Albert R. Fox House, also known as the Fox Mansion, is a historic home located at Sand Lake in Rensselaer County, New York. It was built about 1847 and is a large Greek Revival style frame dwelling. It consists of a two-story, five-bay-wide and four-bay-deep main block, flanked by one-story, two-bay-wide wings. There is also a large two-story rear wing. It features a full-width, one-story open porch with Ionic order columns supporting a deep entablature. Also on the property are a contributing fountain (c. 1860) and two small 19th-century sheds.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.

Poestenkill is a town in Rensselaer County, New York, United States. The population was 4,322 at the 2020 census. The town is southeast of Troy and is centrally located in the county. The town is named after the Poesten Kill, an important stream in the area. The phrase poesten kil (with only one l) is traditionally said to be Dutch for "foaming water" or "foaming creek". While kil is, indeed, Dutch for "water" or "creek", Dutch dictionaries do not support the claim of poest meaning "foam". It seems more likely that the creek was named after the nickname Poest for the 17th-century local farmer and miller Jan Barentsen Wemp, who had a pimple (poest) or had difficulty breathing (poesten = to breathe); he owned a farm and a mill on the Poestenkil creek.Among the earliest settlers in the town was Archelaus Lynd. He leased 300 acres of land from the Van Rensselaers and made his first clearing in the area of Hillside Cemetery, which was known as The Lynd Cemetery until about 1900. The Whyland and Ives families were other early settlers.

The county is named in honor of the family of Kiliaen van Rensselaer, the original Dutch owner of the land in the area. Rensselaer County is part of the Albany-Schenectady-Troy, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Sand Lake Baptist Church is a historic Baptist church at 2960 State Route 43 in Averill Park, Rensselaer County, New York. The church was built in 1805 and is a Federal period frame building. It is a rectangular, two-story, heavy wood-frame building set on a stone foundation. The church has a gable roof and features a two-stage, semi-engaged Greek Revival style tower added in 1840. The front facade features a Palladian window. Also on the property is a contributing parsonage (1846) and garage (1939).The church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

The Barberville Falls is a waterfall and nature preserve located in Poestenkill, New York. The fall flows into the Poesten Kill, which is a large creek that flows through Rensselaer County.

Averill Park is a census-designated place within the town of Sand Lake in Rensselaer County, New York, United States. The population was 2,098 at the 2020 census. The community is named after the local Averill family. It is located on Route 43, south of Crystal Lake and east of West Sand Lake. The Sand Lake Baptist Church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Cherry Plain State Park is a 175-acre (0.71 km2) state park located in Rensselaer County, New York in the United States. The park is located in Cherry Plain at the southwest part of the Town of Berlin, near the Massachusetts border. Outdoor recreational opportunities are also available within the Capital District Wildlife Management Area, a 4,153-acre (16.81 km2) conservation area that nearly surrounds the park.

Poestenkill is a hamlet (and census-designated place) in Rensselaer County, New York, United States. The population was 1,061 at the 2010 census. The name is taken from Poesten Kill, a stream in the area. Poestenkill is in the southern part of the Town of Poestenkill.

Dyken Pond is a 134-acre (54 ha) lake in the towns of Grafton and Berlin in Rensselaer County, New York. The pond gets water primarily from precipitation and outflows westward into the Poesten Kill, a tributary of the Hudson River. It is located in northwest Berlin, south of Grafton Lakes State Park. Dyken Pond is 1.4 miles (2.3 km) long with a shoreline length of 5.1 miles (8.2 km); its maximum depth is 35 feet (11 m) with an average depth of 16 feet (4.9 m). It sits at an elevation of 1,625 feet (495 m).Formerly a small pond, Dyken Pond was enlarged to its current size in 1902 after a dam was built to regulate water power and reduce flooding. The dam was constructed by the Manning Paper Company, who later donated their land holdings in the vicinity of the pond to Rensselaer County in 1973. That land became part of the Dyken Pond Environmental Education Center, a 594-acre (2.40 km2) property that is accessible to the public for the purpose of outdoor education and low-impact recreation.The pond facilitates fishing for chain pickerel and panfish, and ice fishing is permitted.

Marsh–Link–Pollock Farm, also known as the Pollock Farm, is a historic home and farm located at Brunswick, Rensselaer County, New York. The farmhouse was built about 1840, and is a two-story, "L"-plan, Greek Revival style timber frame dwelling with a one-story rear ell. The original section was expanded in the 1920s to its present size. Also on the property are the contributing main barn, a small light-frame barn that was used for calves and a concrete block cow barn with a silo (c. 1959).: 3–5 It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.

The Dewey Loeffel Landfill is an EPA superfund site located in Rensselaer County, New York. In the 1950s and 1960s, several companies including General Electric, Bendix Corporation and Schenectady Chemicals used the site as a disposal facility for more than 46,000 tons of industrial hazardous wastes, including solvents, waste oils, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), scrap materials, sludges and solids. Some hazardous substances, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and PCBs, have migrated from the facility to underlying aquifers and downstream surface water bodies, resulting in contamination of groundwater, surface water, sediments and several species of fish. There is currently a ban on fish consumption in Nassau Lake and the impacted tributaries. Site investigations are underway to determine the nature and extent of the contamination and inform the development of permanent cleanup options for the site. In 1986, Schenectady Chemicals agreed that it would pay $496,500 toward the cleanup effort.
