Bolventor

The Jamaica Inn is a traditional inn on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall, England, which was built as a coaching inn in 1750, and has a historical association with smuggling. Located just off the A30, near the middle of the moor close to the hamlet of Bolventor, it was originally used as a staging post for changing horses. The 1,122-foot-high (342 m) "Tuber" or "Two Barrows" hill, is close by. The inn was the setting for Daphne du Maurier's 1936 novel Jamaica Inn, about the nocturnal activities of a smuggling ring, "portraying a hidden world as a place of tense excitement and claustrophobia of real peril and thrill." In the novel, it was transformed into a rendezvous and warehouse for smuggling that was solely the home of the landlord and his wife. The novel has been adapted into various media, most famously an eponymous 1939 film directed by Alfred Hitchcock. However, the inn itself has never actually been used as a filming location. The inn is also referenced in "Jamaica Inn", a song by Tori Amos from her album The Beekeeper (2005), written while she was driving along the cliffs in Cornwall, and inspired by the legend she had heard of the inn.

Holy Trinity Church is a former Church of England church in Bolventor, Cornwall, England, UK. It was built in 1846–48 and served as the parish church of Bolventor until its closure in 1981. The church has been Grade II listed since 1988.

Dozmary Pool is a small lake, in the civil parish of Altarnun on Bodmin Moor, Cornwall, UK. It is situated 16.9 kilometres (10.5 mi) from the sea and lies about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) north-east of Bodmin and 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) south of Bolventor. It originated in the post-glacial period. The outflow from the pool is into Colliford Lake and is therefore one of the sources of the River Fowey. In the past the name has been spelt as Dozmaré and as Dosmery Pool. The pool and surrounding area was designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1951 for its biological interest and is within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (originally the Bodmin Moor AONB).

The Beacon (Cornish: An Tansys) on Hendra Downs is a prominent hill, 369 metres (1,211 ft) high, located on the northeastern side of Bodmin Moor in the county of Cornwall, England.

Colliford Lake is a reservoir on Bodmin Moor, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. Covering more than 900 acres (3.6 km2), it is the largest lake in Cornwall. It is situated south of the A30 trunk road near the village of Bolventor, the approximate centre of the lake being at OS grid reference SX179730. Dozmary Pool outfalls into the lake and the lake's own outfall forms one of the tributaries of the River Fowey. The northernmost point of the lake is approximately three-quarters of a mile (1 km) south of Bolventor at OS grid reference SX184756 and the headbank at the southernmost point is approximately three miles (5 km) south of Bolventor at OS grid reference SX177709. Leisure facilities on the site include angling and a 50-acre (200,000 m2) adventure and nature park, Colliford Lake Park, which features trails and footpaths, play areas, wetlands, picnic areas and a cafe. Colliford Lake is managed by the South West Lakes Trust, an environmental and recreational charity which manages fifty inland water sites in Cornwall, Devon, and Somerset.

Goodaver, Goodaver stone circle or Goodaver circle (Cornish: Dons Meyn Kosmeur) (grid reference SX20857515) is a stone circle located in the parish of Altarnun, near Bolventor on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall.

Brown Gelly is a tor, hill and ridge near Dozmary Pool on Bodmin Moor near Liskeard in Cornwall, UK. At its foot lies Browngelly Downs, and the area has preserved various remains of hut circles, barrows and cairns. Five cairns are located in a semi-circular arc along the ridge of Brown Gelly. They are prominent from a distance and Christopher Tilley suggests they were intended to be seen as a group from the west and the east in order to "analogically resemble or simulate tors". The tor is made of a granitic rock that has less autogenic alteration than other areas of Bodmin Moor due to some type of local anomaly. Archaeological aerial reconnaissance was carried out over the area in the 1980s which suggested the remains of a prehistoric settlement comprising several dispersed hut circles. These structures have also been called a "barrow group" by John Barnatt Evidence of flint production and tin streaming has also been found in the area that supports the suggestion of an ancient settlement.

Brown Willy (Cornish: Bronn Wennili, meaning "hill of swallows") is a hill in Cornwall, United Kingdom. The summit, at 1,378 feet (420 metres) above sea level, is the highest point of Bodmin Moor and of Cornwall as a whole. It is about 2+1⁄2 miles (4 kilometres) northwest of Bolventor and 4 miles (6 kilometres) southeast of Camelford. The hill has a variable appearance that depends on the vantage point from which it is seen. It bears the conical appearance of a sugarloaf from the north but widens into a long multi-peaked crest from closer range.

Bodmin Moor (Cornish Standard Written Form: Goon Brenn) is a granite moorland in north-eastern Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is 208 square kilometres (80 sq mi) in size, and the granite dates from the Permian period of geological history. It includes Brown Willy, the highest point in Cornwall, and Rough Tor, a slightly lower peak. Many of Cornwall's rivers have their sources here. It has been inhabited since at least the Neolithic era, when early farmers started clearing trees and farming the land. They left their megalithic monuments, hut circles and cairns, and the Bronze Age culture that followed left further cairns, and more stone circles and stone rows. By medieval and modern times, nearly all the forest was gone and livestock rearing predominated. The name Bodmin Moor is relatively recent. An early mention is in the Royal Cornwall Gazette of 28 November 1812. The upland area was formerly known as Fowey Moor after the River Fowey, which rises within it.

Trewint (Cornish: Trewyns) is a hamlet in the civil parish of Altarnun, east Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The hamlet is just off the A30 main road, and is south of the village of Altarnun. Trewint Downs, part of Bodmin Moor, are further west. The manor of Trewint was recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) when it was held by Roger from Mortain. There was 1 virgate of land and land for 1 plough. There were 1 serf, 4 smallholders, 2 acres of pasture and 10 sheep. The value of the manor was 5 shillings though it had formerly been worth 10 shillings. John Wesley often visited Trewint, lodging in Digory Isbell's home which is now a museum of Wesley and Methodism. Trewint is also the name of places in the parishes of Blisland and Poundstock. The meaning of Trewint is "windy farm", though Trewint, Blisland (Tyrwynt) means "windy land".
