Sacred Heart School is a historic building in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. Completed in 1915, the building replaced Marquette Hall near Sacred Heart Church that had been built in 1888. It was designed by the Dubuque architectural firm of Fridolin J. Heer & Son. While the firm has several of its designs represented on the National Register of Historic Places, this is the only school building. The Sisters of St. Francis from Dubuque and lay teachers taught in the school, which had 640 students when it opened. Its early principals were laymen until 1952 when a Sister became the principal. A ninth-grade class for boys was begun in 1930 and tenth grade was added two years later. The high school program was discontinued in 1949 due to a teacher shortage. Enrollment in school was 900 in 1953 and 1,020, excluding the kindergarten, in 1956. The kindergarten program was discontinued the following year because of a lack of classroom space. Eventually, the school itself was closed. The former school building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2018. It is being converted into moderate-income housing. The historic status stems from its architect and its closeness to other church buildings.

The Dubuque Casket Company is a historic building located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. The city was a leading national market in the production of caskets towards the end of the 19th century. This location had been the site of a casket manufacturing plant from 1877 to 1987. The Dubuque Furniture and Burial Case Company was the first firm in Dubuque and the first to locate here. The building was largely destroyed by fire in 1883 and the company was forced out of business. The Dubuque Casket Company was incorporated in 1893 and acquired this property. They started construction of the first part of this building the same year. The four-story brick Neoclassical building was one of the largest manufacturing facilities in Dubuque. The machine and equipment room was located on the first floor, they manufactured fine cloth covered caskets on the second floor, they manufactured undertaker's dry goods on the third floor, and the fourth floor was used for storage. The first addition, now known as the center section was begun in 1903, and another expansion that also unified the main facade was begun in 1911. Two other Dubuque casket manufacturers, Iowa Coffin Company and the Hawkeye Casket Company, were out of business by 1924. Dubuque Casket Company remained in business until 1988. That year the building was sold to Boyes Auto and Truck Parts Co. They sold the building in 2005 to Community Housing Initiatives, Inc., who converted it into an apartment building. It was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006, and it was included as a contributing property in the Washington Residential Historic District in 2015.

The Upper Central Avenue Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. At the time of its nomination it consisted of 65 resources, which included 56 contributing buildings, one contributing site and eight non-contributing buildings. This six block section of Central Avenue is located on the north side of the central business district. The largely linear district includes a jog at 18th Street. Below the jog the street was originally named Clay Street and above it Couler Avenue. It was also the dividing line where all commerce used the German language exclusively to the north. At one time the street featured a streetcar route and it was a significant farm-to-market route and a gateway into the city from the north. The period of significance for the district covers the years 1856 to 1919, but its historic commercial development occurred during the 1870s and 1880s. The buildings were constructed in brick and are largely two to three stories tall. There are also several single-story buildings and one that is four stories tall. The Italianate and the Queen Anne are dominant. Nine of the buildings are major commercial blocks. In addition to the commercial buildings, there is the two-story, brick, former Fire Engine House Number 1 that faces south at the jog in the street. The buildings in the district are considered some of the best examples of late-19th-century commercial designs in the city.

The Hollenfelz House, also known as St. Mary's High School for Boys, is a historic building located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. This highly decorative Second Empire structure was built as a home for Michael Hollenfelz, who owned a wholesale firm dealing with wines, liquors and beer. The building features a mansard roof with dormers and a cupola, which is normal for this style, and High Victorian decorative details, which is not. Particularly unusual is the cornice and the stringcourses. In 1906 it was acquired by St. Mary's Catholic Church across the street for a boy's high school. The school was operated by the Brothers of Mary from St. Louis, and its curriculum focused on business and commerce. That school ceased operations in 1929 and the building was then used for the parish grade school. In 1957 it was converted into an apartment building. It was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, and it was included as a contributing property in the Washington Residential Historic District in 2015.

The Seminary Hill Residential Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. At the time of its nomination it consisted of 55 resources, which included 38 contributing buildings, one contributing site, one contributing object, 13 non-contributing buildings, one non-contributing structure, and one non-contributing object. The district is a blufftop residential area that surrounds Madison Park. It takes its name from its proximity to the former German Theological Seminary, now the seminary located at the University of Dubuque. Clarke Drive, the main artery through the district, was also known as Seminary Street at one time. About half of the historic buildings here are brick. The Italianate style is dominate, with several examples of the Italian Villa design. There are also a few examples of the Second Empire, Queen Anne, and Classical Revival styles. This residential area was developed between 1855 and 1919.

The Upper Iowa Street Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. At the time of its nomination it consisted of nine resources, which included eight contributing buildings and one non-contributing building. The district is a single block with commercial and residential buildings on both sides of Iowa Street. It was originally a residential section on the north side of the central business district. The first two commercial buildings were substantial Italianate-style structures constructed on the north side of the block in the mid-1880s. In the 1890s larger and more elaborate Queen Anne commercial buildings were built to the south. The oldest building is an 1872 residence that was used as a doctor's office and other business purposes. It has subsequently been covered in Permastone. The rest of the buildings are brick with stone ornamentation.

The Metz Manufacturing Company is a historic building in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. The company was established as Hagge and Metz by John Hagge and Louis Metz in 1898. They were a planing mill that produced sashes, doors, blinds, frames, moldings, and stair work for large private and public buildings. The company name was changed to Metz Manufacturing in 1902. The following year they moved to this building. The three-story brick structure built over a raised stone basement was constructed sometime before 1900. It was acquired by Metx LLC in 2017 and renovated into an office building with the first tenant moving in in 2019. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021.

Saint Mary's Catholic Church is a former parish of the Archdiocese of Dubuque. The church is located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States, at the corner of 15th and White Streets. The church is recognizable by its steeple– one of the tallest in the area. The church property was added to the National Register of Historic Places as an historic district in 2015, and the various buildings were included as contributing properties in the Washington Residential Historic District later in the same year.

Washington Residential Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. At the time of its nomination it consisted of 327 resources, which included 262 contributing buildings, 61 non-contributing buildings, and two non-contributing objects. This is one of the early residential areas of Dubuque, and was home to its German community. It also defines the "walkable city" with commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings located here. There are a number of churches in the district from various denominations. Of particular interest are St. Mary's Catholic Church (1866), St. John's Lutheran Church (1880), and St. Matthew's Lutheran Church (1908). A significant number of the buildings were constructed in brick, and the vast majority of the buildings in the district were built by 1891. Vernacular structures are commonplace here, as are various Victorian styles. Hollenfelz House (1891) and the Dubuque Casket Company building (1894) are individually listed on the National Register. The former St. Mary's Catholic Church complex forms its own historic district within this one.

Saint Patrick's Church is a Catholic parish in the Archdiocese of Dubuque, and is located at 15th and Iowa Streets, Dubuque, Iowa, United States. The church and rectory were included as contributing properties in the Jackson Park Historic District that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. St. Patrick's Church is located two blocks away from St. Mary's Church. The reason for the close proximity of the two parishes was that St. Mary was originally built for service to German families of Dubuque, and St. Patrick's provided services for the Irish settlers to Dubuque.

St. John's Episcopal Church is a parish of the Diocese of Iowa, located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. The church was included as a contributing property in the Jackson Park Historic District that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

The Ziepprecht Block is a historic building located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. Completed in 1888, it is a fine example of transitional commercial Italianate architecture. The three-story brick structure features a heavy projecting cornice and rounded pediment from the Italianate, with larger paired windows from the Second Empire style, and three-sided bay windows from the Queen Anne style. It is also one of a small number of double storefront blocks that remain in the downtown area. The building is named for Henry Ziepprecht a German-born druggist who settled in Dubuque in 1856 and died in 1887. His estate paid to have this building constructed on the location of an older building that housed his drug store. Now managed by Joseph Wittmer, the drug store and a confectionery were the first businesses to occupy the storefronts. The upper floors housed apartments. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
