Washington Residential Historic District

Saint Mary's Catholic Church is a former parish of the Archdiocese of Dubuque. The church is located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States, at the corner of 15th and White Streets. The church is recognizable by its steeple– one of the tallest in the area. The church property was added to the National Register of Historic Places as an historic district in 2015, and the various buildings were included as contributing properties in the Washington Residential Historic District later in the same year.

The Hollenfelz House, also known as St. Mary's High School for Boys, is a historic building located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. This highly decorative Second Empire structure was built as a home for Michael Hollenfelz, who owned a wholesale firm dealing with wines, liquors and beer. The building features a mansard roof with dormers and a cupola, which is normal for this style, and High Victorian decorative details, which is not. Particularly unusual is the cornice and the stringcourses. In 1906 it was acquired by St. Mary's Catholic Church across the street for a boy's high school. The school was operated by the Brothers of Mary from St. Louis, and its curriculum focused on business and commerce. That school ceased operations in 1929 and the building was then used for the parish grade school. In 1957 it was converted into an apartment building. It was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, and it was included as a contributing property in the Washington Residential Historic District in 2015.

The Ziepprecht Block is a historic building located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. Completed in 1888, it is a fine example of transitional commercial Italianate architecture. The three-story brick structure features a heavy projecting cornice and rounded pediment from the Italianate, with larger paired windows from the Second Empire style, and three-sided bay windows from the Queen Anne style. It is also one of a small number of double storefront blocks that remain in the downtown area. The building is named for Henry Ziepprecht a German-born druggist who settled in Dubuque in 1856 and died in 1887. His estate paid to have this building constructed on the location of an older building that housed his drug store. Now managed by Joseph Wittmer, the drug store and a confectionery were the first businesses to occupy the storefronts. The upper floors housed apartments. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

The John Bell Block, also known as the German Bank & Trust Building, is a historic building located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. The three-story brick commercial Italianate building was constructed by local businessman John Bell in 1886. Its location on the north side of the central business district meant that it housed several businesses owned by the city's German immigrant population. Chief among them was the German Trust and Savings Bank. It became a tenant when the building was completed and it remained until it built its own building in 1922. In 1918 anti-German sentiments that resulted from World War I forced the bank to change its name to Union Trust and Savings Bank. It remained in operation until 1932 when a run on its deposits as a result of the Great Depression forced it to fail. Its building was taken over by Dubuque Bank and Trust. Three prominent Dubuque professionals also had offices on the second floor of the building. German-born architect Martin Heer had offices beginning in 1888. He partnered with another German-born architect, Guido Beck, from 1889 to 1895. Beck was noted for his commercial blocks and churches. Contractor Anton Zwack had offices here from 1911 to c. 1965. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. An early tenant was Baumgartner and Kleih Hardware store

Dubuque City Hall is located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. The building was designed by J.N. Moody after Faneuil Hall in Boston and the Fulton Street Market in New York City. Dubuque architect John F. Rague served as the supervising architect during construction. Following a Medieval tradition, the city market was located on the first floor, municipal offices were located on the second floor, and a ballroom for civic events was located on the third floor.The three-story brick structure rests on a raised limestone basement. It features a gable roof with bracketed eaves. Each gable has a circular window. The 11-foot (3.4 m) tall windows are located in bays defined by arches. The building was first occupied in February 1858. Initially, the main floor was divided into stalls. They were converted into additional office space for the city when the market relocated. The third floor ballroom was converted into an archery and pistol range for the police department, a bowling alley, and a horseshoe pitching area. The original cupola, which held a bell and four-faced clock, became deteriorated and was removed from the building in 1954. The bell was placed in the plaza next to city hall. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. A new cupola was created using the original design, and it was erected in 1990. The bell was returned to the tower at that time.

The Dubuque Casket Company is a historic building located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. The city was a leading national market in the production of caskets towards the end of the 19th century. This location had been the site of a casket manufacturing plant from 1877 to 1987. The Dubuque Furniture and Burial Case Company was the first firm in Dubuque and the first to locate here. The building was largely destroyed by fire in 1883 and the company was forced out of business. The Dubuque Casket Company was incorporated in 1893 and acquired this property. They started construction of the first part of this building the same year. The four-story brick Neoclassical building was one of the largest manufacturing facilities in Dubuque. The machine and equipment room was located on the first floor, they manufactured fine cloth covered caskets on the second floor, they manufactured undertaker's dry goods on the third floor, and the fourth floor was used for storage. The first addition, now known as the center section was begun in 1903, and another expansion that also unified the main facade was begun in 1911. Two other Dubuque casket manufacturers, Iowa Coffin Company and the Hawkeye Casket Company, were out of business by 1924. Dubuque Casket Company remained in business until 1988. That year the building was sold to Boyes Auto and Truck Parts Co. They sold the building in 2005 to Community Housing Initiatives, Inc., who converted it into an apartment building. It was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006, and it was included as a contributing property in the Washington Residential Historic District in 2015.

The Metz Manufacturing Company is a historic building in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. The company was established as Hagge and Metz by John Hagge and Louis Metz in 1898. They were a planing mill that produced sashes, doors, blinds, frames, moldings, and stair work for large private and public buildings. The company name was changed to Metz Manufacturing in 1902. The following year they moved to this building. The three-story brick structure built over a raised stone basement was constructed sometime before 1900. It was acquired by Metx LLC in 2017 and renovated into an office building with the first tenant moving in in 2019. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021.

Saint Patrick's Church is a Catholic parish in the Archdiocese of Dubuque, and is located at 15th and Iowa Streets, Dubuque, Iowa, United States. The church and rectory were included as contributing properties in the Jackson Park Historic District that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. St. Patrick's Church is located two blocks away from St. Mary's Church. The reason for the close proximity of the two parishes was that St. Mary was originally built for service to German families of Dubuque, and St. Patrick's provided services for the Irish settlers to Dubuque.

The Upper Central Avenue Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. At the time of its nomination it consisted of 65 resources, which included 56 contributing buildings, one contributing site and eight non-contributing buildings. This six block section of Central Avenue is located on the north side of the central business district. The largely linear district includes a jog at 18th Street. Below the jog the street was originally named Clay Street and above it Couler Avenue. It was also the dividing line where all commerce used the German language exclusively to the north. At one time the street featured a streetcar route and it was a significant farm-to-market route and a gateway into the city from the north. The period of significance for the district covers the years 1856 to 1919, but its historic commercial development occurred during the 1870s and 1880s. The buildings were constructed in brick and are largely two to three stories tall. There are also several single-story buildings and one that is four stories tall. The Italianate and the Queen Anne are dominant. Nine of the buildings are major commercial blocks. In addition to the commercial buildings, there is the two-story, brick, former Fire Engine House Number 1 that faces south at the jog in the street. The buildings in the district are considered some of the best examples of late-19th-century commercial designs in the city.

St. John's Episcopal Church is a parish of the Diocese of Iowa, located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. The church was included as a contributing property in the Jackson Park Historic District that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

Jackson Park Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. This is primarily a residential area, with some institutional and commercial buildings, located north of the central business district. The city originally developed just to the south of here. The Cathedral Historic District represents the oldest residential neighborhood in Dubuque, and began to house the working-class people closer to the docks. Once the Jackson Park area opened for development the city's wealthier residents built their homes here. Architectural styles rang from the vernacular, which are found mainly along the bluff, to the high style found mainly along Main and Locust Streets. Most of the houses were built from the mid to the late 19th century. The Andrew-Ryan House (1873) was individually listed on the National Register. Most of the institutional architecture are churches, which include St. John's Episcopal Church (1878) and St. Patrick's Catholic Church (1878). Central High School, no longer extant, was located across from Jackson Park, and it was also individually listed on the National Register before its demise. The Carnegie-Stout Public Library (1902) is located on the south side of the district.

St. Luke's United Methodist Church, also known as St. Luke's Methodist and as St. Luke's United Methodist, is a historic Richardsonian Romanesque-style church located at 1199 Main Street in Dubuque, Iowa. It was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998, and as a contributing property in the Upper Main Street Historic District in 2005. It is part of the Iowa Conference of the United Methodist Church. The church has more Tiffany windows than any other church in the state.According to its NRHP nomination, the building is significant for its history in religion in Dubuque, for its Richardsonian Romanesque (unique in Dubuque), and for its Tiffany glass.: 15
