Salisbury was a local government district in Wiltshire, England from 1974 to 2009. Its main urban area was the city of Salisbury. The district was formed on 1 April 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972 and the English Non-metropolitan Districts (Definition) Order 1972, as a merger of the previous municipal boroughs of Salisbury and Wilton, along with Amesbury Rural District, Mere and Tisbury Rural District and Salisbury and Wilton Rural District.On 1 April 2009, the district was abolished as part of the structural changes to local government in England, when its functions were taken over by the new Wiltshire Council unitary authority. At the same time, a parish council for Salisbury and its suburbs was formed, called Salisbury City Council.

The Avon Valley Path is a long-distance path, opened in 1992, which runs for 34 miles (55 kilometres) through the English counties of Wiltshire, Hampshire and Dorset.The path takes its name from the River Avon. From Salisbury it passes through the towns of Fordingbridge and Ringwood as well as the villages of Odstock, Nunton, Charlton-All-Saints, Downton, Hale, Woodgreen, Turmer, Ibsley, Kingston, Sopley and Burton. It ends near the coast at Christchurch Priory, Dorset.The path is waymarked with green arrows featuring a bridge, and shown as a series of coloured diamonds on Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 maps. It can be walked in either direction. The path crosses the Clarendon Way and Castleman Trailway, and passes through the western edge of the New Forest. Parts of the route can become waterlogged, particularly from December to May.

Salisbury Playhouse is a theatre in the English city of Salisbury, Wiltshire. Built in 1976, it comprises the 517-seat Main House and the 149-seat Salberg Studio, a rehearsal room, a daytime café, and a community and education space. It is part of Arts Council England's National Portfolio of Organisations, and also receives regular funding from Wiltshire Council and Salisbury City Council.

Old Sarum Way is a 32-mile (51 km) long-distance footpath in Wiltshire, England that forms a circle around the city of Salisbury. The route uses public roads, public rights of way and some newly created permitted paths. Some sections of the footpath are waymarked by a metal plate attached to wooden posts which show a picture of the cathedral spire. This is the best guess of the route (clockwise) based on surviving waymarks: SU074337 Head down the hill on the footpath, under the railway line then across the river into South Newton. SU088344 Climb the hill, passing the communication tower and crossing the A360. SU124353 Join the Monarch's Way. SU167337 Turn south. SU162329 Turn east into Old Malthouse Lane. SU170330 Turn south onto the bridleway; the path crosses the A30 and passes south on the hill above Laverstock. SU160297 Join the Clarendon Way. SU185302 Follow the footpath then the permissive path though the Clarendon Estate. SU193280 Turn south and follow Clarendon Lane then Folly Lane. SU183268 Turn onto the bridleway and pass south of Whaddon to SU195261. Turn south following approximately the disused railway line. SU194238 Turn west then join Witherington Road. SU129282 Turn left and head towards Salisbury Racecourse.The waymarks for the western section are missing. The most likely route is that the path crosses the A30 between Wilton and Burcombe, then heads north into Grovely Wood.

The College of Matrons (or Matrons' College) is a residential building and charity within the Salisbury Cathedral Close, Wiltshire, England. It was constructed in 1682 by Seth Ward, bishop of Salisbury, as an almshouse for ten widows of clergy ordained within the diocese of Salisbury. It is on the extension of Salisbury High Street that enters the cathedral close through the North Gate. The building was listed at Grade I in 1952.

Hemingsby House is a Grade I listed, 14th-century house in Salisbury, England, in the north-west corner of Salisbury Cathedral Close, overlooking Choristers' Green. Although constructed as one house, it has two parts in different architectural styles, giving the impression of two separate buildings. In modern times it has been altered to provide two separate houses. It is generally believed to have been built in the 14th century by Alexander de Hemyngsby, the first recorded warden of the Choristers' School in 1322. Apart from the chapel, most of the building was reconstructed in the middle of the 15th century by Nicholas Upton. He was succeeded by Thomas Fideon who completed the reconstruction and whose name appears on some architectural decorations in the house.Edward Powell lived at Hemyngsby in 1525. He served as counsel to Queen Catherine of Aragon at the hearing of Henry VIII's divorce suit against her. Powell met with much disapproval from Henry, and after Catherine's death he was tried for treason in London and hanged, drawn and quartered at Smithfield.In 1547–1550 the house was occupied by the Reverend Simon Symonds who may have been the vicar of Bray in the traditional folksong.The south part of the house, No 56B, was partly rebuilt in 1727 by Canon Joseph Sayer to replace a decaying previous extension. It has a prominent parapet with panels, even stone quoins on the front and an arched door surrounded by rusticated quoins with a semi-circular fanlight above it. There are four sash windows with stone keystones and four windows to the semi-basement. Stone steps lead up to the front door. The roof is hipped front to back and medieval stone has been used to construct the rear façade.No 56A has a pitched, tiled roof with two dormers, a brick, rubble stone and flint dressed façade with four windows. The north wall contains many tiles laid in herring-bone pattern. The porch has a gable decorated with carved stone shields and a round arch over the door. In 1840 the number of residentiary canons at the cathedral was reduced from six to four, and Hemingsby ceased to be a canonry in 1848 on the death of the then resident, the Reverend Matthew Marsh.The house was designated as Grade I listed in 1952.

Wren Hall is a Grade I listed building in Salisbury Cathedral Close, Wiltshire, England. Situated on the west side of Choristers' Green, it was originally part of the attached Braybrook House. A rebuilding was commissioned and funded by Sir Stephen Fox, an alumnus of the Cathedral School, and carried out in 1714 by Thomas Naish, Clerk of Works to the cathedral, to provide a classroom and further dormitories for the cathedral choristers. It has little proven connection with Christopher Wren except that in its style it provides a suitable memorial to the Wiltshire-born architect. After the removal of the Choir School the College of Sarum St Michael acquired it for a short period until it became the diocesan archive repository. In the 1980s it was used as the Salisbury Cathedral Spire Appeal office and later became a cathedral educational resource centre for school visits. The desks of the headmaster and assistant master remain at opposite ends of the room as a reminder of the original use as a single large classroom, or "Big School Room" as it was called, with the two classes sitting back-to-back. The attic contains some dormitories and there are original medieval cellars below the building.The building was designated as Grade I listed in 1952.

The Rifles Berkshire and Wiltshire Museum is a military museum at The Close in Salisbury, England. It is housed in a Grade II* listed building known as The Wardrobe.

The Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) is a Christian music education organisation dedicated to the promotion of music in Christian worship, in particular the repertoire and traditions of Anglican church music, largely through publications, training courses and an award scheme. The organisation was founded in England in 1927 by Sir Sydney Nicholson and today it operates internationally, with 8,500 members in over 40 countries worldwide, and is the largest church music organisation in Britain.The RSCM was originally named the School of English Church Music and was only open to members of the Anglican Communion; today it is an interdenominational organisation, although it is still overseen by the Church of England.Choirs affiliated with the Royal School of Church Music often wear the RSCM medallion, which features a picture of Saint Nicolas, its patron saint.

Arundells is a Grade II* listed house at 59 Cathedral Close, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. Located on the West Walk of the Close, next to the 'Wardrobe' (Rifles Museum), it was the home of Edward Heath, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, from 1985 until his death in 2005. The house and its extensive garden are open to the public five days a week from late March to late October each year.

The Diocese of Salisbury is a Church of England diocese in the south of England, within the ecclesiastical Province of Canterbury. The diocese covers the historic county of Dorset (which excludes the deaneries of Bournemouth and Christchurch, which fall within the Diocese of Winchester as they were historically in Hampshire), and most of Wiltshire (excepting an area in the north and Swindon). The diocese is led by Stephen Lake, Bishop of Salisbury, and by the diocesan synod. The bishop's seat is at Salisbury Cathedral.

Robert Hungerford, 3rd Baron Hungerford (c.1429 – 17 May 1464) was an English nobleman. He supported the Lancastrian cause in the War of the Roses. In the late 1440s and early 1450s he was a member of successive parliaments. He was a prisoner of the French for much of the 1450s until his mother arranged a payment of a 7,966l ransom. In 1461, after defeat on the Towton battlefield on 29 March, he fled with Henry VI to Scotland. In 1461 he was attainted in Edward IV's first parliament, and executed in Newcastle soon after he was captured at the Battle of Hexham.
