Southern High Rhön

At 927.9 m above sea level (NN) the Dammersfeldkuppe in Bavaria is the second highest mountain after the Wasserkuppe (950.2 m above NN; Hessen) in the Rhön, a low mountain range straddling the states of Bavaria, Hesse and Thuringia in Germany.

The Dammersfeld Ridge (German: Dammersfeldrücken) is a low mountain chain in the High Rhön in Germany, which begins on a line from Bischofsheim to Gersfeld and runs in a southwesterly direction to Riedenberg – Werberg – Maria Ehrenberg. The majority of this area today is a military out-of-bounds area, the Wildflecken Training Area. Its highest point is the Dammersfeldkuppe, the second-highest mountain in the Rhön. The Bavarian-Hessian state border runs along the crest of the mountain chain.

The Beilstein is an extinct volcano in Hesse, Germany that is 864.6 m above sea level (NHN). It rises in the Rhön Mountains, a Mittelgebirge in the German states of Bavaria, Hesse and Thuringia. It lies in the High Rhön on the Bavarian-Hessian border, which locally forms the boundary between the town of Gersfeld in the Hessian county of Fulda (district) and the market town of Wildflecken in the Bavarian county of Bad Kissingen. On the mountain are parts of the Wildflecken Training Area and the Ludwigstein.

The Großer Auersberg is a mountain, 808.6 m above sea level (NN), in the Bavarian part of the Rhön mountains. It is located in an unparished area, 4.68 km² in area, in the county of Bad Kissingen, three kilometres southwest of the village centre of Wildflecken. The Großer Auersberg is covered by dense deciduous forest and lies within the Wildflecken Training Area, established in 1938. The entire terrain is a military out-of-bounds area, which civilians may not enter. A good two kilometres to the west-southwest rises the slightly less high Kleiner Auersberg. Neither should be confused with the Auersberg near Hilders in the Hessian part of the Rhön.

The Kleiner Auersberg is a mountain, 808 m above sea level (NN), in the Bavarian part of the Rhön mountains. It is situated five kilometres southwest of the centre of Wildflecken in the county of Bad Kissingen on the watershed between the Sinn and Kleiner Sinn. The Kleiner Auersberg is only partly wooded and its summit is thus a good viewing point. In good visibility the views extend as far as the Kreuzberg in the east, Dreistelzberg and Spessart in the southwest as far as the Vogelsberg in the northwest. In very good visibility the Taunus and the skyscrapers of Frankfurt am Main are visible. The Kleiner Auersberg lies within the Wildflecken Training Area, established in 1938. The entire terrain is a military out-of-bounds area. The only opportunity for civilians to climb the Kleiner Auersberg is on the two Volkswandertage ("people's walking days"), which take place annually on a summer weekend. Due to the good views, usually one of the prescribed routes leads to the summit. A good two kilometres east-northeast rises the slightly higher and densely wooded Großer Auersberg. Neither should be confused with the Auersberg near Hilders in the Hessian part of the Rhön.

Wildflecken is a municipality in the Bad Kissingen district, at the border of northwestern Bavaria and southern Hesse. In 2022, its population was 2,935; the postal code is 97772 (US Forces used APO NY 09026 until July 15, 1991, when APO/FPO/DPO addresses got their own "state" codes, when "NY" became "AE"). Wildflecken is in the picturesque Rhön Mountains.

The Fulda–Gersfeld Railway (German: Bahnstrecke Fulda–Gersfeld), also called the Rhön Railway (German: Rhönbahn), is a railway line in the state of Hesse, Germany. It connects Fulda in the west with Gersfeld, in the Rhön Mountains, in the east. The line was opened by the Prussian state railways on October 1, 1888 (1888-10-01), and as of November 2014 is operated by the Hessische Landesbahn using Alstom Coradia LINT 41 trainsets.

Gersfeld is a town in the district of Fulda, in Hesse, Germany. It is situated on the Fulda River, in the Rhön Mountains, 20 km (12.43 mi) southeast of Fulda. It belonged to the abbey-principality of Fulda before secularisation in 1803. It then belonged to the Principality of Nassau-Orange-Fulda between 1803 and 1806, to France between 1806 and 1810, and then later to the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt between 1810 and 1813. After the Battle of Leipzig, it was occupied by the Allied troops of the Sixth Coalition between 1813 and 1815. After that, it was ceded to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1815. During the Austro-Prussian War, it was occupied by Prussia before its annexation in the newly established Hesse Nassau province. It was finally incorporated in the state of Hesse in 1945.

Ebersburg Castle (Burg Ebersburg) is a ruined hill castle in Ebersberg in the parish of Ebersburg in the county of Fulda in East Hesse, Germany. It is the symbol of Ebersberg as well as the origin of its name. A castle built around 1100 was the basis of the subsequent structure. Around 1396, the castle was extended and expanded. As it never had its own castle well, it was not very suitable as a permanent residence and was finally abandoned in the 16th century. After the Thirty Years' War there was an attempt to occupy it again by building a half-timbered house but even that failed after a few years. In the 19th century, the ruin was on the territory of the old Weyhers District Court, which was part of the Kingdom of Bavaria. During that period one of its towers was converted into a lookout tower and the castle was restored for preservation reasons. Today it is owned by the State of Hesse. It is a protected cultural monument. The castle is accessible to visitors at any time. The key for the observation tower can be collected nearby. The authorities of the Hessian Rhön Nature Park have signposted the footpaths in the vicinity of the castle.

The Hochrhönring (also Hochrhön-Ring) is a 42-kilometre-long holiday route in the Hessian Rhön in Germany.The route, which opened in 1970, runs in a circle roughly east of Gersfeld past the Feldberg (815 m), the Wasserkuppe (950 m), Abtsroda, Dietges, the Milseburg (835 m), Kleinsassen, Wolferts, Poppenhausen and Gackenhof and back to Gersfeld.The route is signposted with signs that display the black lettering Hochrhönring on a white background, usually with a thistle on a dark green background (which is often rather faded). The route is popular with motorcyclists and is sometimes nicknamed "the Route 66 of the Rhön".
