Vellore Central Prison (established in 1830) is a prison in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India.It is the largest jail in the district and 2nd largest in Tamil Nadu after puzhal central prison, Convicts sentenced to imprisonment are confined in the jail from various districts of the Presidency as well as from Burma. Many prisoners sentenced to transpiration by the courts of this Presidency are retained when considered physically unfit for deportation to Andaman. The expenditure in the jail is recovered by the value of the convict labour. The chief industry carried out in the jail is weaving. A great variety of clothes of various patterns as well as table clothes, gunnies, choir mats, carpets etc. are woven. The central jail is famous for its carpets. The manufacture was first taught to the convicts by a carpet weaver of Ellore. The fabrics are woven and sold in England. Carpentry, shoe making, iron and brass work and tent making are also carried out.By extreme hard work and good conduct, convicts may earn a remission not exceeding 1/6 of the total period of imprisonment awarded them. There is a small sub jail attached to the central prison to accommodate the remand and under-trail prisoners of this dist. They will be sent to the concerned courts on the dates under Police Escorts. Voorhees College is a college in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India. It was founded in 1898 as Arcot Mission College, when Arcot Mission High School was amalgamated to the University of Madras. The college is named after its benefactors, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph and Elizabeth Voorhees of the Reformed Church in America. The College was earlier known as Ralph and Elizabeth Voorhees college when it was a Co-educational institution. In the late sixties towards the end of the tenure of Dr. A.N. Gopal, the then principal, the college stopped admitting women students and dropped the names Ralph and Elizabeth and became known as Voorhees College. The college began offering master's level courses in 1975. The College is managed by the Church of South India, Diocese of Vellore. The Chairman of the College is the Bishop of Vellore, and the motto is "In vain without God." Bakhiyath Salihath Arabic College (جامعة الباقيات الصالحات) or Jami'ah al Baqiyath as Salihat is an Islamic college in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India established in 1857. The madrasa was founded by Aa'la Hazrat Abdul Wahhab. He was one of the students of Bahrul uloom Saahibul Karaamaat Ash Sheikh Meer Amjad Ibrahim Chinna Hazrat, the second of Madurai Maqbara hazrats in Madurai. According to Viji and Yasir, "This Madrasa has acquired the status of a university. In view of pioneering role played by this institution in various foreign countries by teaching their citizens his seat of learning is rightly addressed as Islamic University and more appropriately as Umm ul_Madaris. Though the syllabus followed here is the universally recognized Nizamiah syllabus: it also provides exposure to English language as well as to Urdu (for non-Urdu speakers) keeping in view the demands of the time. This Madrasa has courses of graduation (Maulvi ‘Aalim) and post-graduation (Maulvi Fadhil) level. In addition, there are departments that offer specializations in Tasnif, Ta’lif, Tahqeeq and Tarjama (writing/editing/research and translation). Alumni of this institution have established haundreds of academic institutions not only within the country but also in alien lands. A few of them have acquired the status of universities."
