City Hall (Cambridge, Massachusetts)

The City Hall Historic District is a historic district (United States) encompassing buildings important in the early growth of the Central Square area of Cambridge, Massachusetts. The focal point of the district is the monumental Richardsonian Romanesque Cambridge City Hall building on the north side of Massachusetts Avenue, two block west of the heart of the square. It also includes four buildings in the block just east of city hall, which is bounded by Bigelow and Temple Streets, Inman and Richard Allen Drives. City Hall was built in 1888 to a design by Longfellow, Alden & Harlow. Other buildings in the district include the Syrian Orthodox Catholic Church, built in 1822 and moved to 8 Inman Street from Lafayette Square in 1888, the 1888 Cambridge Mutual Fire Insurance Building at 763 Mass. Avenue, the 1912 Cambridge Electric Light Company Building at 719 Mass. Avenue, and the 1910 Cambridge YWCA at 7 Temple Street.The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. In 1990, all of the district was also included in the larger Central Square Historic District.

The Clifton Merriman Post Office Building, also known as the U.S. Post Office-Central Square is an historic post office at 770 Massachusetts Avenue within Central Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The post office was built in 1933 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 as "U.S. Post Office-Central Square". In 1992, the United States Congress passed a bill renaming it for Clifton Merriman, an African-American World War I veteran who later became assistant superintendent of the main Post Office in Cambridge.

The Bigelow Street Historic District encompasses a uniform collection of 19th century houses on most of the length of Bigelow Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts, just northwest of Central Square. Bigelow Street was laid out in 1868, and the street was almost completely built out by 1874, resulting in a fairly uniform streetscape of Second Empire architecture. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The George Gale House is a historic double house in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The three story frame house was built in 1858 by father and son, George T. Gale and George ?. Gale. They owned a lumberyard together in Kendall Square. The building at 14-16 Clinton Street is unusual as a double house in the Italianate style. It has typical Italianate features, including a central gable on the front facade, an elaborately decorated front porch and deep eaves with brackets all around. It is distinctively sheathed in flushboarding, giving the appearance of stone.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988 to preserve the existing structure and in recognition of the innovative practices of the Gales. Their lumberyard, located in Kendall Square was the first to bring a spur of the rail system into the lumberyard to facilitate delivery of lumber at a time when Cambridge was growing.

The buildings at 15–17 Lee Street are a historic double house in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame house was built in 1856, and is a rare local instance of an Italianate duplex. It has paired arched windows on the first floor, a richly decorated front porch, and an extended cornice. The corners of the first two floors have quoining, and the half story above alternates small windows and panels with balusters.The houses were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The First Baptist Church is a historic American Baptist church at Magazine and River Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts within Central Square. In 1817 the church congregation was founded in the home of James Hovey. In 1844 several members of First Baptist Church left to found nearby Old Cambridge Baptist Church. First Baptist Church's current Gothic building was constructed in 1881 to a design by Hartwell and Richardson. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Carl Barron Plaza is a plaza in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States. The space is named after Carl Barron, who has been described as "a Central Square icon" and "a fixture in Cambridge". His office was located near the plaza.

The Urban Rowhouse is an historic residential rowhouse located at 26–32 River Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts. These rowhouses were built in 1860 by Frederick Clapp, and are among the earliest surviving examples of the type in the city. They feature a combination of brick and brownstone masonry, but also with some trim made out of wood that has been treated to appear like brownstone. They bear some resemblance to rowhouses built at the same time in Boston's South End.The rowhouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

ImprovBoston is a nonprofit improvisational theater, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It offers shows five nights per week at its theater in Central Square and training programs in improvisation, stand-up comedy and sketchwriting.

Opposition House is an historic double house in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The two story hip-roofed wood-frame house was built in 1807 by Judge Francis Dana, who was seeking to prevent the laying of Harvard Street across his estate, making it a kind of spite house. Dana's efforts were unsuccessful; the road was routed around this house, which he had sited along the intended route. The house was moved to its present location in the 1860s. It is the oldest surviving house on Dana Hill.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Cambridge Zen Center is an urban meditation center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, close to Harvard University, part of the Kwan Um School of Zen. Free meditation training and dharma talks are offered to the public and the Zen Center also provides a large (30-35 people) residential training program.

The Ephraim Atwood House is an historic house at 110 Hancock Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Built in 1839, it is a significant local example of transitional Greek Revival/Gothic Revival architecture, and one of the earliest houses built after the subdivision of Dana Hill. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 30, 1983.
