Baars is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Overijssel. It is located in the municipality Steenwijkerland, about 4 km northwest of the town of Steenwijk. It was first mentioned in 1340 as Baersdijc, and refers to a farm named Baers which is the Dutch word for the European perch. It is a statistical entity, and has its own postal code. It used to have place name signs, but they have been removed again. The hamlet shares resources with neighbouring Witte Paarden.

Steenwijk is a railway station in Steenwijk, Netherlands. The station opened on 15 January 1868 and is on the Arnhem–Leeuwarden railway. Train services are operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen.

Zuidveen (Dutch Low Saxon: Zuudvene) is a Dutch village just south of Steenwijk in the municipality of Steenwijkerland. It forms a single urban area with Steenwijk.

Steenwijkerland (Dutch pronunciation: [steːɱˌʋɛikərˈlɑnt] ; Dutch Low Saxon: Stienwiekerlaand or Steenwiekerlaand) is a municipality in the province of Overijssel, in the eastern Netherlands. Prior to a name change in 2003, it was known as Steenwijk. The municipality forms the entire northwesterly corner of the province. This area is called "the Head of Overijssel" (in Dutch: de Kop van Overijssel). It borders the province Friesland. The seat of the municipality, Steenwijk, with a population of about 17,100, is situated on the A32 motorway (Zwolle – Meppel – Leeuwarden) and has a railway station on the line connecting those same cities.

De Hoeve is a village in the Dutch municipality of Weststellingwerf in Friesland. It is located in an agriculture area between Wolvega and Noordwolde. De Hoeve has approximately 410 inhabitants (2017).

The Kop van Overijssel (English: Head of Overijssel) is a region in the very northwestern part of the Dutch province of Overijssel. It consists of the municipality of Steenwijkerland and matches the historical region of the Land van Vollenhove. In past times it comprised a wider area, the municipalities of Kampen, Zwartewaterland and Staphorst also belonging to it. The Kop van Overijssel has about 43,000 inhabitants and an area of about 322 km2, of which a tenth is water. The 'capital' is Steenwijk. The region is nearly surrounded by three provincial borders: in the west that of Flevoland (Noordoostpolder region), in the north that of Friesland (Stellingwerven region) and in the east that of Drenthe (the municipalities of Westerveld and Meppel). In the south it borders on Salland, another region of Overijssel. In the is a marsh of about 60 km2, Nationaal Park Weerribben-Wieden. It is a national park that contains the lakes Beulakerwijde and Belterwijde.

Nijensleek is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Westerveld, and lies about 5 km north of Steenwijk. The village was first mentioned in 1402 as Nyensleker bure, and means "new natural stream". Nijensleek is a road village which developed in the Late Middle Ages as a peat excavation settlement.Nijensleek was home to 363 people in 1840. In 1934, a Reformed Church was built as an aisleless church with ridge turret.

Wilhelminaoord is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Westerveld, and lies about 26 km northwest of Hoogeveen. Wilhelminaoord was one of the farming colonies established by the Society of Benevolence in 1821 to decrease poverty by providing sustainable employment for able-bodied poor people. Along with the other colonies constructed by the Society, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2021 because of its testimony to a unique method of housing reform and its urban planning. The settlement was named after Wilhelmina of Prussia.The Colony Church is a Dutch Reformed church which dates from 1853. Attendance used to be mandatory. In 2009, it was decommissioned and is nowadays used for weddings, conferences and parties.

Havelterberg is a village in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It lies on the border of the municipalities Meppel and Westerveld, and lies about 21 km west of Hoogeveen.
