Chalton Windmill

Windmill Hill is a chalk hill running alongside the A3(M) in the East Hampshire district of Hampshire, England, overlooking Chalton to the east, and Clanfield to the west. It measures 193 metres above sea level and is named so because of Chalton Windmill which sits upon its summit. This windmill is a Grade II listed building which lay derelict until the late 1970s, when it was restored and converted into a private residence.On its northern slopes at Bascomb Copse sits Butser Ancient Farm, which moved there in 1991. The hill has numerous footpaths some of which lead to the small village of Blendworth and then to Horndean to the south, and Queen Elizabeth Country Park and Butser Hill, which is well within walking distance to the north.

Butser Ancient Farm is an archaeological open-air museum and experimental archaeology site located near Petersfield in Hampshire, southern England. Butser features experimental reconstructions of prehistoric, Romano-British and Anglo-Saxon buildings. Examples of Neolithic dwellings, Iron Age roundhouses, a Romano-British villa and an early Saxon house are on display. The site is used as both a tourist attraction and a site for the undertaking of experimental archaeology. In this latter capacity, it was designed so that archaeologists could learn more about the agricultural and domestic economy in Britain during the millennium that lasted from circa 400 BCE to 400 CE, in what was the Late British Iron Age and Romano-British periods.Founded in 1970 by the Council for British Archaeology, in 1972 they recruited experimental archaeologist Peter J. Reynolds to run the site as project director. It was initially located on the site of a Bronze and Iron Age farmstead on Butser Hill, but in 1989 relocated to Hillscombe Down, and in 1991 to Bascombe Copse on the slopes of Windmill Hill. The farm is open to the public and runs various events throughout the year. Archaeologist Mick Aston commented that "Virtually all the reconstruction drawings of Iron Age settlements now to be seen in books are based" on the work at Butser Farm, and that it "revolutionised the way in which the pre-Roman Iron Age economy was perceived".

Chalton is a small village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Clanfield, in the East Hampshire district of Hampshire, England. It is 2.3 miles (3.7 km) north-east of Horndean and just east of the A3. The nearest railway station is 3.1 miles (5 km) south of the village, at Rowlands Castle. In 1931 the parish had a population of 158. On 1 April 1932 the parish was abolished and merged with Clanfield, part also went to form Rowlands Castle.

Blendworth is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Horndean, in the East Hampshire district of Hampshire, England. It lies 0.4 miles (0.6 km) northeast of Horndean just east off the A3 road. The village has a population of fewer than 100 people, in 1931 the parish had a population of 398. On 1 April 1932 the parish was abolished and merged with Horndean, Rowlands Castle and Havant. The church, Holy Trinity, was erected in 1850–51, and until recently had a C of E Infant School next to it. Blendworth also has a brass band. and had stables until 2022 when all the land belonging to Myrtle Farm - which included the stables - was sold. The nearest railway station is 2.2 miles (3.5 km) southeast of the village, at Rowlands Castle. The village is also close to Chalton, Finchdean and Rowlands Castle.

Oxenbourne Down, Clanfield is a 84.8-hectare (210-acre) Local Nature Reserve north of Clanfield in Hampshire. It is owned and managed by Hampshire County Council. It is part of Butser Hill, which is a Special Area of Conservation and Site of Special Scientific Interest.This is part of Queen Elizabeth Country Park. It has unimproved grassland on low fertility soils, which is controlled by grazing. There are also areas of ancient semi-natural woodland.

Queen Elizabeth Country Park is a large country park situated on the South Downs in southern England. It is located on the A3 road three miles south of Petersfield, Hampshire and lies within the South Downs National Park. The park contains 1,400 acres (6 km2) of open access woodland and downland within the East Hampshire Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, including Butser Hill (886 ft), the highest point on the South Downs, and War Down (801 ft). The woodland was mostly planted in the 1930s; it consists mainly of beech trees. Several Long-distance footpaths run through the park including Staunton Way, Hangers Way and the South Downs Way bridleway. On a clear day the Isle of Wight can be seen from the top of Butser Hill. The park also contains several waymarked and graded mountain biking trails. These are designed, built and maintained by volunteers. The Queen Elizabeth Country Park parkrun takes place within the park each Saturday. To the east of the forest, south of the village of Buriton lies the wooded hill of Head Down (205 m), which "is an area that caters for clubs that require land with privacy for outdoor recreational activities, such as archery or off-road vehicles."Every July the Queen Elizabeth Country Park is the start point for Oxfam's biggest annual fundraising event, Trailwalker UK.The Queen Elizabeth Country Park and the Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda are twinned in a project of "cultural exchange, mutual support and has its main emphasis on supporting Conservation through working closely with and empowering local communities".

Clanfield is a village and civil parish in the south-east of the East Hampshire district of Hampshire, England. It is situated 2.4 miles (3.9 kilometres) north of Horndean, 12 mi (19 km) north of Portsmouth and 6 mi (10 km) south of Petersfield. It sits to the west of the main A3 road, just north of where the A3(M) (Motorway) ends.The surrounding villages are Horndean, Catherington, Hinton Daubney, Chalton, East Meon, and Hambledon It has a semi-rural character with 3 sides of the village being adjoined by fields including Queen Elizabeth Country Park. Clanfield is overlooked from the other side of the A3 road by Windmill Hill and Chalton Windmill which stands at 193 metres above sea level. Many references in Clanfield feature the windmill, such as Windmill Garage.The population of Clanfield is c. 4,854 (estimated 2011), however property development and new homes since the 2011 census means that this is expected to have increased and was estimated to be over 6000 in 2017 Clanfield is a popular area for walkers, with Queen Elizabeth Country Park being next to the village. The old village also has a restored pond, a thatched village well, the Clanfield memorial hall, and the church of St. James.Clanfield consists of two parts, "Old" Clanfield and "New" Clanfield. Old Clanfield has been around for roughly 250 years and New Clanfield about 60 years. There are two schools. Petersgate Infant in New Clanfield and Clanfield Junior School in Old Clanfield. Horndean is a village and civil parish in Hampshire, England, 8 miles (13 km) north of Portsmouth. The nearest railway station is 2.2 miles (3.5 km) southeast of the village at Rowlands Castle. The village had a population of 12,942 at the 2011 Census, and shares the semi-rural character of others in the district. The village was the home of Gales Brewery from 1850. In 2005, it was bought by Fuller, Smith and Turner, who closed it in 2006, when it was converted to shops and flats.

Woodcroft Halt railway station was a former railway halt located in the parish of Buriton between Rowlands Castle and Petersfield on the Portsmouth Direct Line.

Catherington is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Horndean, in the East Hampshire district of Hampshire, England. It is 1 mile (1.8 km) northwest of Horndean. The village is also close to Cowplain and Clanfield. It is situated about 10 miles north of Portsmouth and eight miles south of Petersfield, in the very south of the district of East Hampshire. It has a semi-rural character. Catherington is not a very large village and has an approximate population of 3900 (estimated 1998). The village is a conservation area.

Horndean F.C. is an English football club based in Horndean, near Portsmouth in Hampshire. The club are currently members of the Isthmian League South East Division and play at the Stanley Chase Stadium on Five Heads Road, Horndean.

At 244 metres (801 ft), War Down is one of the highest hills in the county of Hampshire, England and the second highest summit in the Hampshire part of the South Downs. Just 1 kilometre to the northwest is the South Downs' highest point at Butser Hill (270 m). Much of the hill is covered in mixed forest and there is a trig point at 244 metres. There is a forest track over the summit. It is located in the Queen Elizabeth Country Park.
