Stratheden Hospital

Stratheden (Gaelic: Srath Aodainn) is a hamlet 2 miles west of Cupar, and just north of Springfield, in Fife, Scotland. Stratheden Hospital was built as the Fife and Kinross District Lunatic Asylum in July 1866. It has also been known as Cupar Asylum and Springfield Asylum; it has been called Stratheden Hospital since January 1949, after the creation of the National Health Service. Stratheden Cottages were originally built as housing for the hospital staff.The Scott's Porage Oats factory is located nearby, as is Elmwood Farm, the first fully organic farm in Scotland. The Scottish Deer Centre is located just to the west. Stratheden is located within the Church of Scotland parish of Ceres, Kemback and Springfield.

Springfield is a village that lies at the edge of the Howe of Fife, to the south-west of the town of Cupar, Fife, Scotland. The origin of the community is thought to be from the linen industry in the 19th century. The Church of Scotland parish church was built in 1861, and now shares a minister with nearby Ceres and Kemback. The church garden was originally intended to be a cemetery, but the high water table prevented this. The community is surrounded by fields; agriculture is still an important part of the economy of north east Fife (although few Springfield residents work in agriculture). After World War II, a considerable number of council houses were built in the village, creating new communities in Crawley Crescent, Tarvit Terrace and several other streets. Many of these local authority-owned houses have since been bought by their former tenants. One of the largest local employers is Stratheden Hospital, a psychiatric hospital located between Springfield and Cupar. Springfield has a pub, shop, parish church, village hall, primary school and a railway station on the Edinburgh to Aberdeen Line. The actress Agnes Fraser (1876–1968) was born here.

Cupar Muir or Cuparmuir is a hamlet or small village situated just outside the town of Cupar, Fife. Lying around 25.5 miles (41 km) north of Edinburgh, it had a population of around 229 in 2011.The settlement was primarily developed around quarrying of stone, but is better known for a 1559 confrontation between the French troops of Mary of Guise and the Protestant forces of the Lords of the Congregation.

Balgarvie Castle was located at Balgarvie, near Cupar in Fife, Scotland. The castle was sacked by an English army led by Sir John Pettsworth during the reign of Robert the Bruce (1306–1329). Balgarvie was a possession of the Balfours of Burleigh, and was later sold to the Earl of Melville. It was demolished circa 1938–1940, and there are no remains surviving.

Bell Baxter High School is a non-denominational comprehensive school for 11 to 18 year olds in Cupar, Fife, Scotland. Founded in 1889, it educates over 1,500 pupils mainly from the surrounding villages. The school is one of 18 secondary schools under the authority of Fife Council, and is led by rector Lynn Black with the support of a senior leadership team. Bell Baxter takes its name from donors Dr Andrew Bell, creator of the Madras system, and businessman Sir David Baxter. The school's history can be traced back to institutions dating from around 1635.

The Scottish Deer Centre is a 55-acre (22 ha) zoological park near Cupar in Fife, Scotland. The attraction is set on the estate of Over Rankeilour, at the former Over Rankeilour Farm close to the hamlet of the Bow of Fife. Opened in 1988 by the farm's owners, the centre attracted over 70,000 visitors in 2019, making it Fife's second most popular paid attraction behind St Andrews Castle. While opened primarily as a working deer farm with entertainment for the public, it now focuses on conservation, education and research as a member of BIAZA.The Scottish Deer Centre is home to 12 species of deer, as well as wolves, wildcats, bears, otters and local wildlife. It also contains a bird of prey centre which offers daily shows, tours and experiences. A cafe, gift shop, and several activities such as go-karting are also available.

Pitlessie is a small village in Cults, Fife, Scotland. It is roughly 4+1⁄2 miles (7 km) southwest of the nearest large town, Cupar, and 23 miles (37 kilometres) north of Edinburgh. It had an estimated population of 325 in 2010.Situated in the heart of the Howe of Fife, the village was mainly concerned with the linen industry and agriculture - the primary employers in many villages in the along the River Eden. Pitlessie's roots can be traced back at least as far as the 13th century, with it being created twice a free burgh of barony. Other industries such as mining and malting also employed many in the village, though these, along with the post office and village shop, have since ceased. Now, based along the A914, the village primarily serves commuters employed in the surrounding towns and cities, with a village inn the sole notable amenity of Pitlessie, attracting tourists and locals alike.
