Tiefenstürmig (fortification)

The small ringwork of the Altes Schloss ("old castle") is all that remains of a, now levelled, early medieval fortification on one of the projecting hill spurs of the Mirsberg Heights (Mirsberger Höhe) on the Lange Meile in the valley of the Eggerbach. The spur is called the Schlossberg ("castle hill"). The old castle site lies at a height of 493.4 m above sea level (NN) around 935 metres south-southeast of the Roman Catholic parish church of St. Margareta of Drügendorf in the Upper Franconian municipality of Eggolsheim in Bavaria, Germany. No historical or archaeological information about this hillfort exists, and there have been no finds that might be able to be used to date the site. Based on the design of the fortification it has been tentatively dated to the Carolingian-Ottonian period. All that has survived is a ringwork with an outer ditch in places. The fortification is protected today as heritage site number D-4-6132-0125: "Early Medieval Ringwork" (Frühmittelalterliche Ringwallanlage).

The Lange Meile ("Long Mile") is a plateau (hence the name Auf der Langen Meile - "On the Long Mile" - is often used) in the Franconian Jura in south Germany which is up to about 517 m above sea level (NHN). Heiligenstadt in Oberfranken (officially: Heiligenstadt i. OFr.) is a community with market rights in the Upper Franconian district of Bamberg. The town clusters round the base of Schloss Greifenstein. To further tourism the old school was converted into today's town hall, the historic marketplace was remodelled, and at Easter it is adorned with an Easter fountain. Furthermore, an old barn was converted into a community centre. The community with its houses under memorial protection and its historically interesting church is a well known outing destination. Visitors are especially numerous at Easter when many come to see the Franconian Switzerland’s Easter fountains. The Evangelical St.-Veit- und St.-Michaels-Kirche (church) goes back to a former tithe barn. The freestanding belltower stands on what is left of a former castle. Unusual for an Evangelical church is the elaborate Baroque painting on the wooden galleries and the panelled ceilings.

Feuerstein Castle (German: Burg Feuerstein) lies at the edge of the so-called Lange Meile near Ebermannstadt in the county of Forchheim in the south German state of Bavaria. It was built in 1941 by Oskar Vierling as a laboratory for researching High Frequency technology and electroacoustics and was used until 1945 by 250 employees for research into weapons and communication technology as part of the German armaments programme during the Second World War. At the end of the war the castle was seized by American soldiers, from 1946 it was rented by the Archdiocese of Bamberg under Jupp Schneider and sold in 1949. Since then the castle and the entire estate have been in use as a Roman Catholic youth and conference centre.

Schloss Greifenstein is a castle in the mountainous Fraconian Switzerland (Fränkische Schweiz) region of Upper Franconia, Germany. Since 1691 Greifenstein, the "stone stronghold" of Heiligenstadt round its walls, is the seat of the noble Schenk von Stauffenberg family. Greifenstein is a prominent feature of the modern tourist itinerary called the Burgenstraße (Castle Road).The Gothic castle that was first noted in 1172 was ruined and pillaged during the Peasants' war of 1524-1525 and was subsequently rebuilt. Then Marquard Sebastian von Schenk von Stauffenberg, Prince-Bishopric of Bamberg, took possession and rebuilt Greifenstein in Baroque style from 1691 to 1693, under the direction of the Bavarian architect Leonhard Dientzenhofer; consequently, as a seat of the bishop it is sometimes called Greifenstein Palais, though the aofficial bishop's palace stood (and still stands) in Bamberg. The Prince-Bishop inscribed over his gate a Latin motto taken from Luke 6:19: "for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all." The assemblage of arms and armor are outstanding. A comprehensive restoration was carried out by Otto Philipp Schenk, Graf von Stauffenberg, in 1975–77.
