Poestenkill is a town in Rensselaer County, New York, United States. The population was 4,322 at the 2020 census. The town is southeast of Troy and is centrally located in the county. The town is named after the Poesten Kill, an important stream in the area. The phrase poesten kil (with only one l) is traditionally said to be Dutch for "foaming water" or "foaming creek". While kil is, indeed, Dutch for "water" or "creek", Dutch dictionaries do not support the claim of poest meaning "foam". It seems more likely that the creek was named after the nickname Poest for the 17th-century local farmer and miller Jan Barentsen Wemp, who had a pimple (poest) or had difficulty breathing (poesten = to breathe); he owned a farm and a mill on the Poestenkil creek.Among the earliest settlers in the town was Archelaus Lynd. He leased 300 acres of land from the Van Rensselaers and made his first clearing in the area of Hillside Cemetery, which was known as The Lynd Cemetery until about 1900. The Whyland and Ives families were other early settlers.

Albert R. Fox House, also known as the Fox Mansion, is a historic home located at Sand Lake in Rensselaer County, New York. It was built about 1847 and is a large Greek Revival style frame dwelling. It consists of a two-story, five-bay-wide and four-bay-deep main block, flanked by one-story, two-bay-wide wings. There is also a large two-story rear wing. It features a full-width, one-story open porch with Ionic order columns supporting a deep entablature. Also on the property are a contributing fountain (c. 1860) and two small 19th-century sheds.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.

Sand Lake Baptist Church is a historic Baptist church at 2960 State Route 43 in Averill Park, Rensselaer County, New York. The church was built in 1805 and is a Federal period frame building. It is a rectangular, two-story, heavy wood-frame building set on a stone foundation. The church has a gable roof and features a two-stage, semi-engaged Greek Revival style tower added in 1840. The front facade features a Palladian window. Also on the property is a contributing parsonage (1846) and garage (1939).The church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Averill Park is a census-designated place within the town of Sand Lake in Rensselaer County, New York, United States. The population was 2,098 at the 2020 census. The community is named after the local Averill family. It is located on Route 43, south of Crystal Lake and east of West Sand Lake. The Sand Lake Baptist Church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Marsh–Link–Pollock Farm, also known as the Pollock Farm, is a historic home and farm located at Brunswick, Rensselaer County, New York. The farmhouse was built about 1840, and is a two-story, "L"-plan, Greek Revival style timber frame dwelling with a one-story rear ell. The original section was expanded in the 1920s to its present size. Also on the property are the contributing main barn, a small light-frame barn that was used for calves and a concrete block cow barn with a silo (c. 1959).: 3–5 It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.

Brunswick (Brittonkill) Central School District (BCSD) is a rural fringe central school district located east of the city of Troy whose main campus resides in the town of Brunswick in Rensselaer County, New York, United States. The district has two operating school buildings: Tamarac Elementary School (Pre-K through 5) and Tamarac Secondary School (6 through 12). The district is a member of the Rensselaer-Columbia-Greene Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), known as Questar III. The district was created upon the centralization (consolidation) of fourteen smaller districts in Brunswick, Pittstown, Grafton, and Poestenkill in 1956 and the high school opened in 1958. The first class graduated in 1960. The district had a combined student body of 1363 during the 2007–2008 school year.

Clums Corners is a hamlet in the town of Brunswick in Rensselaer County, New York, United States. It is located at the intersection of New York Route 2 (Brunswick Road), New York Route 278 (Brick Church Road), and Tamarac Road (County Route 129). Tamarac Secondary and Elementary Schools are located nearby. The site is so named for the Clum family—specifically James Clum and later his son Orlin—who ran a blacksmith shop during the late 19th century and early 20th century.The area was serviced by the Little Red Schoolhouse—known officially as the Brunswick District No. 6 Schoolhouse—until it was closed in 1958, upon the consolidation of Brunswick (Brittonkill) Central School District and the opening of Tamarac School.The area was mostly farmland until the building of the school on the north side of Route 2 and then the strip mall Tamarac Plaza, the former King Fuel's gas station (now Cobble Pond), and the Rensselaer County Association for Retarded Children were built on the south side. Prior to this development, the area was known as Clum's Flats and was a popular place to race horses on Sunday afternoons.
