Ez-Zitouna University (Arabic: جامعة الزيتونة, French: Université Ez-Zitouna) is a public ancient medieval university in Tunis, Tunisia. The university originates in the Al-Zaytuna Mosque, founded at the end of the 7th century or in the early 8th century, which developed into a major Islamic centre of learning in North Africa. It consists of the Higher Institute of Theology and the Higher Institute of Islamic Civilisation in Tunis and a research institution, the Center of Islamic Studies, in Kairouan.

Bab Sidi Kacem (Arabic: باب سيدي قاسم) is one of the gates of the Medina of Tunis, the old capital of Tunisia. It was built in the Ottoman period at the same time as Bab Laassal, Bab Sidi Abdessalem and Bab El Gorjani. It was named after Sidi Kacem El Jalizzi, a manufacturer of glazed tiles who died in 1497 and was buried nearby.

Sidi El Baghdadi Mosque (Arabic: جامع سيدي البغدادي) is a mosque in the south-west of the medina of Tunis.

The Battle of the Bagradas River (the ancient name of the Medjerda), also known as the Battle of Tunis, was a victory by a Carthaginian army led by Xanthippus over a Roman army led by Marcus Atilius Regulus in the spring of 255 BC, nine years into the First Punic War. The previous year, the newly constructed Roman navy established naval superiority over Carthage. The Romans used this advantage to invade Carthage's homeland, which roughly aligned with modern-day Tunisia in North Africa. After landing on the Cape Bon Peninsula and conducting a successful campaign, the fleet returned to Sicily, leaving Regulus with 15,500 men to hold the lodgement in Africa over the winter. Instead of holding his position, Regulus advanced towards the city of Carthage and defeated the Carthaginian army at the Battle of Adys. The Romans followed up and captured Tunis, only 16 kilometres (10 mi) from Carthage. Despairing, the Carthaginians sued for peace, but Regulus's proposed terms were so harsh the Carthaginians decided to fight on. They gave charge of the training of their army, and eventually operational control, to the Spartan mercenary general Xanthippus. In the spring of 255 BC, Xanthippus led an army strong in cavalry and elephants against the Romans' infantry-based force. The Romans had no effective answer to the elephants. Their outnumbered cavalry were chased from the field and the Carthaginian cavalry then surrounded most of the Romans and wiped them out; 500 survived and were captured, including Regulus. A force of 2,000 Romans avoided being surrounded and retreated to Aspis. The war continued for another 14 years, mostly on Sicily or in nearby waters, before ending with a Roman victory; the terms offered to Carthage were more generous than those proposed by Regulus.

Kasbah Mosque (Arabic: جامع القصبة ; French: Mosquée de la Casbah) is a mosque in Tunis, Tunisia. It is a listed as a Historical Monument.

During the siege of Tunis in October 238 BC a rebel army under Mathos was besieged by a Carthaginian force under Hamilcar Barca and Hannibal. A portion of the Carthaginian army, which had served in Sicily during the First Punic War, mutinied in late 241 BC in the wake of Carthage's defeat, starting the Mercenary War. After three years of increasingly bitter war, the Carthaginians defeated the rebel field army at the Battle of the Saw, after capturing its leaders. The Carthaginians then moved to besiege the rebels' strongest remaining stronghold at Tunis. The Carthaginian commander, Hamilcar, split his forces to blockade the rebels from both north and south. At the northern camp, commanded by his subordinate Hannibal, he had the ten captured rebel leaders tortured to death and their bodies crucified before returning to his own base to the south of Tunis. Mathos organised a night attack against Hannibal's camp, which took the ill-disciplined Carthaginian defenders by surprise. It scattered the northern part of their army, and Hannibal and 30 Carthaginian notables were captured. They were tortured, mutilated and crucified still living. Hamilcar withdrew to the north with the remaining half of his army. Despite having broken the siege, Mathos abandoned Tunis and withdrew south. Hamilcar and his fellow general Hanno followed the rebels and in late 238 BC wiped them out at the Battle of Leptis Parva.

Souk Es Sekajine (Arabic: سوق السكاجين) or Souk Es Sarragine is one of the souks of the medina of Tunis. specializing in leather goods, saddles, and horse harnesses.

Bab Menara (Arabic: باب منارة) is one of the gates of the medina of Tunis. It takes the name Bab Menara ("Gate of the Lighthouse"), either due to a lighthouse on the old palace, or due to a large oil lamp that was kept lit at the gate to illuminate the road for incoming caravans. The gate was finished by 1276, and connected the medina to El Haoua.
