New Mills Urban District

New Mills is a town in the Borough of High Peak, Derbyshire, England, 8 miles (13 km) south-east of Stockport and 13 miles (21 km) from Manchester at the confluence of the River Goyt and Sett. It is close to the border with Cheshire and above the Torrs, a 70 feet (21 m) deep gorge cut through carboniferous sandstone, on the north-western edge of the Peak District national park. New Mills has a population of approximately 12,000, in a civil parish which includes the villages and hamlets of Whitle, Thornsett, Hague Bar, Rowarth, Brookbottom, Gowhole and Birch Vale. New Mills was first noted for coal mining, then for cotton spinning, bleaching and calico printing. It was served by the Peak Forest Canal, three railway lines and the A6 trunk road. Redundant mills were bought up in the mid-twentieth century by sweet manufacturer Swizzels Matlow. New Mills was a stronghold of Methodism.

Ripley was an Urban District in Derbyshire, England from 1894 to 1974. It was created under the Local Government Act 1894. The district was abolished in 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972 and combined with the Alfreton, Belper and Heanor Urban Districts and the Belper Rural District to form the new Amber Valley district.

New Mills Central railway station serves the town of New Mills in Derbyshire, England. It is on the Hope Valley Line between Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield, 12+3⁄4 miles (20.5 km) east of the former. The town is also served by New Mills Newtown station, which is on the Buxton to Stockport and Manchester line.

Torr Vale Mill is a Grade II* listed former cotton mill located in New Mills, Derbyshire, England, on a small rocky outcrop at the bottom of the Torrs gorge in a bend of the River Goyt. The mill was built in the late 1780s by Daniel Strafford and was known as Strafford's Mill. It was powered by two waterwheels to spin and weave cotton. It was rebuilt in 1856 and a steam engine was added. It continued to be driven by steam and water till the 1940s when electricity took over. It was still in use producing towelling products until December 2000, the longest continuous period of cotton production in the UK. Since 1998 there have been various plans by the new owner, Chemquip Ltd., to renovate and develop the mill. This is now well underway and the new events floor has been used extensively by the community for a wide range of events. The Torr Vale Mill Preservation Trust in May 2001 and The Princes Regeneration Trust has also been seeking a solution. In 2000 Torr Vale Mill was depicted on Royal Mail postage stamps to commemorate the Millennium Walkway in the Torrs Gorge. From this walkway, on the opposite side of the Gorge, dramatic views of the Mill may be had. In 2001 a fire destroyed one of the buildings of the mill. The mill remains in a lamentable state and, though now better secured, is at risk of further fire and vandalism. In 2010, Chad Bevan, a New Mills resident, won the Munro Trophy in the Derbyshire Open Arts Competition for his painting of the decaying Torr Vale Mill, the title being 'Lowes Mill'.The Mill is on the English Heritage Heritage at Risk Register of Listed Buildings at risk through disuse and disrepair. The local Heritage Centre Trust is actively engaged in trying to secure the future of this abandoned building.

This is a list of the cotton and other textile mills in Derbyshire, England. The first mills were built in the 1760s in the Derwent Valley by Arkwright and Strutt, and were powered by the water of the River Derwent. The abundance of water from the River Etherow and its tributaries led to mills being built in Longdendale and Glossopdale, and similarly along the River Wye in Millers Dale. As the industry developed, the mills changed hands, were demolished, were converted to use steam, or consolidated into larger units. They changed their names and their functions. Water-powered mills were smaller than the later steam-powered mills found in Greater Manchester. Parts of Derbyshire have been subsumed into Stockport.

New Mills Town Hall is a municipal building on Spring Bank, New Mills, Derbyshire, England. Constructed of local gritstone, it was opened in 1871 as a public hall for the Mechanics Institute, and became a town hall in 1895 upon the creation of New Mills Urban District Council, which used it as administrative headquarters until its 1974 abolition. It is now the seat of New Mills Town Council and a hireable community venue.

Newtown is an area of the town of New Mills in the High Peak borough of Derbyshire, England. It is situated west of New Mills proper, on the road to Disley. The county boundary between Cheshire and Derbyshire divides the area between the two counties. It entirely originally formed part of the parish of Disley and the county of Cheshire, and most of it became part of Derbyshire under the Local Government Act 1888 and a separate civil parish under the name 'Newtown'. The civil parish survived until 1934 when it was added to New Mills parish.Newtown is the site of New Mills Newtown railway station, which serves the town.

New Mills Newtown railway station serves the Peak District town of New Mills in Derbyshire, England. The station is 14+1⁄4 miles (22.9 km) south east of Manchester Piccadilly on the Manchester to Buxton line. It also serves as an interchange with the Hope Valley Line station New Mills Central, 15 minutes' walk away across the valley. It was built in 1857 on the Stockport, Disley and Whaley Bridge Railway line, which in 1863 was extended by the London and North Western Railway to connect with the Cromford and High Peak Railway and run to Buxton.

Torrs Hydro is a micro hydroelectric scheme, owned by the community, in New Mills, Derbyshire. It is on the River Goyt, immediately below its confluence with the River Sett at the Torr weir. A 2.4-metre diameter steel trough screw turbine generates up to 63 kW of electricity.

New Mills School & Sixth Form is a comprehensive school, situated in the town of New Mills, in the north west of Derbyshire.

Whitle is a historic hamlet in Derbyshire. The Whitle area is now part of the town of New Mills, and lies between the centre of the town and the hamlet of Thornsett. The main approach to the hamlet is via an unadopted road from the south, connecting with Apple Tree Road. This continues north-east as a public bridleway and private driveway to Mellor Road. Public footpaths lead north-west and WSW across New Mills Golf Course, which is immediately west of the hamlet.

New Mills Association Football Club ('The Millers') are an English football club based in New Mills, Derbyshire. They currently play in the North West Counties League Division One South.
