Bolventor (Cornish: Bedhashardh) is a hamlet on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is situated in Altarnun civil parish between Launceston and Bodmin.

The Jamaica Inn is a traditional inn on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, England, which was built as a coaching inn in 1750, and has a historical association with smuggling. Located just off the A30, near the middle of the moor close to the hamlet of Bolventor, it was originally used as a staging post for changing horses. The 1,122-foot-high (342 m) "Tuber" or "Two Barrows" hill, is close by. The inn was the setting for Daphne du Maurier's 1936 novel Jamaica Inn, about the nocturnal activities of a smuggling ring, "portraying a hidden world as a place of tense excitement and claustrophobia of real peril and thrill." In the novel, it was transformed into a rendezvous and warehouse for smuggling that was solely the home of the landlord and his wife. The novel has been adapted into various media, most famously an eponymous 1939 film directed by Alfred Hitchcock. However, the inn itself has never actually been used as a filming location. The inn is also referenced in "Jamaica Inn", a song by Tori Amos from her album The Beekeeper (2005), written while she was driving along the cliffs in Cornwall, and inspired by the legend she had heard of the inn.

Trewint (Cornish: Trewyns) is a hamlet in the civil parish of Altarnun, east Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The hamlet is just off the A30 main road, and is south of the village of Altarnun. Trewint Downs, part of Bodmin Moor, are further west. The manor of Trewint was recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) when it was held by Roger from Mortain. There was 1 virgate of land and land for 1 plough. There were 1 serf, 4 smallholders, 2 acres of pasture and 10 sheep. The value of the manor was 5 shillings though it had formerly been worth 10 shillings. John Wesley often visited Trewint, lodging in Digory Isbell's home which is now a museum of Wesley and Methodism. Trewint is also the name of places in the parishes of Blisland and Poundstock. The meaning of Trewint is "windy farm", though Trewint, Blisland (Tyrwynt) means "windy land".

Bowithick (Cornish: Boswydhek, meaning Wooded Dwelling) is a hamlet on the northern edge of Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. Bowithick is situated near the disused Davidstow Moor airfield. The nearest villages are St Clether and Altarnun (where the 2011 Census population is included). There is a ford and two clapper bridges on the Penpont Water and the 346 m (1137 ft) high hill Bray Down nearby with Buttern Hill (1135 ft) immediately to the west of it. The manor of Bowithick was recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) when it was held by Osferth from Robert, Count of Mortain. He had also held it before 1066 and paid tax for one furlong. There was land for 2 ploughs. There were one villein and 2 smallholders. The value of the manor was 2 shillings though it had formerly been worth 5 shillings. The area around Bowithick was busier during World War I than it is today due to the presence of a Prisoner-of-war camp, the German prisoners being used to mine wolfram and tin at an opencast mine in Buttern Hill immediately to the south west. During World War II Bowithick had a near miss when a 115mm shell fired from a 155 mm M1 Howitzer as part of a shoot from the training range on Laneast downs landed in a nearby field that was being ploughed, the ploughman escaping uninjured as he was having lunch at the farmhouse. In April 2021 two small brown crabs were found in the Ford alongside Bowithick Bridge despite being ten miles from the sea as the crow flies.

St Nonna's Church, also known as the Cathedral of the Moors, is the second largest church on Bodmin Moor, Cornwall, located in the village of Altarnun (meaning: "altar of Nonn"). The dedication is to Saint Non or Nonna, who was the mother of St David. The church is mentioned in Daphne du Maurier's Jamaica Inn; it is the church in which the evil vicar of Altarnun Francis Davey depicts himself in a painting as a wolf while the members of his congregation have the heads of sheep. The church is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Trigg Major, the archdeaconry of Bodmin, and the diocese of Truro. Its benefice is united with those of Saint Sidwell and Saint Gulval, Laneast, and Saint Clederus, St Clether. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building.

Altarnun Wesleyan Chapel is the former Methodist chapel in Altarnun in Cornwall. Completed in 1859, the chapel has been a Grade II listed building since 1988 and is now privately owned. The chapel is built of snecked (the keying together of parallel courses of stone) local slatestone with granite dressings and a moulded plinth. The building has a slate roof with gable ends and is rectangular in shape with two entrances at the front set forward from the main building and each with lean-to roofs. The doors to these porches are 19th-century and are set in dressed granite four-centred arches. The left hand side of the building is rendered and the right side is hung with rag slates each with three square headed three-light windows. Inside the 19th-century box pews originally had a raised central pew at the west end but which since has been removed. The 19th-century rostrum had a shallow niche to its rear with the text "Thy Word is God" inscribed. The Gothic organ case was Victorian while the partition fitted across the nave dividing the church in two was 20th-century work. John Wesley often visited Trewint, lodging in Digory Isbell's home which is now a museum of Wesley and Methodism. The sculpted relief portrait of John Wesley over the doorway of the chapel was carved by the then 16 year-old Neville Northey Burnard who lived next door to the chapel.

Altarnun ( AWL-tər-NUN, OL-; Standard Written Form: Alternonn) is a village and civil parish in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It lies 7 miles (11 km) west of Launceston on the north-eastern edge of Bodmin Moor at grid reference SX 223 811. The parish of Altarnun includes the village of Fivelanes and the hamlets of Bolventor, Treween and Trewint, and had a population of 976 at the 2001 census, increasing to 1,084 according at the 2011 census. Other hamlets in the parish are Bowithick, Palmersbridge, South Carne, Tolborough, Lower Tregunnon and Tredaule. The area of the parish is 15,018 acres (60.78 km2), the largest in Cornwall. By the time of the 2011 census the figures for the ward of Altarnun were provided. This ward contained 48 locations in the area and gave a population of 4,038. The moorland area of the parish is large and lies west of the village towards Rough Tor and southwards towards Dozmary Pool. There is a large conifer plantation at Wilsey Down Forest (Halvana Plantation). The village is in the valley of the Penpont Water and the parish is divided by the A30 trunk road which passes close to Fivelanes, once an important stopping place for stage coaches.

Goodaver, Goodaver stone circle or Goodaver circle (Cornish: Dons Meyn Kosmeur) (grid reference SX20857515) is a stone circle located in the parish of Altarnun, near Bolventor on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall.

Dozmary Pool is a small lake, in the civil parish of Altarnun on Bodmin Moor, Cornwall, UK. It is situated 16.9 kilometres (10.5 mi) from the sea and lies about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) north-east of Bodmin and 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) south of Bolventor. It originated in the post-glacial period. The outflow from the pool is into Colliford Lake and is therefore one of the sources of the River Fowey. In the past the name has been spelt as Dozmaré and as Dosmery Pool. The pool and surrounding area was designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1951 for its biological interest and is within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (originally the Bodmin Moor AONB).

St Clether is a civil parish and village in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The village is situated on the east flank of Bodmin Moor approximately eight miles (13 km) west of Launceston in the valley of the River Inny. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 156. The original Norman church of St Clederus was, apart from the tower, rebuilt in 1865. The tower is built of granite and is of late medieval date; the font is Norman and very plain. The benefice is united with those of Saint Sidwell and Saint Gulval, Laneast, and Saint Nonna, Altarnun. West of St Clether parish church is a holy well and associated chapel, said to be one of Cornwall's best preserved. The church and holy well are dedicated to Saint Cleder (or Clederus), one of the twenty-four children of Saint Brychan, a Welsh saint and King of Brycheiniog in the 5th century. Arthur Langdon (1896) records five stone crosses in the parish of which four are at the old manor house of Basill Barton.
