Brocken-Hochharz (German pronunciation: [ˌbʁɔkŋ̍ˈhoːxhaːɐ̯ts]) was a Verwaltungsgemeinschaft ("collective municipality") in the district of Harz, in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It was situated in the Harz mountains, southwest of Wernigerode. It was named after the highest peak of the Harz: Brocken. The seat of the Verwaltungsgemeinschaft was in Hasselfelde. It was disbanded on 1 January 2010. The Verwaltungsgemeinschaft Brocken-Hochharz consisted of the following municipalities: Allrode Benneckenstein Elend Hasselfelde Sorge Stiege Tanne

The Hassel Auxiliary Dam or Hassel Dam (German: Hasselvorsperre or Vorsperre Hassel) is an auxiliary dam or pre-dam on the Rappbode Reservoir in the Harz mountains of central Germany. It is located near Hasselfelde in the state of Saxony-Anhalt and impounds the waters of the Hassel, the eastern of the two headwaters of the Rappbode Reservoir. Together with its auxiliary dams, the reservoir supplies drinking water and is owned by the Saxony-Anhalt Dam Company (Talsperrenbetrieb Sachsen-Anhalt). The purpose of the auxiliary dam is to pre-clean water mechanically and biologically before it flows into the main reservoir. Water can be collected from various heights and diverted to the reservoir. The barrier itself is a 21 m high gravity dam. The bedrock consists mostly of grauwacke, but with some thinly laminated argillaceous shale as well. There is a circular path around the Hassel Auxiliary Dam. The crest of the dam is accessible to pedestrians and the lake may be fished provided permission is obtained. The Hassel Auxiliary Dam is checkpoint no. 53 in the Harzer Wandernadel hiking trail network.

Stiege is a village and a former municipality in the district of Harz, in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Since 1 January 2010, it is part of the town Oberharz am Brocken. Stiege has 1083 inhabitants (1-1-2010).

The Rappbode Dam (German: Rappbode-Talsperre) is the largest dam in the Harz region as well as the highest dam in Germany. Together with several other dams and retention basins, it forms the flood protection system for the eastern Harz.

Oberharz am Brocken (German pronunciation: [ˌoːbɐhaːɐ̯ts ʔam ˈbʁɔkŋ̍]) is a town in the Harz District, in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It was formed on 1 January 2010 by the merger of the town of Elbingerode with the municipalities of the former Verwaltungsgemeinschaft ("collective municipality") Brocken-Hochharz (except for Allrode).The name chosen by the new town's administration has caused some disturbance, as the area is not part of the Upper Harz region, which traditionally refers to the seven mining towns (Bergstädte) of Clausthal, Zellerfeld, Andreasberg, Altenau, Lautenthal, Wildemann, and Grund, all located in the neighbouring state of Lower Saxony. A lawsuit filed by the Lower Saxon Samtgemeinde ("collective municipality") Oberharz in 2009 was dismissed by the Saxony-Anhalt administrative court in Magdeburg.

The Hassel is a river of Saxony-Anhalt, in the East Harz Mountains in Germany. It flows through several municipalities including Stiege and the town of Hasselfelde. Its source is located not far from Stiege. After about 10 kilometres (6 mi) it flows into the Hassel Auxiliary Dam and later into the Rappbode Reservoir.

The Rappbode Auxiliary Dam (German: Rappbodevorsperre) is one of the two auxiliary dams in the Rappbode Dam system. This is the heart of the Rappbode Dam system in the East Harz, which is operated by the Saxony-Anhalt Dam Company (Talsperrenbetrieb des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt) and which also includes the Hassel Auxiliary Dam and the Königshütte, Mandelholz and Wendefurth dams. The Rappbode Auxiliary Dam near Trautenstein is used, together with the main dam, for supplying drinking water and for flood protection. The auxiliary dam impounds the River Rappbode. It has a 25 m high gravity dam. The area around the Rappbode Auxiliary Dam is well-suited to walking. Its eastern shore is dominated by numerous rocky crags. On the most important lakeside rocks, where today the reservoir and, formerly, the Rappbode river makes a small bend, there was once a castle, the Trageburg, which, like the Susenburg not far away, was used to guard an old long-distance trade route.

The Trageburg is a ruined castle immediately next to the Rappbode Pre-Dam in the Harz Mountains of Germany. It is located near Trautenstein in the district of Harz in Saxony-Anhalt. Its purpose, like that of the nearby Susenburg, was to protect an old long-distance trade route that ran north–south over the Harz. The Trogfurth Bridge also belonged to this road system. The Trageburg is checkpoint no. 52 in the Harzer Wandernadel hiking badge system.
