Sant'Anna la Misericordia

The Modern Art Gallery of Palermo (Italian: Galleria d'Arte Moderna Palermo) is a civic art gallery of Palermo, displaying works from the 19th until the early 20th century, located on Via Sant'Anna #21, adjacent to the church of Sant'Anna la Misericordia in the ancient quarter of the Kalsa of the city of Palermo, region of Sicily, Italy. The collections were moved to this site, consisting of the former Franciscan convent associated with Sant'Anna and the adjacent Palazzo Bonet.

Palazzo Valguarnera-Gangi is an urban palace, first of the Princes Valguarnera and then of the Princes Gangi, situated in the Piazza Croce dei Vespri, in the ancient quarter of the Kalsa in the city of Palermo, region of Sicily, Italy. The palace still retains its original rich Rococo interior decoration, and is located a block south of the church of Sant'Anna la Misericordia.

Palazzo Isnello (also known as Palazzo Termine d'Isnello or Palazzo Sant'Antimo al Cassaro) is an historic palazzo situated between the ancient via del Cassaro and Piazza Borsa, in the Kalsa quarter of Palermo, Sicily. On the piano nobile of the house, the vault of the ballroom is frescoed with an Apotheosis of Palermo, one of seven monumental representations of the Genius of Palermo, ancient numen of the city. There is also a fresco depicting an allegory of The Four Seasons, painted by Francesco Sozzi.

The Teatro Santa Cecilia or Real Teatro di Santa Cecilia is a neoclassical-style theater building located on Piazza Teatro Santa Cecilia at the intersections with Via Cantavespri and Vicolo Guarnernara, in the ancient quarter of Kalsa of central Palermo, region of Sicily, Italy.

The Church of Saint Francis of Assisi (Italian: Chiesa di San Francesco d'Assisi or simply San Francesco d'Assisi) is a Gothic-style, Roman Catholic church of Palermo. It is located near a major and ancient street of the city, via Cassaro, in the quarter of the Kalsa, within the historic centre of Palermo. The building represents the main Conventual Franciscan church of Sicily, and has the title of minor basilica.

The Oratory of Saint Lawrence (Italian: Oratorio di San Lorenzo) is a Baroque oratory of Palermo. It is located near the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, in the quarter of the Kalsa, within the historic centre of Palermo.The oratory was built in 1569 to replace a former smaller church dedicated to St Lawrence. Construction was funded by a confraternity of mainly Genovese merchants, and linked to Conventual Franciscans. In 1699-1706, Giacomo Serpotta realized a sumptuous stucco decoration, depicting the life of St Francis.The oratory is particularly famous because of the masterpiece altarpiece Nativity with St. Francis and St. Lawrence (1600 or 1609) by Caravaggio. This important painting was stolen, probably by Cosa Nostra, on October 18, 1969. It has never been recovered. In 2015 a hi-tech replica of the altarpiece was placed inside the oratory.

The Battle of Panormus was fought in Sicily in 250 BC during the First Punic War between a Roman army led by Lucius Caecilius Metellus and a Carthaginian force led by Hasdrubal, son of Hanno. The Roman force of two legions defending the city of Panormus defeated the much larger Carthaginian army of 30,000 men and between 60 and 142 war elephants. The war had commenced in 264 BC with Carthage in control of much of Sicily, where most of the fighting took place. In 256–255 BC the Romans attempted to strike at the city of Carthage in North Africa, but suffered a heavy defeat by a Carthaginian army strong in cavalry and elephants. When the focus of the war returned to Sicily, the Romans captured the large and important city of Panormus in 254 BC. Thereafter they avoided battle for fear of the war elephants which the Carthaginians had shipped to Sicily. In late summer 250 BC Hasdrubal led out his army to devastate the crops of the cities of Rome's allies. The Romans withdrew to Panormus and Hasdrubal pressed on to the city walls. Once he arrived in Panormus, Metellus turned to fight, countering the elephants with a hail of javelins from earthworks dug near the walls. Under this missile fire the elephants panicked and fled through the Carthaginian infantry. The Roman heavy infantry then charged the Carthaginian left flank, which broke, along with the rest of the Carthaginians. The elephants were captured and later slaughtered in the Circus Maximus. This was the last significant land battle of the war, which ended nine years later in a Roman victory.

Santa Sofia dei Tavernieri is a former oratory or small church building located in central Palermo, region of Sicily, Italy. It is located just off the main street of the city, the ancient Cassaro now Corso Vittorio Emanuele, in the quarter of the Loggia. About a block and a half east of Via Roma, to the north opens a narrow vicolo Mezzani, off which a few meters in opens the vicolo Santa Sofia, opening to a small piazza with the ruins of the facade of the church. This small church was commissioned by the a Lombard confraternity of Tavernieri (inn-keepers). Initially meeting in the church of the Crocifisso, in the Albergheria, In 1589, they bought land at this site, and erected first a chapel, enlarging it in 1606 with the site of an adjacent house. Over the years, the site became little utilized, including when it became part of a confraternity of the injured victims of war. An allied aerial bomb in 1943 left the site in ruins. Despite claims of restoration, it remains a ruin.

Santa Maria dell'Itria dei Cocchieri, also called Santa Maria dell'Itria alla Kalsa is a small, Rensissance-style, Roman Catholic church of Palermo. It is located on the Piazzetta dei Cocchieri, just off via Alloro, in the quarter of Kalsa (Tribunali) of the historic centre of Palermo. Across via Alloro is the small public pocket park of Giardino dei Giusti.

The Church of St. Mary of the Admiral (Italian: Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio), also called Martorana, is the seat of the Parish of San Nicolò dei Greci (Albanian: Klisha e Shën Kollit së Arbëreshëvet), overlooking the Piazza Bellini, next to the Norman church of San Cataldo, and facing the Baroque church of Santa Caterina in Palermo, Sicily, southern Italy. The church is a Co-cathedral to the Eparchy of Piana degli Albanesi of the Italo-Albanian Catholic Church, a diocese which includes the Italo-Albanian (Arbëreshë) communities in Sicily who officiate the liturgy according to the Byzantine Rite in the Koine Greek language and Albanian language. The Church bears witness to the Eastern religious and artistic culture still present in Italy today, further enhanced by the Albanian exiles who took refuge in southern Italy and Sicily from the 15th century under the pressure of Turkish-Ottoman persecutions in Albania and the Balkans. The latter influence has left considerable traces in the painting of icons, in the religious rite, in the language of the parish, in the traditional customs of some Albanian colonies in the province of Palermo. The community is part of the Catholic Church, but follows the ritual and spiritual traditions that largely share it with the Eastern Orthodox Church. The church is characterized by a multiplicity of styles that meet, since, through the succession of centuries, it was enriched by various tastes in art, architecture and culture. Today, it stands as a church-historical monument, and subject to protection. Since 3 July 2015 it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalù and Monreale.

Sant'Antonio Abate (Saint'Antony Abbot) is a Gothic-style Roman Catholic parish church located on Via Roma #203A in the ancient quarter of Castellammare, in central Palermo, region of Sicily, Italy. The church sits at the west corner of the Vucciria market.

Santa Caterina d'Alessandria or Saint Catherine of Alexandria is a Roman Catholic church with a main facade on Piazza Bellini, and a lateral Western facade facing the elaborate Fontana Pretoria, in the historic quarter of Kalsa in the city of Palermo, region of Sicily, Italy. In front of the main facade, across the piazza Bellini, rise the older churches of San Cataldo and Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio (or the Martorana), while across Piazza Pretoria is the Theatine church of San Giuseppe and the entrance to the Quattro Canti. Refurbished over the centuries, the church retains elements and decorations from the Renaissance, Baroque, and late-Baroque (Rococo) eras. This church is distinct from the Oratorio di Santa Caterina found in the Olivella neighborhood.
