Harry Merrill House

The Attack on Hutchinson occurred on September 4, 1862 during the Dakota War of 1862 as a part of Chief Little Crow's incursion into the Big Woods area of Minnesota. On September 3, Little Crow encountered Captain Strout's Company B, 10th Minnesota Infantry Regiment near Acton and chased it to the stockade of the town of Hutchinson. On September 4 Little Crow attacked with 200 warriors and destroyed most of the buildings outside of the stockade. Small firefights broke out between the Hutchinson Home Guard and Sioux warriors, but the Dakota failed to breach the town's defenses. Little Crow's men subsequently retreated, bringing as much loot as they could carry.

The Merton S. Goodnow House at 446 S. Main St. in Hutchinson, Minnesota was built in 1913. It was designed by Purcell, Feick & Elmslie. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. It was deemed architecturally significant as "a fine example of Prairie School architecture designed by the noted firm of Purcell and Elmslie." The firm focused on designs for relatively inexpensive houses on small lots, such as this. According to the NRHP nomination:The houses were distinguished by simple massing, compact plans and, if possible, the use of inexpensive materials. Inspiration for these homes came from Frank Lloyd Wright's "Fireproof House for $5,000", published by the Ladies' Home Journal in 1907. The Goodnow House is characteristic of Purcell and Elmslie's residential designs with two stories, a gabled roof, tinted stucco and grouped windows. The massing is unified by string courses, extended beams and boldly overhanging roofs which co-exist with the interplay of horizontals and verticals. Typical of Purcell and Elmslie was the use of both brick and stucco on the exterior. The living room and dining room are opened as a single space which pivots around the fireplace. This was a highly sophisticated spatial arrangement maximizing the sense of space in a restricted area. This arrangement was continually refined by Purcell and Elmslie in their residential work.

Maplewood Academy is a private Christian boarding high school located in Hutchinson, Minnesota. It is owned and operated by the Minnesota Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. It is a part of the Seventh-day Adventist education system, the world's second largest Christian school system.

Hutchinson Senior High School was founded in the fall of 1877 in Hutchinson, Minnesota, United States. The school has over 17,000 graduates since its inception. [17,095 through 2023] The first graduating class included H. H. Bonniwell. Today, HHS graduates anywhere from 200-240 graduates per year. This rate has held fairly steady for the past 50 years. The first class over 100 was in 1942 (110) and the first class of 200 students occurred 23 years later in 1965. The last graduating class under 200 was in 1992. Over that time, Hutchinson HS has had a remarkably stable population of between 800-1100 students. Currently, the enrollment of Hutchinson HS is above 900 and expects to be there through the near future.

Hutchinson Municipal Airport (ICAO: KHCD, FAA LID: HCD), also known as Butler Field, is a public airport located two miles (3 km) south of the central business district of Hutchinson, a city in McLeod County, Minnesota, United States. It is owned by the City of Hutchinson. The airport is home to the Civil Air Patrol. The FBO is operated by ASI JET. Although most U.S. airports use the same three-letter location identifier for the FAA and IATA, Hutchinson Municipal Airport is assigned HCD by the FAA but has no designation from the IATA.

Lynn Township is a township in McLeod County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 519 at the 2020 census.

Heatwole is an unincorporated community in Lynn Township, McLeod County, Minnesota, United States, southwest of Hutchinson. The community is located along McLeod County Road 18 (150th Street) near County 7. Walden Avenue is also in the immediate area. Heatwole is the home of the annual Heatwole Threshing Show every second weekend in August. The community was named for Joel Prescott Heatwole, a newspaper editor and politician, who served as mayor of Northfield, Minnesota from 1894 to 1895. Heatwole served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1895 to 1903.

Lake Hook, sometimes referred to as Hook Lake, is a 330 square acre (1.3 sq km) lake in McLeod County, in the U.S. state of Minnesota, that is a popular fishing destination. The lake is approximately 18 feet (5.5 m) at its deepest point with an average depth of 8 feet (2.4 m) and a shoreline spanning 4 miles (7.1 km). Lake Hook was named for Captain Isaac Newton Hook, a pioneer who settled there in the 1850s, and is famous for his highly unusual above-ground tomb located in the small town of Stockport, Ohio. Hook designed and created this tomb himself, completing it shortly before his death in 1906. A popular legend associated with this tomb is that Hook's wife claimed that she would be the first to dance on his grave when Hook died. This is supposedly the reason that he built it with a rounded top and a sharp spire, an attempt to prevent her from doing so.
