of south-west Cornwall, joining Helston to the main line railway network at Gwinear Road, between Penzance and Truro. Its predominant business was agricultural, but in summer it carried holidaymakers, and its terminus at Helston was the railhead for a pioneering road connection service to the Lizard. During the Second World War there was considerable goods traffic at Nancegollan, sponsored by the Admiralty. The current Heritage Railway has won a number of awards including: The Ian Allan Publishing Heritage Railway of the Year 2010, The Heritage Railway Association Publication & Media Award 2012 and The Heritage Railway Association Small Groups Award 2019.

Trevarno is a private country estate in south-west Cornwall, England, UK, near the village of Crowntown, 2 miles (3.2 km) north-east of Helston. First developed in the 13th century, the estate was owned by a succession of families until 1994 when it was sold for development as a tourist attraction based around its extensive gardens. It was open to the public from 1998 until 2011, but the estate has since been broken up and the house and gardens are again a private residence.

Museum of Cornish Life (formerly Helston Museum) is a museum situated in the former market town of Helston, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is located immediately behind Helston Guildhall. The building was originally designed as the town's Market House in 1837.The 4th Battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry (D Company) used the complex as its drill hall during the First World War.The museum was founded in the market hall in 1949. It expanded into the meat market in the early 1980s and into the adjoining Drill Hall in 1999.In front of the building is a cannon salvaged from the wreck of the frigate HMS Anson which foundered off Loe Bar on 29 December 1807.The Museum's collection reflects both the social and industrial history of The Lizard Peninsula, from mining, fishing and farming through to home life in the 18th - 20th centuries. Previously run by Cornwall Council, management of the museum was taken over by the South Kerrier Heritage Trust in August 2013. The Trust is a local registered charity working with the community, and day-to-day work at the museum is largely undertaken by volunteers.

Helston railway station was the terminus of the Helston Railway in Cornwall, United Kingdom, which opened on the 9 May 1887 and during its time of operation was the most southerly railway station on the UK mainland. The line was operated by the Great Western Railway and was absorbed by that company in 1898. It closed to passengers on the 5 November 1962 and to freight on the 5 October 1964. Despite being a terminus station, Helston was built in the same manner as other stations (Praze and Nancegollan) on the line as a through station. This came from the original plan that the line would head towards The Lizard but this never happened and the station remained unchanged and always looked like a 'through' station until closure. The station secured its place in history when it became the first place in the country with a railway-operated bus service, the GWR road motor services meeting trains at the station and carrying passengers on towards The Lizard. In 1928 the service ran from Helston Station through Dodson's Gap (for Gunwalloe), Cury Cross Lanes (for Cury), Penhale, and Ruan Crossroads (for Cadgwith}, the fare to The Lizard being 1s 9d.

The hundred of Kerrier was the name of one of ten ancient administrative shires of Cornwall, in the United Kingdom. Kerrier (sometimes Kirrier) is thought by Charles Thomas to be derived from an obsolete name (ker hyr = long fort) of Castle Pencaire on Tregonning Hill, Breage. It is likely that an even earlier name for the district was Predannack which has been displaced by the Lizard Peninsula as a geographical name.
